German Fraulein National Team 2020 & beyond

3rd Yellow for Germany now.... Hegering in the book for another nothing foul. This match isn't like that..

EDIT: and now a second yellow for Denmark = a red card... what!?

 

I can now see why the Danish keeper does not trust her defense. They are very good at being in the wrong position much of the time. A 3 back is hard to play well against a good attacking team and Denmark does not appear to have the players to play a 3 back against a team like Germany.

 

Two things:

1. I've never seen Germany play that well. They seem to have gained an identity and they're finding form at the right time. Germany showing up at tournaments back?

2. I've never seen Denmark play that poorly, they didn't handle the German press well at all. And looked scared, to me, in terms of playing out of the back. They weren't brave to carry the ball past the German press or find the correct outlet pass out wide, constantly getting the ball picked in the middle third.

Conclusion, it's one game so I'm not getting over excited but this gives me hope for Germany and their chances in this tournament and beyond. German international football back?

4-0 Germany and, like the US vs Jamaica yesterday, it was not that close. Actually the US won 5-0 but the matches were similar as were the results.

 

Finally, that was how I expect Germany's wnt to play... Well done MVT, well done to the players, as both looked completely assured about what they wanted to accomplish today, and it produced the best performance for the wnt in YEARS!

 

Those cards are thanks to a ridiculous ref. She was making poor decisions all the time, and it resulted in far too many cards being shown today.

 

Maybe because MVT has finally started to play her players in their natural positions... Hendrich and Hegering are great CBs and Oberdorf is probably a future Ballon d'or winner...

so let's just hope that MVT doesn't start to overcomplicate things now. She has some really good subs available to her too...

 

The problem that Denmark had was with the way they played, or didn't play, the three back.
I have always preferred a 3-4-3 as it is the most versatile base formation but, in a match like this one, Denmark should have instructed one or two players, I usually used the defensive mid and/or both the outside mids but it can be any midfield player(s) or even attackers, and instruct them to play extremely conservatively and not join the attack until the ball is well up field.
The 3-4-3 as it is traditionally played is just too offensive a set to be used in that way against a team that attacks like Germany.

 

Players in roles they can actually function, and a clear identity in how everything starts from their pressing opponents defenders effectively.

Without the goals, it just looked like a real German wnt again...

Germany's pressing was crazy good tonight. And even when Denmark got the ball to their forwards, Oberdorf was constantly applying a tough opponent for Harder to beat, with Hendrich and Hegering maintaining a constant calming presence too.

Harder and her fellow forwards shut down so effectively, they would resort to fouling German players in an attempt to remove Germany's control on proceedings. It's easy to forget, Germany actually have good players lol. Even the commentators I was listening too, had to admit 30 mins into the match it's still Germany filled with Wolfsburg, and Bayern players...

 

Honestly... given how poor this team has looked for so long, this one performance was a ridiculous leap forward in quality; and will probably be underrated by many people not fully aware of the genuine frustration most fans have endured watching them play lol.

 

Now I need to get a fix of poorer soccer so I will be watching the CONCACAF matches at 19:00 EDT and 22:00 EDT
Canada will be a redeeming part of those games but the rest are only slightly above crap.

 

Real CB's made a huge contribution to Germany's control of the match, and like you... I also saw Oberdorf looking very dominant in a role I still believe her best position...

They looked like a TEAM, and had both Hendrich - Hegering provide the composed accurate passing that allowed Oberdorf to focus on stopping Harder gather any momentum.

If used correctly, the subs rule allowing 5, becomes a HUGE advantage for MVT. As we all witnessed, they didn't get weaker with their changes, but actually remained the same, or got stronger in each area player replaced.

 

The next game is the focus... not the potential of another 5.

But with the squad she has, Beyond the CB's and Oberdorf, there's really no reason why MVT can't rotate players.

 

I feel like it will be about avoiding mistakes such as the first goal they allowed against Sweden in the 2019 WC… and when they inevitable happen, have a player to secure or put some pressure so the opponent doesn’t face goal alone against the goalie

and the pressing today was… really good. Will be interesting to see how they handle it against the very good technical game of Spain

 

Germany played the right way, and comfortably beat an opponent many (including me) felt a 1st test of where they currently stand. So I wouldn't call this a statement victory, but I would say it definitely reminded people Germany are still here...

I'd give POTM to Magull, simply because she ran the show while she was on the field. But both CB's, Huth, and Oberdorf, should all be credited for their efforts, as Schüller's selfless running would also set the tempo in Germany high energy pressing too.

 

We just saw the wnt perform close to the players actual potentials... There's something significantly bigger at play here, than Germany avoiding mistakes lol.

We've seen they CAN play well.. As Germany's wnt played a major role in a good display of tournament football, against a relatively good team, and completely dominated proceedings, with MVT as their head coach... wow, lol.

This the next test for MVT. And believe me when I say this... if she can get her team to showcase the correct way to play against a possession orientated side like Spain, Germany should be considered a LEGIT threat to win this competition...

 

I would say that if Germany does as you say they will even be a solid threat at the WWC.
I see them as, if their play continues as it was in this match, a real contender for the WWC and more than a little threat to the US and Canada. I think the next WWC winner will come from either Europe or North America (excluding the pathetic Mexico) I do not think, at this time, that Asia or Africa or South America have any teams that are good enough to win a WWC.

But I do understand that mostly in soccer any remotely decent team can beat any other on any given day so the games must be played before a true result can be determined.

 

Yeah, these footballers can actually play football when they're used in their right positions. Seeing Hendrich, Hegering, and Oberdorf yesterday really cemented that there's a certain level of maturity and class here that will give Germany some decent defense and stability no matter who they face...

Dare I say Hegering's the best CB I've ever seen playing for the NT? Her game is truly superb. But no one's 100% flawless, and if you watch the first goal Sweden scored last WC, it's those scenarios that must be avoided. She won basically everything yesterday though, but small mistakes are bound to happen, which is why Hendrich and the defense have to be compact when they face tougher opposition. Hegering's game has way more pros than this one con though... but they could go out

And let's see how Gwinn and Rauch fare defensively against tougher opposition too

 

The fact female players seem to reach their peak years much later than men... I'd say yes; but as long as MVT can see this good start through to a point Germany have a genuine team again, as it's clear this group could definitely peak for the next WWC.

But again... for that to happen, it 100% depends on MVT showcasing she can get the best from the player pool during these Euro's, so it can be improved further for the next WWC.

 

I have said on numerous occasions, women's international football has basically resorted to everyone doing bad imitations of the USwnt..; in turn making WWC success an far easier path for the USwnt to navigate.

From the unique approaches from Brazil, China, Japan, DPR Korea, Germany, Norway, Sweden all posing a legitimate threat to the USwnt, the general quality slowly regressed to people having to fraudulently overhype the credentials of an increasingly smaller number of challengers now.

In the period of Germany's downward spiral, the USwnt has pulled further away from the chasing pack...

 

With it's awful leadership, Germany's wnt have had to face this reality more and more over recent years. 3 different coaches within a 4 year span of time, the epic waste of resources has seen the team struggle to beat the likes of Israel...

 

I feel we could have seen something like this sooner, if MVT/the coaches just trust the league and the junior wnt's... Germany regularly having CB's featuring in the 'best of' junior tournament lists, with the league home to very obvious defensive talent too.

It's nice to finally see Hendrich at 30 - Hegering at 32, playing together with an assured maturity, but it shouldn't have needed both of them coming together so deep into their careers, to finally allow talents like Oberdorf, Lattwein, Lohmann, to play in their better suited CM roles.

Hegering was also playing next to Doorsoun during that tournament... within a team that didn't come close to mirroring the aggressive compact pressing style we witnessed Vs Denmark.
