So is he the replacement for Heitz ,with slightly modified duties, and Stephens ,likewise, the replacement for Pelzer? (That’s all I got.)
Couple posts thought he was good on academy and youth development, not so much on acquisitions. Not seeing much about him.
More names, more g, same or similar titles. It doesn’t matter unless the Fire are winning games and making the playoffs. Check that, the wallowers have waited too long for a decent team, we want a top 3 in the conference in 2025. I will show myself to the delusional thread.
Judge him by his results-good idea! Sounds like he was handcuffed by minuscule budget at latest position.
From the official announcement of Gregg Broughton's appointment as Sporting Director: Gregg Broughton originally began his career with Wycombe Wanderers in 1999. Since then, he has held technical staff positions with AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Luton Town, Norwich City, and FK Bodø/Glimt in Norway. https://www.chicagofirefc.com/news/chicago-fire-fc-names-gregg-broughton-sporting-director Not a great track record. Rushden & Diamonds? Northern Premier League (7th tier)-Highest home attendance EVER- 1,165 (they average about 400). By the way, it appears that he was with AFC Rushden & Diamonds and not the "original" Rushden & Diamonds, which folded in 2011. The original team was frequently in the lower tiers of the league. They had a couple of upsets in the various cup competitions back when I paid attention to such things. Luton Town-Well, if he was there anytime between 2001 and 2022, they were in the second through fifth tier of English football, spending the bulk of those years in the third and fourth tier. Norwich City? Odds are when was there, there were in the Championship (second tier). FK Bodø/Glimt? They have been one of the better teams in Norway the last few, although they bounced up and down between 2008 and 2018. And, since I am now an expert on all things Norwegian (having spent almost a week there last year!), I can say that is not exactly the top echelon of world football. He also apparently left Blackburn Rovers (who ended in 19th place in the Championship last season) at the end of last season "by mutual consent." Here is the ENTIRETY of Blackburn's official announcement when he left: 18 May 2024 Club Club statement: Gregg Broughton By Blackburn Rovers FC Gregg Broughton, Director of Football, who joined us in June 2022, has now left the club by mutual agreement. We wish him well in the future. https://www.rovers.co.uk/news/2024/may/18/club-statement--gregg-broughton/ Yep, that is it! Overall, I am NOT impressed.
In every position he has held. It appears he has never been part of a top division team in a top league. Sounds perfect for the Fire, then!
That’s the team. Not sure who is to blame. One post said the only person who knew how to fax the papers was gone so it took them too long to get it done.
Not really a good description. Per club announcements, duties are as follows: Stephens-“leads the Club’s efforts in identifying, recruiting and acquiring world-class talent.” Broughton-“oversee talent development and assist in recruitment, negotiation and retention of players and staff.” Based upon these descriptions and other information, it looks like Stephens will focus on player acquisition and Broughton will focus on player development. Both will report to Berhalter, so presumably they have equal stature. Fire followers and a fewer others in MLS know who Stephens is, but he is not exactly famous. I suspect Broughton is likewise known by a limited number of people overseas but not widely followed.. Being relatively unknown does not mean they will perform poorly in their new jobs in a new team environment. We need to give Berhalter some respect (his choices!) and allow them a fair chance to show us they can do the job.
