    Germany
I thought to start this one as special thread for everything Germany, but not soccer related. I think here is where most Germans or Germany-interested take a look at and rather not in the other special forums, in which once in a while something Germany related is discussed (at least I just check frequently over there as 99% of the topics are not interesting for me). Post whatever you like.

Three topics are my special concern right now:
    a) music: anyone having some hint on current (not general) good music? Mine would be “Guten Tag” by “Wir sind Helden”. I’m everything but aware that this is a good band in general, but somehow I love this song.
    b) Cinema 1: a couple of weeks ago “Goodbye Lenin” started. Usually I’m very critical with German movies. I loved the basic idea of a family waking up some years after the reunification in the former East Germany and practising their usual communism in the capitalistic world. The excerpts looked great and I was about to go to this movie when I recognised that it wasn’t on in CineStar Gütersloh. Anyone seen this movie? Is it good or just the excerpt funny?
Cinema 2: “Jackass – The Movie” is also in the cinemas since some weeks. Usually I stop by when I coincidentally switch through the channels and Jackass is on. I think it’s fun for a few minutes, but it’s quite boring for a longer time. Yesterday Andrack had his pseudo-Jackass copy in HSS and was very amused. I wondered about the good criticisms for this movie (although this usually is the indicator that the movie is extremely bad). Anybody been to the movie? Is it worth watching? Is it just an extended MTV show or is there also some plot in it?

You wouldn't like my recommendations ;)

Andrack's Jackass trip was the funniest thing in the show for weeks (i wanted to bump the Stefan Raab thread because of that). "Du machst mir Angst !" :D
I haven't seen that Jackass-movie (and i don't want to) but i have heared that it's just an extended tv episode).
But it's still fun to watch all that "Ban Jackass" specials on German TV.

Agreed, HSS is currently a bit weaker than usual in the last weeks. Time and again there's a good show in between, but in general it's a bit lame with too many games with the live attendance, peace crap and guest hacking at the moment. Not enough speed in it and the "Liebling des Monats" election should go back to the Rütten-films plus determining himself. Raab is partially funny, but often I simply switch away when the level is sinking too low.

Andrack could have jumped btw. :) He could have held himself at the parapet, then the distance would have been okay.

I thought that it was a pretty good film, one of the better german films I've seen (though with my opinions of german film that isn't saying much). It had a couple funny parts and I probably missed a joke or two, but I really wouldn't call it a comedy as much as a coming of age in difficult times type film. Overall I thought it was good, but just pales in comparison to my favorite german movie of all time: Knocking on Heavens' Door.

Yep, German movie industry is known for having more awards than good movies and actors. I don't like KOHD, my favourite still is "Der Schuh des Manitu", but as in any parody you won't get many parts of it if you don't know the originals that are ridiculed (in this case mainly the old Winnetou movies, but also some Italo-westerns). And of course the very first Werner movie (cartoon scenes only) is a must.

Alex and the other who are watching HSS. As Schmidt is talking that much about his guests and I often think that we partially disagree on this one, let's check in how far we agree on this category. Given the three shows this week, I'd rate Wigald Boning good, Christian Ulmen mediocre and Der Mann mit der Gitarre horrible - what's your view?

Nice Idea starting this thread Olaf. (For that i will forget that your favorite german movie is "Der Schuh des Manitu") Tipp: Watch "Absolute Giganten". A low-budget Film playing in Hamburg. It's about three friends: One is leaving the city forever. The film is playing in the last night they spend together. Trust me: This is a really great little film!

Has anyone seen "Was passt nicht wird passiert gemacht" or something like that? Supposedly a good one from the people who made "Boom Bang Boom", which is another one of those german films i should see. Well I'd like to hear any opinions on either of them.

The films are both from Director Peter Thorward and they play both in the Ruhr-Area. Very, very funny. You should watch them in the original version because of the Ruhrgebiets-Dialect. Like Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund? Then get some cold beers and invite some buddys. You will definitly have a nice evening.

If I'm not totally mistaken, "Was nicht passt, wird passend gemacht" is with the guy from "Die Camper" (RTL show, 9.15 pm Fridays; name is Willy Thomczyk or similar). That's kind of a rough humour comedy, Ruhrpott-like as the Kaiser said. It's sometimes funny, but personally I wouldn't like it over a whole movie length.

Kaiser, admit it, you're just confused that the Indians in DSDM are speaking your dialect ;). Bri, whether you like it or not - you cannot leave Germany without having watched the two movies. "Der Schuh des Manitu" is the most successful movie in Austria ever and moved Titanic from the top. And "Werner - Beinhart" (forget about the other Werner movies) is almost northern culture - don't miss these movies!!! :)

A friend of mine from Bremen said that I had to watch the Werner movies before i came here, now i understand why. I've been wanting to see the others, now i'll make sure that it happens.

What a great topic, Olaf, Danke sehr! I wonder if this can be stickied?

Bought a CD by Mia: Hieb & Stichfest. Love it; sounds like modern NDW. My wife's into Herbert Groenemeyer (not quite sure when his last album came out, so I don't know if that qualifies). Mostly it's just hunting down the most obscure NDW on Kazaa, though :)

    @Kaiser Franz:
Ich meinte nicht dein Englisch, darüber würde ich nie urteilen. Ich dachte an das Bayrisch-Deutsch von Kaiser Franz und Bayern.

Don't know Mia. I'm no NDW fan, but the CD I mentioned is going to this direction with influence of some rock elements. Maybe you'd like it. The last Grönemeyer album should be from last year; it's not like the older ones, it's more melancholic and serious.

i agree with your ranking, but i think that Ulmen is very annoying so i would say that Ulmen and this Guitar guy were both quite bad.

Agreed, Ulmen has a horrible show on MTV - I just gave him some credit for a former relatively good appearance in the show. Generally, also seen at yesterday's guest (don't ask me for the name, the VOX pet woman, who was acceptable = the lowest category above does not need to return)

I prefer the old format with two guests per show. I think this would also help Schmidt because now (1 guest, 12 to 15 minutes) the guest decides a lot about the quality as he fills about 25% of the show. In former times there were 2 guests with about eight minutes each and when one was bad, then you could still rely on the other one. A short appearance bad guest is not that dramatic and also for Schmidt as interviewer easier to get along with. And also, he wouldn't have his current guest problems, although lots still would not need to return. In my suggested format you could say: Guitar guy is out of the show forever, Boning can come to the show about three times in two years, Ulmen about once in 18 to 24 months and the dog woman can return in about 30 months if she's still on TV at that time. In Schmidt's format you got to cut more consequent and basically only the top guests can return, so that a harder cut is necessary. And for absolute top guests of the category Jauch, Hanks, Gottschalk, etc. you can still switch to the one guest format.

    Die Nasenspülung ?

I thought that she was boring (but strangely that is exactly the type of women i am attracted to, so she can come back ;) )

wow, you realy make a science out of that ;)
I also think that two guests in 15 minutes would be enough most times (most celebrities simply aren't interesting enough to fill 15 minutes on TV, which is the reason why most TV shows suck).

But who cares about former guests ? Today Schmidt has STATUS QUO, the inventors of headbanging. Yeah !

    Don't remember that one

Well, if you were attracted by that woman yesterday, then you got serious problems ;)

No, it's just because they had this format previously and I think that this was one of the bad changes they made over the years. I am usually very brave with the guests, but if they got someone like Hella von Sinnen then I'm switching away sooner than Schmidt can pronounce her name - wouldn't happen if he had another guest later on.

That's another point. Often he has music guests and just lets them play their song. He should do an interview before or afterwards with (most of) them

The Jackass movie is excellent....just an extended version of the TV show, but very funny indeed. As for music, I am patiently waiting for the next Rammstein CD to be released.

    Check the track I mentioned:
    http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/AS...r=2-1/ref=sr_aps_prod_1_1/302-7145967-4367261

Scroll down a bit and click "1. Guten Tag (Die Reklamation)" and you'll get 30 seconds of the track to see if you like it.

Nice. Good beats; very synthy like I like my German music...

As the lyrics are completely unintelligible (probably also for native speakers :) ), what was the DDR-mäßigkeit to which one reviewer referred?

Also, do these kids have a full-length album out?

Re: Re: Re: Re: German Off-Topic Thread

The band was detected relatively new and they just had a real cheap video and was not prepared to success. The maxi-CD had to be printed anew and there is no album out yet. Admittedly the success is also because the singer looks pretty good (http://www.wirsindhelden.com/html/pics/Presse04g.jpg http://www.wirsindhelden.com/html/pics/Presse06g.jpg).

The text is a bit GDR like. Sounds like consume criticism, but I think they rather aimed on the habits in the music business.
