So, five members of the German team have posed for the German edition of Playboy.

Here's a link with a VERY Not Safe For Work video

Here's the NY Post Story With various bits of borderline homophobic statements from the players

Roughly the same article from Fox Sports

Given that BS doesn't allow porn, but these are soccer players, Here are the rules for talking about this:

    • Showing/Embedding NSFW images -- and this includes wet, see-through t-shirts -- gets the poster a yellow card.
    • Links must go to actual news sites and NOT porn sites.
    • If you have a link/photo/video that you'd like to share that does not meet the above rules, feel free to tell people to PM you for information.

Feel free to discuss any and all aspects of them posing, any negative effects, etc. here.

They have a right to do it. I don't think it was the brightest or the most progressive idea, but if they want to get someone off that's their choice. I would like to see how this will affect the popularity of the German U-20 team, pertaining to if this does actually gain them more fans who will watch and attend their matches and invest money into merchandise, when they have their tops on and their nipples aren't showing.

Yes or perhaps "Show us your ****!" Maybe one can bring water guns that they can shoot at the players when they wear their white kits.

They have a right to do it, of course. In fact, I was thrilled with the idea. But time and time again, women players feel the need to say shit like this:

And that, to me, is completely unnecessary. It's bad enough when photo shoots trot out the same 5-6 attractive players and doll them up. We get it. Some players are never going to be magazine-cover worthy. But to take a swipe at the 'butch' players, seems petty and out of line.

And it sucks, because I kinda liked Simic.

I love how they say that yet they are using homoerrotic imagery and posing in homoerrotic poses to sell these photos. They don't come off that pretty to me even if I just look at them at face value and quite honestly I've seen better racks, faces, and bodies on Tumblr.

For me the challenge for women is not taking their clothes off but doing so while still maintaining self respect and walking away with a pictorial, paycheck, new fairweather fans, and most importantly their dignity.

It came off more cheap and sleezy, skimpy panties, thin cami jersey shirts, (not because Playboy was involved, but the poses and photo direction) than sexy. I've really seen better in the nude photography/art relm.

There's a reason why one would f*** the **** out of their mistress but never wife them. Pick up the hoochie, get the c******, call the cab tell her to scootchie. There's no doubt that it may make one want to bang them or look at them more, but does it actually get one interested in German women's soccer? Are you going to say up in the wee hours of the morning to watch them play soccer, or would you only do so if they were oiled up wearing see through shirts and skimpy panties while squirting eachother with water hoses and giving eachother foot massages with their mouths open?

Not sexy. The poses. The direction. The shoes. Kinda lifeless to me.

IMO, this photo shoot is Really Funny in the OMG unintended irony kinda way.. So, yeah, we are not butch; just really gay. More femme, actually... Did those girls not get that?

Granted that it is Playboy, where not only beauty is skin deep, but also character (it is made to appear-- as we wouldn't want personality to interfere with the fantasy), but jeez, the photographer and the session scripter could have done So Much Better.

Brandi Chastain, never my favorite player or sports personality, once said something sorta like: I've worked incredibly hard for this body, why in the world would I be embarassed to show it off? As a guy, I can only say, gee, I wish all my favorite female players felt that way... ;). It would certainly provide a whole new context for appreciating Sunday WPS... But context is everything: The German team has got some mighty pretty gals, but for me, the hottest part of the video was when they had the (soccer :D) ball on their feet!

This would have been a much better idea if they had chilled the homophobic not-so-sub-text; put the camera on motor drive and shot the gals freestyling; and taken at least a few shots where one got some glimmer of the player's personality.

Not a very successful exercise, but I applaud the idea that the Aussies are not the only ones to give new dimension to the idea of the beautiful game!

I think since Germany has a much more established football culture, and is less awkward with nudity, that this isn't a big deal. In America, where (as a whole) people are much more easily offended and are always looking for something to complain about, the USWNT would catch a lot heat for doing something like this and damage their credibility with the mainstream media and other people whose opinions don't matter. Many "acronym groups" would be quick to pass judgement on others. I don't think what these German women did was either good or bad, no more so than what they ate for breakfast. They probably got paid a descent amount for doing something they weren't too concerned about in the first place. Try not to look for some deep, hidden meaning behind it all. It's just not a big deal. Imagine what, lets say, the Iranian National Womens Team thinks about the non-hijab-wearing members of the USWNT in this thread?

You're one of the reasons we had to get special rules drawn up for this.

yeah I mean, just look at the whole Anthony Weiner business. Total freakout by the American Morality Police. I knew our country was f*ed up, but the media took this to a whole new level.

Don't really get where you were going with this...complex subject.

Yikes! Careful what you wish for! This was brought to my attention. IMO, hotter than the Playboy thing, but I don't think these gals are German...

Wanna know the truth? I only thought about soccer or the soccer ball when they showed the back shots (Had she had an ass I wouldn't have noticed the all then) or panned down to her legs or when it grazed across her ****.

It doesn't make me want to watch soccer, it just gets me thinking about **** which I can find outside the relm of soccer.

mostly don't care. but agree with bonnie that taking shots at the "non-girly" players was lame.
