Remembering the late Great George Best. 22nd May 1946 - 25th November 2005. George Best was a Northern Irish professional footballer who played as a winger, spending most of his club career at Manchester United. A highly skillful dribbler, he is considered as one of the greatest players of all time. He was named European Footballer of the Year in 1968 and came fifth in the FIFA Player of the Century vote. Best received plaudits for his playing style, which combined pace, skill, balance, feints, two-footedness, goalscoring and the ability to get past defenders. ABOUT 1968 European Football Player of the year who unexpectedly retired in the prime of his career at the age of 27; scored 137 goals in 361 appearances for Manchester United between 1963 and 1974. BEFORE FAME He was a member of the Orange Order, which was important to his whole family. TRIVIA He was one of the first European Football players to become a celebrity, however, many felt this ultimately led to his demise. FAMILY LIFE He married his first wife, Angela MacDonald-Janes, in 1978 and had his first son, Calum, in 1981. ASSOCIATED WITH He and Peter McParland both played for the Northern Ireland national team in the 1960s.
79 years ago a footballing genius was born! Today would have been George's 79th Birthday. There is nothing really I can say about George that hasn't already been said. He is the one player in the world who everyone knows, whether they have an interest in football or not.
"Last Farewell for the Belfast Boy" A 31 year old George Best on the occasion of his last ever appearance for Northern Ireland. A World Cup Qualifier against Netherlands on a sun kissed Autumn afternoon at Windsor Park in October 1977. Visible in the background is Ruud Krol. A crowd of some 33,000 were there in attendance for the last farewell to Belfast's favourite son. And I was truly thankful to be one of them.
