So here I am, post world cup dreams in the dumpster, USA lost to Ghana. I am an MLS freak of a fan and I see there is a game on Sunday, it is Phillie vs Seattle in Phillie's new stadium! Ok, I am not going to miss this, and I did not. While watching, I was entertained, I was happy about the crowd, the stadium looks nice and the view of the bridge... WOW! However, I couldn't shake this surreal feeling I had over me, like I was just not into it. I think I'm still suffering from World Cup "your team got knocked-the-f@ck-out-osis" and was a bit sad while watching MLS. I know I will be happy soon enough when things start to get good down towards the playoff stretch, but it was just odd. Maybe MLS just needs to stay clear of the World cup all together? I dunno, know the scheduling conflicts etc. Still, anyone else feel this way?
A little. Just because the World Cup is so huge. The production, the crowds, the way everyone crowds into bars and restaurants to watch the US play. It's epic. If MLS games had the epicness of the World Cup, I don't think we'd miss a beat. I think the way the US qualified for the Knockout Stage to just be put away by Ghana probably has a lot to do with it too. We feel a little cheated. But MLS will pick back up and in a couple of weeks after the World Cup, and things will resume as normal. Hopefully with MLS bringing in a grip of new fans in the process.
I have a similar feeling. I've loved MLS since I started following it after the 2006 World Cup. Then, the next 4 years I was deeply DEEPLY emotionally involved with the US's success in this World Cup. I think it is more of a "back into other soccer," not just MLS itself.
Back in the swing already. Getting stuff together for a US Open Cup trip to Harrisburg, PA. Also, having our manager say that two DPs will be brought in, one definitely during this transfer window ( ), has lifted my spirits somewhat. That and England/Mexico getting knocked out...
it was even worse considering how trully hungover i was sunday as well. suffering a real hangover while trying to get over the US being knocked out and then trying to console myself by watching the MLS match after the two really good world cup matches in the morning. wasnt the best idea i have ever had, my hangover got much worse through the first half of the MLS game, thats for sure. but, eventually ill get over it and i'll be happy with the intensity of the playoff push. probably by mid august ill be fully back into MLS, but man has the world cup been fun. soooo much emotion and intensity, especially from the final round of group games on. i love this, every 4 years is a roller coaster.
It's hard because of how we all feel given the way the US got to the 2nd round and then how it ended so abruptly 2 days later. That being said, MLS opening a new stadium would be can't miss tv for most MLS fans, but this year there is so much soccer on TV, MLS certainly ranks behind any WC match. MLS should do what they can to just avoid the WC altogether. I can't get into MLS until the WC is over.
Same here, I could care less how my team does, at least for now...Its like driving a Mercedes than driving a Kia.
Well, you could say that about any league really. It's not just the MLS, but soccer as a whole. If EPL was starting back up right now, I'm sure that wouldn't seem as important either. Like I said, the World Cup is huge and it'll take a little time to come back. Especially after how the US got eliminated.
Almost everybody feels that way. It is the nature of the beast. Don't worry, your MLS legs will be back soon enough.
The goal by Noonan was lucky....but it was a good run on the left side. the crowd was awesome on the PK by Moreno. Philly had so many chances...Seattle was way outmached...I was surprised the ball got to Fred for a wide open goal...defense was horrible on the 3rd goal. after that the crowd was awesome...teh last 40 min were fast paced and the crowd ws great. awesome display for MLS...
I have to admit I had the same feeling as well, if not more so. After this world cup, particularly with the lousy officiating, going back and watching MLS just didn't seem all that appealing. I felt soccered out on Sunday so much so I choose to watch baseball instead. And by that I mean I was just feeling angry every time I thought about the sport and how backward the officiating was at the supposedly top level, that it made me wonder if they'll ever redeem themselves and the sport. Because right now soccer to me is seeming very corrupt, particularly after FIFA's responses to the blatantly bad officiating (ie: sweeping it under the rug). I hope it will pass because watching MLS has always been a bright spot for me, but something has to be done about FIFA...
Well, unless you're into fantastic goalkeeping that game did really suck. Nothing like Pete Vagenas and Patrick Ianni starting central midfield to really make someone want to jab their eyes out with hot pokers. So I'm sure the hangover will pass... but you also probably need to watch 2 better teams playing each other.
I'm still very much into the WC even after the U.S. was sent home, because my two other favorite teams are still in it (Germany and Argentina, and on a collision course), but regardless if my teams are in it or not, I wouldn't miss the other games either. That said, I still find time for MLS in the midst of the WC. Sunday I watched 3 games, the two WC games and the Union-Sounders game. No schedule conflict, as they weren't played concurrently. I don't know why a person can't follow the WC and MLS at the same time. One plays in the mornings and afternoons, the other in the evenings. Where is the conflict?
This was definitely the most emotionally draining World Cup I've ever experienced. The England game was a better result than I expected. The Slovenia game was just...wow the come back, the overturned goal, the bittersweet aftertaste. The Algeria match; heart stopping. Then top it all off with another loss to Ghana, this time in ET. It was going to take more than a few hours (even days) before I would really be able to get up for a Crew match, but I watched what I could of this weekend's anyway. I think by the time the July 3rd match against Chicago rolls around, I'll be back into the swing of MLS. But think about the possible feelings about MLS we would have had if the US had won that match. I think most of us would have been amped.
Its the emotional investment. These were the 4 most tense US matches I have ever watched, and they were all packed into 3 weeks. It was worse than Egypt, Spain, and Brazil last summer. Its just emotionally and mentally draining. When you're drained like that, its hard to get back up. It takes time. The quality difference also makes it tough for some people. Even watching EPL games would lack the passion of the World Cup so it'd be hard to get back into the best league in the world right away.
Its really exhausting to watch all the world cup games. And its not whether we can watch our MLS games but at this point of the season, i dont think anybody wants to. For me, I am going to finish watching the world cup, then i will take a break and once i want to become involved in MLS I will. Being Fair, It is hard to be a US and MLS fan, probably the hardest teams to support. There are so many things we have to deal with it as we develop this soccer growing country.
Being fair, at least we don't have to deal with developing soccer while living in a national filled with abject poverty and constant crime.
From a sports perspective he's right though. It is hard to be a US/MLS fan. In both respects, everyone in the world hates you and even a vast number of people in our own country disparage it and openly want us to fail. Where else would the support of a sport or even national team face that? Soccer's struggle for acceptance in the US has always confused me. Sure soccer's not for everyone. Just like lacrosse or swimming or cricket isn't for everyone. But if you don't like thise things, then don't watch them! I don't understand so many Americans' need to not only not like soccer, but to openly be dismissive and negative towards, what amounts to a sporting activity. Why does soccer garner this sort of negative attention and not lacrosse, cricket, rugby or any other number of non-American, non-popular us sports?
To me, watching MLS again after all these World Cup matches is a little like being served a cheeseburger after weeks of eating prime rib. Enjoyable, but not quite as satisfying. Mind you, as I watched Columbus polish off DC, I started to remember just how much I enjoy a good cheeseburger. ------RM
I love MLS and I love my Galaxy, but watching last Saturday WAS kind of a "hangover" for me. There just isn't anything I love more in sports or any form of entertainment, than the World Cup. Anything compared to that is going to be lesser in my eyes. But once a week or two go by, I'll be back into the swing.
