I was under the impression that Italy would have been the first choice anyway, as France's position as host gives Italy the European slot. Unless, of course, FIFA decided to ask the previous champion rather than the runner-up as a France sub. I bet FIFA will ask Italy now. If they decline, I bet Portugal is asked, and accepts.
I'd go with Portugal. They don't have to qualify for Euro 2004 and they need to vet new players and get revenge for losing to the USA. Sachin
