Mevius needs to be turned into a soccer player; her 1v1 skills would be invaluable to Horst & which is surely lacking currently in his squad. Hopefully before today’s game time, Horst shows his team watch a replay of the come home from behind, grit & determination, win as an inspiration. Germany had to over come the King of Spain attending the game, but had the Kaiser himself. Dirk Nowitzki, cheering them on!
@blissett Trinity for Balon D’Or? . But some good news for Japan as their the youngest team at the Olympics so a brighter future? US had the 5th youngest squad, Germany lagging behind at only 8th or 5th oldest I would still have to say the J coach underestimated the NWSL by not choosing Sugita or Muira. The NWSL can now boast even having arguably Germany’s most credited player at this tourney , Berger(she’s NWSL, not Bundi!) Sugita had excellent stats for the Thorns/Im liking Muira more than Rauch over at the Courage in rhe Total-Futebol style thr club plays with—yet Rauch made the German NT so something’s to ponder….
I don't believe it.... Popp will miss the semi final due to infection, and has been replaced in the match day squad with Anyomi... wow!
My previous pre, 1st game suggestion was to low block the US, but Germany decided to play instead—the too adventurous for their own good—-attacking defenders which left them exposed to the US decisively very quick 1v1 counter attacking style(so for the one goal that FB Gwinn got, gave up four goals in return) Unfortunately low blocking didn’t look like an good fit either vs Canada as Lawrence & Leon had no problem penetrating it(it’s just their finishing was poor, whereas US better sharpshooters would of probably put those turn away) It probably be unwise to go for the PK shootout as well(whereas both GER:CAN were content to go that way in the previous match as both stayed deeper than usual )because this time Emma Hayes will know everything about Berger since she coached her for several years & putting an otherwise unused Frohms this late in an game usually doesn’t work either my best advise for Germany is to frustrate the US enough to throw them out of their own game plan. To do this Germany got to start harassing & foiling US fwds before they make their lethal runs into deep territory, so in otherwise play very physical around the midfield area. Probably will have to give up a lot of yellows, but just don’t back down and fight with a lot if grit & determination instead(the players felt a bit intimidated in the 1st game) both Brand & Buhl looked hesitant first time around, but now need desperately to get their confidence back, both gave up a lot of tackles, but the two defenders that gave them in hard time , Davidson & Fox, might not be at 100% and Hayes seems now wanting to play with an 3-back, eerily similar to her over confident display when she took in Wolfsburg a few years ago—-so yeah, in an perfect world, this time Brand & Buhl got to display their inner ‘Tabea Wassmuth’ & hit those US defenders hard with an intense pressure to get that cone turnover for an surprise goal
This changes A LOT about this team now. Hrubesch's mid-field the weakest department of his Olympic team, Popp was still somehow performing as his best CM over the 4 matches played so far. Meaning for the first time during these Olympics, without Hrubesch doing something absolutely crazy like start Freigang..., we'll probably be witnessing a mid-field trio created from 3 real mid-fielders today... My idea about Hegering starting as the DM/Libero still stands, with Solano as a CB being the player to replace Popp. But with the news Popp and Linder basically having no more time in this tournament, Hrubesch's job might of got harder, but also potentially a little more straight forward with the way he wants this team to play One of Senß, or Lohmann, should come directly into the starting 11. And if Hrubesch smart here, he also looks at changing Brand for Endemann too. Brand's mindless runs leading to nothing, having no positive effect on a team which could use Endemann's more mature approach to attack open space Vs USA
2 key stats on show during the 1st half Vs USA, had the US wining 20 of 27 ground duels, Vs Germany only succeeding 7 times from their 27 ground duels.... USA also succeeding in 1v1 dribbles 4 out of 7 attempts, Vs Germany's being successful 0 times from their 5 attempts. Similar concerns arising over the 2nd half Vs Canada, clearly there's a major issue to be solved here. Meaning Germany doing something different in a second encounter Vs a far more tactically structured USwnt makes absolute sense. And with the first encounter with USA seeing Brand, Popp, Rauch, Hendrich, Nüsken, all being so ineffective, Hrubesch could still turn the loss of Popp into an opportunity to create a better overall team now. Bühl ------------------- Schüller ---------------- Endemann ------------ Senß -------------------- Nüsken ------------------ Rauch ---------------- Hegering ------------------ Gwinn -------- Solano --------- Hegering ------------- Hendrich --------- or Bühl ------------------- Schüller ---------------- Endemann ------------------------ Lohamann ------------------ Rauch ---------- Senß ------ Minge ---------- Gwinn -------- Hegering -------------------- Hendrich --------- This could genuinely see Germany be a more balanced team now..... and this while a strong club season having Anyomi becomes another forward option from the bench to potentially replace Schüller...
Poppi must be the unlickiest woman in football, how many major finals or semi finals has she now missed due to injury. So disappointed for her
a lot of bleeping high pressure up top, could cause quick turnover conversions—especially if Hayes going with just an three-back tactical fouls needed at midfield to stop the American attacks from materializing
Every time this team gets to a major tournament, every voodoo doll, ancient curse, and bad luck charm, gets used against key players all at once....
I see Linder potentially returns to the team, but this in the backdrop of loads of various problems arising for players, forcing them to be absent from competing for this team right now... and it's crazy... Today Germany missing talent like..... Popp ---- Schüller ---- Sellner ----- Magull ------ Däbritz ------ ------------- Oberdorf ----------- And this happening knowing Hrubesch would bring FOUR CB's to this tournament, fearing he wouldn't be able to consistently field healthy defenders lol. Now we could be looking at this being some of Hrubesh's selection options for an Olympic semi final Vs the USA... Bühl --------------- Freigang/Anyomi ----------------- Brand/Endemann ----------------------- Senß/Lohmann -------------------- --------------- Minge ------------- Nüsken ---------------- Only 3 of the 6 positions here potentially filled with real first choice options. And this with my worst fear of seeing another starting 11 with Freigang and Nüsken, all set to happen lol. After seeing what these two accomplished Vs Iceland, damn.... could the USwnt be the absolute worst possible opponent for this to happen again...
Bühl ---- Brand ---- Endemann...., could this work as a front 3...? In the absence of Schüller, and Popp, I'd honestly rather see Brand deployed as a #9 in a game of transition Vs the US. I've seen Freigang struggle within Frankfurt's system when the team requires transition football. And even if Brand not a great shooter, the one thing she's consistently provided this team during this tournament is a relentless work rate, and a desire to go 1v1 while dribbling the ball.

Probably mercy start as Horst shuttering the thought Lohmann possibly taking an PK shot again! I like Anyomi at #9 as she’ll give a more athletic look, but why didn’t he start Linder as well? Last time Rauch got buried by Trinity

Germany playing much better so far than in their first game against the US, Anyomi and Brand offering a lot of options going forward.
Germany doing really well in central mid to deep defense, but that got to give up possession to do it I guess Brand got to play both CAM & winger?
The tightening up of the central area has been working so far, but given very few chances on the other end. Wonder if Horst going to switch over to an more attacking stance for the 2nd half
