Fun fact: the FIFA World Cup trophy can only be lifted by players and coaches who won it, and high ranking politicians or heads of state.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because when the current trophy was unveiled during the inaugural ceremony of the 1974 World Cup, it was none other than Uwe Seeler who presented the trophy alongside Pelé who was holding the Jules Rimet trophy that had been awarded permanently to Brazil after winning it a third time.

So Uwe Seeler has the distinction of being the only footballer to hold the World Cup in his hands without ever actually winning it.

DFB mourns the loss of honorary captain SEELER
The German Football Association (DFB) mourns the loss of honorary captain Uwe Seeler, who died on Thursday at the age of 85. His achievements, his goals and his deeds will always be remembered in the DFB.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf: "In Uwe Seeler we are losing one of the best footballers Germany has ever had. After Fritz Walter, he was the second honorary captain of the DFB, an idol for generations, a real role model. Many of his goals are unforgettable, for example his legendary hit with the back of the head against England in the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup. But Uwe Seeler had an impact far beyond the football field. His down-to-earthness, his modesty and his connection to his hometown of Hamburg distinguished him throughout his life. With his foundation he campaigned for the needy and people who got into trouble through no fault of their own. He was also passionately committed to the DFB Sepp Herberger Foundation. His death makes us incredibly sad. Uwe Seeler will be missed by the DFB and all of German football. We will miss 'Us Uwe' very much ".

A role model in terms of fair play
Uwe Seeler played 72 international matches for Germany, scoring 43 goals. He took part in the World Cup four times and was a top scorer in each of these tournaments. He captained the national team at the 1966 and 1970 World Cups, finished vice-champion in England with the DFB team and finished third in the World Cup in Mexico. He spent his club career exclusively at Hamburger SV, for whom he played 476 games and scored 404 goals. With HSV, "Us Uwe" became German champion in 1960 and DFB cup winner in 1963. With 30 goals, he was the top scorer in the Bundesliga in the 1963/1964 season. Uwe Seeler has been named Germany's footballer of the year three times.
Uwe Seeler has set standards, both in terms of sport and fair play. Among many examples, what stands out is how, as captain of the German national team in 1966, he dealt with the injustice of the Wembley goal and the defeat in the World Cup final. With his fair congratulations he has set a model for decency and respect. In doing so, Seeler and his teammates brought a lot of sympathy to German football, the Germans in Germany and around the world.
First athlete to receive the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany

Even after the end of his career, Seeler always stood up for others. With his foundation, he set an example of social commitment and social behavior to the end. For decades he has done outstanding things for the DFB foundations, as chairman of the national players' club he shaped the sense of community among the former players, as a DFB delegation member at many international matches around the world he was a good ambassador for German football.
Uwe Seeler has received numerous awards for his work. In 1970 he was the first athlete to receive the Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2001 he was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor by the DFB and in 2018 he was inducted into the "Hall of Fame of German Football".

"We mourn the loss of a special person"
DFB general secretary Heike Ullrich: "Today is a sad day, not only for German football but for world football. Uwe Seeler was one of the great personalities of German and international football. Outstanding as a footballer and as a person. His successes and achievements are extraordinary DFB owes him a great debt of gratitude. Even after his great career, Uwe Seeler has always remained closely connected to our association - and we to him. He was the chairman of our club for national players for years, and was often part of the delegations at international matches and actively supported our bid to host the UEFA EURO 2024, which is also taking place in his hometown and heart city of Hamburg. His warmth and enthusiasm were contagious. We mourn the loss of an outstanding footballer, a special person. And a good friend."

National coach Hansi Flick: "Uwe Seeler was a role model for generations of national players. With his down-to-earth, modest and reserved manner, he also inspired people off the pitch and won them over. His name is a symbol of loyalty to the club and has stood at four World Cups he himself on the pitch, later he accompanied our national team to tournaments as honorary captain and part of the DFB delegation, for example to South Africa in 2010. We always enjoyed having him around. Uwe Seeler inspired us. All of us at the national team and at the DFB will miss him very much."

There was a minute of silence honoring Uwe Seeler at the Womens Euro QF between Germany and Austria. Nice touch.

In my All-Time Germany XI i could never quite decide on a partner for Gerd Mueller.
It always came down to either Seeler or Rummenigge.

Plenty of other strong options with Klinsmann, Rahn, Fischer, Klose, Voeller, Heynckes etc.

Hard to believe Germany has such a dry spell in this area in recent times

Foreign countries bow to Uwe Seeler († 85)
Uwe Seeler is dead. The 72-time national player and DFB honorary captain died on Thursday at the age of 85. The HSV club legend was also very popular and appreciated abroad.

The international press comments on the death of "Uns Uwe":

    Great Britain

"The Telegraph": "Regarded as one of the best German players of all time, Seeler was famous for his overhead kicks and his ability to score goals from the most unlikely angles. He was also known for his humility and fairness and was respected for his unwavering loyalty to hometown club Hamburger SV.”

The Guardian: Uwe Seeler, the indomitable striker who captained Germany in the 1966 World Cup final against England. Seeler, who died aged 85, has represented his country in four World Cups. (...) Before the elegant and technical era of Franz Beckenbauer, he represented the traditional strengths of German football: power, high morale, commitment and an indomitable will to win."

    Italy

"Gazzetta dello Sport": "Farewell to Uwe Seeler, a myth of German football dies at the age of 85. One of the best European strikers of all time is leaving: he was captain of the German team that lost the World Cup final in 1966 and one of the most important personalities in the history of Hamburg.

"La Repubblica": "Uwe Seeler is dead, one of the legends of German football. He was 85 years old and one of football's greatest goalscorers. (...) Tore and Seeler, that was an inseparable connection."

    France

"L'Équipe": "The German football legend Uwe Seeler is dead. In the history of the World Cup, only four players have scored at least one goal in four different tournaments: Pelé, Miroslav Klose, Cristiano Ronaldo and...Uwe Seeler."

    Spain

“Marca”: “Ex-soccer player Uwe Seeler, one of the legendary names in German football alongside Kaiser Franz Beckenbauer, has died at the age of 85. Seeler was a very charismatic and popular personality.”

"As": Germany and especially the city of Hamburg and HSV mourn the loss of one of the great icons of the city and football. The Hamburg and German legend Uwe Seeler died at the age of 85 (...) A great one is leaving."

    Switzerland

"Blick" : "Sad news from Germany. Soccer legend Uwe Seeler is dead. (...) Seeler is considered the greatest HSV player in history. He played over 580 games for Hamburg and scored almost 500 goals. He made 72 appearances for the German national team and kicked in four times at a World Cup. As captain, he lost the legendary World Cup final against England at Wembley with Germany in 1966. (...) Seeler was down to earth, always a role model, straightforward, open-hearted."

20 year old Franz Beckenbauer beats the great Lev Yashin as Germany KO the Soviet Union in the World Cup Semifinal.

Injury and mental health issues put him on a sharp decline after winning the World Cup in 2014. By the time Schuerrle was a Dortmund player, he became an unfortunate shell of his former self and gradually lost more and more interest in playing the game anymore

Yeah, a real shame he couldn't handle being on top. Anyway Schürrle will forever be a national hero.

I hope he's enjoying life with his wife and daughter.

Schuerrle's had some good years in his career at Mainz, Leverkusen and then one decent-ish season at Chelsea and Wolfsburg. But I think he'll be best remembered for his contributions on the NT. He's part of a niche group in recent history that tend to excel better playing for country than perhaps for the club level

its clear Schurrle HATED club footy. Hates negative vibes, excessive competition etc,

in NT feels like he was more happy and more prideful than he was after he left Germany

    Nice honor for Gerd there.

Seeing as they almost never get picked to win these type of awards they should also look at giving a seperate award to the best defender, they could call it the Beckenbauer trophy.
and then for good measure after Neuer retires they can look at renaming the lev yashin trophy:p
