from watching Germany’s NT regularly since 2013, I would say this is the best team they ever had. Got to give a lot of credit to Wuck, finally giving a jewel of a coach that’s they’ve missing for so long. Also what’s helped was the NT retirement from of quite a few previous aging regulars like Popp, Hegering, Huth & others. This current squad of around 22-27 year olds is fit to the teeth & all playing in their prime. I think their going to go far whether it’s the Euros or Nations League. The main thing now is not to become over confident & have an hard working pre Euros training camp
Nations League Finals Germany vs France Spain vs Sweden Final/Third place Germany/France vs Spain/Sweden Home and away matches - Semifinal in October and final/third place in November/December.
mixed feelings on this one; at #11, France is the lowest ranked of the four, Got 6 straight wins in group play, but arguably the weakest of any of the Nations League groups. Despite their low rankings, France won the last 2 out of 3 games vs Germany or at least so far in the 2020’s. Legends like Renard & LeSommer didn’t make the Euro squad, so they too be bringing in more youth this time. Never watched much of the French League before, but with Jule Brand now in it, I guess I’ll have too Despite its high #2 rankings, I believe Spain’s never beaten Germany before, so based on being unbeaten probably should have been the preferred opponent. Sweden’s arguably the most consistent team in Europe, always giving a good accounting of themselves year after year and that’s despite their top players barely visible at the club level. I mean both their #9’s, Blackstenius & Blomqvist aren’t even starters on their respective clubs. A bunch of them now play for 2nd division, London Lioness. It’s been a while since Germany played them with GE having a slight win record since the 2010’s. They too, probably would have been preferred over France. but there’s got to be an reason why France is so low ranked
France have won all four matches since last World Ranking and Netherlands were only 10 points ahead of them. So they will be back in the Top 10 next week (New ranking: 12th June). France won the last match in Nations League 2024 but Germany has won both matches in 2022: Euro and a friendly (both 2:1 with Popp scoring all German goals).
Sara Doorsoun just announced her retirement from international football after being told in her own words that she was "only on call for the tournament" aka not a guaranteed starter.
Are we even pretending like Doorsoun deserved to be a guaranteed starter though? Been great for Frankfurt but got some glaring weaknesses in her game A very good sweeper defender though in her best days but super prone to some awful mistakes
I think "on call" (auf Abruf) means she would only be in EURO squad if someone gets injured (in her case a defender).
Prediction of Euro squad by "90min": Goal Berger - Johannes - Mahmutovic Defence Gwinn - Minge - Knaak - Linder - Kett - Hendrich - Wamser - Kleinherne Midfield Senß - Nüsken - Dallmann - Freigang - Lohmann - Däbritz Attack Bühl - Brand - Schüller - Cerci - Hoffmann - Zicai
Could be but that's not how I understood it. She was regularly called-up for qualifiers, played in the starting 11 in several games and was in the World Cup roster just 2 years ago (started against Morocco but was injured afterwards). It would be a bit weird if she didn't made it to the EURO squad.
No I don't think she deserved to be a guaranteed starter BUT she often was in the past 3 years or so.
If healthy, I think this would have included Winkler as the wnt's new #1. But without her, this should be expected. Kett over Simon will always confuse me, but with Wamser taking over Wolters place at club level, it probably makes sense for her to come into the Euro's squad as the next reserve RB choice. Then without CB's like Solano, knowing Doorsoun chosen retirement after being placed on the on call list, it's also untestable why we're seeing Knaak be elevated to the Euro's team. However... the big question here has to be all about who starts next to Minge, no? In my opinion Hendrich's known quality and seniority the factors that take precedent here, as I don't see Knaak ever being a better CB, or being the long term CB option to select post Euro's either. If Wück wakes up to the reality his team would function overall more effectively with one of Senß/Nüsken in the DM pivot role, while one of Lohmann/Däbritz constantly starting as CM's, this mid-field could still be very potent come the Euro's. However, should Wück be 100% honest with his squad selection, looking towards the future of this team, he'd also consider replacing Freigang with a superior young AM/CAM talent like Alara.... I have some MAJOR concerns with this teams attacking department... Bühl - Schüller - Brand combining as the obvious first choice front 3, beyond Cerci though... we have absolutely zero evidence of Hoffmann, or Zicai, being attacking talents able to perform on the elite stage of international football. Plus watching Wück refusing to ever consider Cerci actually a legit #9 continues problematic, when he's constructed a squad with a fraudulent CAM like Freigang constantly making it 4 strikers in his squad... This team's style of play highly dependant on it's forwards being effective within transitional 1v1 scenarios, the limited options beneath Bühl and Brand look incredibly underwhelming for a wnt player pool I'm sure existing in it's most exciting era for winger/wide forward related depth. In my opinion seeing Wamser join the game as a late sub as a wide forward Vs Austria being completely unacceptable, knowing just between Mahmoud, Zicai, Alber, Endemann, Bender, Elmazi, Schimmer, the senior wnt has at least 4/5 names here with the traits necessary for modern day elite level wingers in women's soccer. A talent like Anyomi not going to the Euro's only makes sense if it's due to Cerci playing back up #9, not Hoffmann. But if Zicai still injured, there's NO WAY we should be seeing options like Wamser in the wnt ahead of Endemann, or Mahmoud, as next best winger/wide forward options.
My Euro's squad Would look like this.... GK 1st Choice Berger 2nd/3rd Johannes - Mahmutovic DF 1st Choice Gwinn - Minge - Hendrich - Linder 2nd Choice Wamser - Kleinherne - Knaak - Kett MF 1st choice Lohmann - Nüsken - Dallmann 2nd choice Alara - Senß - Däbritz AT 1st choice Bühl - Schüller - Brand 2nd choice Endemann - Cerci - Zicai If Zicai not healthy, even if Mahmoud probably deserves the opportunity... I'd honestly still take Alber. Both Endemann, and Alber, also100% capable of being replacement 3rd option FW's if necessary, while Alara is blatantly a tactically/technically superior AM over Freigang. And within a 4-3-3 using a DM pivot, we'd also see this combination of 23 players provide opportunities for a more balanced Euro's team. 1st Team Bühl ------------------------- Schüller ----------------------- Brand ------------ Dallmann ----------------------- Lohmann ---------------- -------------------------------- Nüsken --------------------------------- Linder -------- Hendrich --------------- Minge ---------- Gwinn --------------------------------- Berger ------------------------------------- 2nd Team Alber ---------------------- Cerci ----------------------- Endemann -------------- Alara ----------------------- Däbritz -------------------- ------------------------------ Senß --------------------------------- Kett -------- Knaak ------------------- Kleinherne -------- Wamser -------------------------- Mahmutovic ------------------------------------
Auf Abruf: Alara, Rafaela Borggräfe, Gia Corley, Laura Dick, Vanessa Diehm, Vivien Endemann, Lisanne Gräwe, Maria Luisa Grohs, Paulina Krumbiegel, Shekiera Martinez, Felicitas Rauch, Pia-Sophie Wolter
3 GK’s but only 9 field players? I did mention Diehm as an possible call up(even though she hadn’t played yet for the senior NT) and interesting fact; only two current members of Wolfsburg whereas MVT had 11 of them for the WC is Anyomi on the injury list?—-would of picked her over Zicai at the seniors, but not even making the ‘on call’ squad is odd
I never really believed the wnt coaches possessed the fortitude to select Alara ahead of Freigang lol, but damn... I'm always going to see this attack as a legit downgrade when the teams style of play is still all about quick transition football, but hopes to change the flow of games with options like Cerci, Hoffmann, Zicai, Freigang, as the teams 2nd choice attacking options... Hoffmann not only playing a very different style of football to all the other forwards in this squad, also a clear downgrade from Schüller, Cerci, and Anyomi, who for me all look far superior international level talents. Cerci not a real winger/wide forward, watching her natural off ball movements with the wnt seeing her move centrally, in the process forcing more pressure on to her FB to provide the teams main source of width. Zicai being technically impressive in tight spaces, always prefers the ball to feet because she lacks the raw speed over long distances to beat strong FB's in 1v1 duels chasing long balls into space out wide. With Freigang a highly underwhelming presence tactically in most games (she plays like a FW, not a CAM), who's tactical weakness see's the team playing with 2 forwards and therefore one less mid-fielder, as we typically watch her wasting anything positive Vs the games better opponents... If Germany's starting Euro's 11 has an attack which looks strong.... then it's 2nd choice options for sure lack the qualities I'd typically associate with legit game changers... Cerci the only effective bench option here, and that's all because she's simply a damn good player lol.
I'm not seeing any information about who's the other CB to start next to Minge... meaning there's still a little hope sanity prevails here, and we see Hendrich starting ahead of Knaak lol... Kett has ZERO experience as a LB on any level of the game though, and therefore will be learning this role with each appearance she makes with the wnt. While Wamser being selected could be slightly concerning if the coaches continue to think she's another legitimate winger/wide forward option. There's also a few doubts with this mid-field too, as Senß - Nüsken appear pretty unbalanced within a double 6; and this even though we all know the benefits that come along with the potential addition of a Lohmann, or Däbritz into this team in a box to box CM role. Meaning I still believe this team could be far better cohesively, able to retain a more compact shape, if it used a DM pivot at the base of the mid-field. But also recognise this team isn't the beginning of anything... but actually the end for a long standing core of players... ================================ Post Euro's we'll be seeing new #1 GK, new CB's, new/returning CM/AM's, returning and new FW/WF's. Me thinking the combination of MVT's failure, and Hrubesch's second run with the team, really negatively effected what should have been a natural cycle for players entering/exiting this player pool. And what should have been Wück as a new coach creating a new core for the Euro's, just ended up with him feeling forced to leverage the WC/Olympics squad as the foundations to restart the wnt rebuilding process. Which for me means instead of the Euro's, the WC will likely be the genesis of Wück's vision for the wnt.
