iI just expect this Germany formation against Costa Rica (and for most of the WC):

    Lehmann

    Friederick-Mertesacker-Metzelder-Lahm

    Frings ---Kehl (DM)--Ballack (AM)---Scheny

    Klose-Poldi

Altought considering Costa Rica will be very defensive, I would leave out a natural DM,like Kehl and leave a more natural offensive midfield like this:

    Schneider-Frings-Ballack,Schweny

Although a final scoreline of 0-0 or 1-0 would be typical for an opening match, the recent past (in combination with our offensive strength and defensive sensitivity) seems to indicate an interesting match with a couple of goales.
    My prediction: 3-2 for Germany.

I think it will be very similar to the match against Colombia. Some few counterattacks by Costa Rica, that Germany defense must control.
Germany will control ball possesion and display mostly offensively.

If Germany is able to score first (as they should) I excpect a 2-1,2-0 or even a 3-0, in favor of Germany.

Hmm, I think the young guys will be quite nervous so I'll predict 2:0.

Don't forget the immense pressure on the players in this game. These guys will probably always have in the back of their mind that 1 billion people or whatever are watching what they are doing. Imagine that sort of pressure! Even the easiest tasks can become very difficult if you know you are being watched by 1 billion people. Corner kicks, free kicks, easy passes, shots, you name it.

Opening games have always suffered from this, and I think it won't be different this time.

Yeap, nervousness is one big enemy that the young players have to overcome!

Maybe, but i expect once the game starts and the adrenaline pumps that the nerves will subside...you don't have time to think about stuff like that when you're playing.

I predict a triumphant, enthusiamic victory by Germany that will carry them through the tournament, at least into the second round.

5:0. An early goal by Klose, then Podolski, Schweinsteiger, Ballack and either Asamoah or Neuville, depending on who comes in when Klose has run out of fuel in minute 70.

    a 4-0 win to Germany.

A poor first half which see's Germany take the slender 1-0 lead just before half time from a Michael Ballack header.
Substitutions are made at HT and Schneider is replaced by Borowski and we have Klose, Podolski and Ballack scoring in the second half.

Germany probably won't look impressive and still win 4-0...............

    Germany 4-0

    Klose (2) Podolski (1) Ballack (1)

Germany will look solid and come through in the opening match and have a good show for the supporters. The fans will gather behind the team and push them on the victory.

Germany will overrun the Costa Ricans and win 6:2!

Germany will score twice early in the game and force CR to give up their ultra defensive tactics. Halftime score 2:1. CR will pay tribute to a fast paced game by Schweinerei , Ball********s and friends and after Roadrunner Odonkor comes on score 4 more in the second half. Klose(2) Schweini (2) Poldi (1) Ballack (1)

Lionhead: “I don’t get mad. I get even.”

Iono why but I think by the end of the tournament, we will all love Odonkor.

I see these posts about Costa Rica being a defensive team. Granted I did not see their recently friendlies, but did any of you watch them in 02. They played balls out attack against China, Turkey, and Brazil, a game in which a 0-0 draw would have seen them though. They are not a good defensive team. Now they may play it conservative, but that is not their nature. Their best chance of winning is in a scoring contest.

Of course I see Germany winning by 2-3 goals, but I think it will be a wide open game. We could be in for a real treat like the Costa Rica-Brazil or US-Germany games in 02. With no pressure on them, I think Costa Rica will go for it.

Naa! If they'd try to play it open they'd play into our cards. That's what Grinser's & friends are waiting for. Deadly counter attacks! Klose - bang, Poldi - bang

Well of course we're going to outscore them...but they will let in a few IMO. He's just referring to the fact that a lot of ppl have 2:0, 3:0 or 4:0 in their scores.
