looks like georgia is trying to get the money to build a stadium i just hope their not building it for the beat..... http://gasoccer.org/org/orgnewsitem.asp?o=819&wzb=1&nws=430326
Wow. I thought the "Georgia Soccer Park" thing was dead and buried a couple of years ago. Their domain expired last year. Unless there's an MLS team on the horizon, I think a Beat/Silverbacks targetted stadium with 7-10k stands would be perfect. I like the approach in Cary. SAS soccer park currently has a main stadium (SAS Stadium) of 7,200 seats, expandable to around 9k. The original site designs featured a main stadium of 22k. It was one of the contestants for the USSF National Training Center. The interesting fact is that SAS Stadium is not on the location of the proposed 22,000 seat, but an upgraded secondary field. They have left the site of the proposed main stadium completely undeveloped. That means that if interest/money appears, they'll have the land to build a 22k seat SSS stadium on the grounds. Meanwhile, the Courage have a beautiful stadium that is just the right size for their needs. No need to build a 20k seat stadium in Atlanta unless someone is going to fill it up. And the Beat and Silverbacks ain't gonna do that.
That's a really good location. Where'd they find the land? I wonder if the Beat will move out to share their ground after it is finished.
Here's the official link to the project: http://www.atlantasoccervillage.com/ According to the site, the land has yet to be purchased. 5 Sites are under consideration. -r
The Atlanta Soccer Village project has been dead for a while. If you check out the news on their website, the last update was in 1999. The location at spaghetti junction is actually a pretty good site. It is an old drive-in theater lot that was abandoned about the time they changed 285/85 intersection from a cloverleaf to the current Spaghetti junction configuration. There is a master plan shown over on the club's website. Supposedly, groundbreaking is to happen this spring. I find that more optimistic than 60-90 days.
