I've been going through the records and you're right. When HSV won the European Cup in 1983 it sent major shockwaves because they were massive underdogs and everyone assumed it would be Juventus winning their maiden European Cup. The 1986 World Cup final is the only time Argentina beat Germany in a World Cup match. Other than that the Argies have a negative record against Germany in direct World Cup match-ups, so yeah they have reason to get triggered when it comes to facing Germany.
I hope that happens tbh, but I worry the DFB might promote from within and we end up with Di Salvo with Meister as assistant or something lol. Seriously though, I'm not sure Nagelsmann will still be in charge post WC whatever happens. I get the impression he's happier coaching every week in the club environment where he can work more often on his clever tactical ideas. Also interesting to note that our results/performances have dropped off since the best German striker and now coach Sandro Wagner left the NT to join Augsburg....
Gegenpressing had an interesting take FWIW/YMMV In their view the issue is not talent or tactics but chemistry. Short version is Kimmich is not a good leader of the side, according to Gegenpressing 'insider' view based on being around the players and watching trainings - only his 'mates' respect him. Short version they think JN was right to get really mad and Goretzka and co should be kicked out of the team because of the overall dressing room vibes. In their opinion, Kimmich is a really good and valuable 8 out of 10 player who isn't elite at anything so you can't build a team around him. Goretzka is similarly difficult because no one can really figure out how he fits in the team - but he is also dominant given his age now. In their view the team was much better with Gnabry and Goretzka out and Kimmich somewhat sidelined to right back. I think it's probably correct. The trouble is this time JN doesn't have a Toni Kroos he can turn to.
I think something JN got right for the euros was he took enough of a sledge hammer to the team in terms of the old guard, but then built the team around Gundalf and Kroos who are elite players. Espcially he sidelined Kimmich, booted Goretzka and really created a platform for Wirtz and Musiala. But it had tactical tradeoffs because his midfield was old and slow. But now we can see how much JN got right. Now I think he needs to go the whole hog and turn to the younger guys as in 2010 of course the 2010 team did have Schweinsteiger, neuer, podolski & lahm who were 25ish - peak age
I'd take that same gamble and go full clean slate for the World Cup. What I really want is a team primed to win the Euros, and I seriously doubt it will happen with the current holdovers.
yes i agree. the only question is how deep to cut. like do you keep kimmich as right back? he played well there during the euros.
Agree. But I do think Nagelsmann will move on after the world cup, hence, more of the Experienced players in his squads.
Kimmich is currently the best Germany has in terms of RB, so the first thing to do is to drill it into his skull that RB is his best position because he's just awful in midfield.
at the headline. DFB: Nagelsmann very jealous – German U21 dominates in European Championship qualifiers! Nagelsmann is jealous German U21 dominates in European Championship qualifiers! 5-0 opening win against Latvia After the European Championship comes the European Championship! The final defeat at the U21 European Championship in Slovakia against England (2-3 after extra time/in the same Bratislava stadium where the German senior team, under coach Julian Nagelsmann, suffered an embarrassing 2-0 defeat in World Cup qualifying last week) was just under two months ago. Coach Toni Di Salvo's (46) team is already looking to qualify for the next tournament in Serbia and Albania in two years. For the first match in qualifying Group F on Tuesday evening against Latvia (5-0) in Rostock in front of 9,019 fans, only five of the last tournament's runners-up are left in the squad: Nicolò Tresoldi (21/Bruges), Nelson Weiper (20/Mainz), Brajan Gruda (21/Brighton & Hove Albion), Lukas Ullrich (21/Mönchengladbach), and Elias Baum (19/Frankfurt), all of whom are in the starting eleven. Notably, with the exception of Noel Aseko (19/Hanover) and Joshua Quarshie (21/Southampton), all of the starting eleven play in one of Europe's top leagues, and seven are under contract with Bundesliga clubs. That alone is a testament to the incredible quality of this new team – in the past, many more players from second-division teams were involved... Tresoldi with a hat trick Our U21s get off to a flying start! The first big chance after just 78 seconds: Tresoldi suddenly finds himself completely unmarked in front of the opposing goal, but is denied by Latvian goalkeeper Parfjonovs (2'). After that, Germany carelessly misses several great opportunities before Weiper opens the scoring: Aseko sets up the Mainz player, who scores with a shot on the turn to make it 1-0 (19'). ▶︎ 44th minute: Tresoldi increases the lead to 2-0 after a pass from Weiper. That's also the halftime score – but our U21 team should have been leading at least 5-0 at halftime, but they managed to score again after the break... Tresoldi is back, making it 3-0 (50th minute) and then adding his third goal in the 57th minute to make it 4-0. Hoffenheim's Muhammed Damar (21/Hoffenheim) celebrates his U21 goal-scoring debut with the 5-0 win. The reward for the dominant victory: first place after the first matchday! Level on points and goals with Greece (5-0 against Malta). Nagelsmann and the senior team (currently only third in their World Cup qualifying group) will be quite jealous... European Championship qualification is an absolute must Georgia, Greece, Northern Ireland, and Malta are Germany's other opponents – all outsiders. Qualifying for the 2027 European Championship is an absolute must! All group winners and the best runner-up are definitely in the tournament, while the other eight runners-up still have a chance in the playoffs. The European Championship in Serbia and Albania is also so interesting and important because the teams can only qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles through this event. With the win against Latvia, Germany has taken the first step... https://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/...ominiert-in-em-quali-68c064cf784ebe32609e193d
hahaha, a player who most would think has 0 business in SNT ended up the hero. 🇩🇪 Nadiem Amiri has been voted Man of the Match against Northern Ireland by Germany fans pic.twitter.com/zsG3StTeu4— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) September 9, 2025
on topic of Woltemade, I will just say the following CF is a tricky position for young players. when has Germany had success with a young CF??? -who recalls Gomez? When he brokethrough SNT, way too much missing sitters, even missed once in Euro 2008 an open net vs Austria, LMAO. Sooooo much blundering. But Gomez come 30s and he was finally more effective and good for Germany too. Gomez turned 23 y/o during his 1st tourney aka Euro 2008. -Klose brokethrough SNT at 24 y/o and didn't become more complete CF until the time of WC10 too, when he was 32 y/o......that was PEAK Klose. -Werner brokethrough at 21 y/o at CC17, won Golden Boot and got praised but after that Low was unable to mix the CC17+EC16 squads together and we crashed and burned and continued to crash after. People blamed everything on Werner.......like how was it his fault??? And he hasn't played any tourney since Euro 2020 too. Anyone who blames him is disingenuous, WC18-EC20 was FULL of whole team was a mess and crap. But he was scapegoated. And we saw how no Werner at WC22 and what happened there??? LMAO. Sucks for him to breakthrough at a time of NT being rubbish. I actually think Werner breakingthrough a more functioning Germany could have been far far more dangerous too. Just imagine him off the bench with his destructive speed vs tired legs working along an effective Germany. Instead, he was basically the only player who can counter, LOL. -Podolski, brokethrough at 19 y/o and his 1st tourney EC04, was a disaster for Germany too. But TOO much expectations was put on his shoulders too. -Kuranyi brokethrough at 21 y/o and was the XI CF for Euro 2004. -Basically all the other CFs brokethrough like 24 y/o+, a Neuville, Jancker etc all fit this too. And even most of the 1 cap wonders also brokethrough older. reality for Germany the OLDER they are the BETTER and MORE EFFECTIVE they are for the NT. what sucks is when one notices that EVERYONE listed brokethrough at times where Germany was either in SHIT MODE or beginning of changing of guard. Like none actually brokethrough during perfectly functioning times, LMAO. something that should also be mentioned and I find most in German footy always pretend otherwise. I think Klose has this myth about him about his durability and DFB always talks about him as one of greatest now in "fondness". But who actually recalls the NUMEROUS times that DFB wanted to dump Klose out of XI, LMAO. I 100% remember, reality, DFB was NEVER 100% ecstatic about Klose tbh.........why? because he was NEVER seen as a world class CF. Outside of Germany, the non-Germans were never impressed of him outside of WCs with Germany. go back and you'll see that Germany benched Klose with Kuranyi for EC04. This is something often forgotten, Kuranyi was XI for 3/3 EC04 and Klose was on bench for 3/3. Germany tried very very very hard from what I recall in wanting Gomez to bench Klose. I feel I recall also a desire for Podolski and others to get rid of Klose in XI........but the irony is that it never worked after EC04, simply because Gomez was toooooooooo young and erratic and Kuranyi blacklisted himself with Low in 2008. Had things went differently with younger Gomez and Kuranyi we very well likely never see Klose being Germany's ALL time scorer and WC All Time Scorer. But with way things went as well as Low blacklisting like entire CF Pool....aka as usual Germany and selfcreated issues,LMAO, this allowed Klose to endure as 1st choice until he retired. point is, one should have patience with Woltemade and to not expect miracles. At least he lasted longer in SNT than any 1-2 caps wonder and getting loads of XIs. But when Kleindienst and co are fit again, those guys should be the main focus. Lets not OVERBURDEN Woltemade during Germany's current SHIT PERIOD.
on that note, reality is the following. we have a wave of next gen CFs emerging at a high level this season and more in future. To be clear, wave of next gen CFs=doesn't mean any will be World Class-Elite, just means that loads of potential and breakingthrough 1BL and relevant pro footy faster then ever and its not 1-2 players that's it, #s much much bigger than that. We haven't seen this many young CFs breakthrough in a LONG time. The topic of Elite-World Class is something that one confirms with time aka they have to show themselves at high level and for numerous seasons. No point of annoiting anyone anything. but we are stuck in a loop of CFs being forced to breakthrough SNT either in SHIT MODE or changing of guard, LMAO. Beier+Woltemade currently breakingthrough SHIT MODE SNT. Feels like the REST will end up breakingthrough Germany in CHANGING OF GUARD PHASE..... that makes things difficult tbh and more reason why the behind the CF issues need to be fixed 1st, a more functional team needs to be had for the integration to work better. well one good thing about next gen CFs breakingthrough during changing of guard phase is that LOADS of them are duals, cough like almost all cough, LMAO. Makes it easier to PERM CAP them and for them to breakthrough SNT when currently all the options are in their 30s outside of Havertz. Germany U21 coach Di Salvo is already salivating at how Germany U21 has LOADS of options for CFs and all are promising players and he's spoiled for options, LOL.
Based on both of your posts, I think the only CF who was successful for the NT at a young age was Klinsmann.
Fun fact , the youngest CF to have scored for Germany/West Germany in the post-war era is a guy called Klaus Stürmer (19 & 68 days). The perfect name for a striker lol. I do agree that it is a tough position to establish yourself in these days, especially given the vast majority deploy a lone CF system. We are gonna need patience, when you look at how many CF strong options we have at U21/U20 level things look very bright imo.
I couldn't agree with you more. He always has struck me as a coach who wants to tinker and try out ideas, which can work for a Club, but certainly has no place with the NT.
I forgot we had 25 y/o Havertz at EC24 and he was legit worst German CF in a tourney ever, LOL. Take away his PKs he scored 0 open play goals and we looked like we were playing with 10 men. Had we had a better CF in XI we could have went further, nevermind that ref cheated for Spain, LOL. yes Havertz is worst ever because others in like Euro 2000, Euro 2004, WC18, WC22 the whole team was a MESS. Euro 2020 we barely made it of GS, LOL. EC24 was a more functional team than those tourneys.
Not in your life but in the 70s (mostly early 70s) it was highly thought of. Anyone remember the weekly PBS program soccer made in Germany?
