This excerpt is from the following article about the Estrada confirmation hearings: http://msnbc.com/news/873172.asp?0cv=CB20 Here is the excerpt This topic really hits home for me since I've also been branded as not being a "genuine" hispanic because I don't fit the political stereotype. What do you think about the comments from above?
Can you dance salsa and do you prefer corn to flour tortillas? Then you're genuine- I don't care what anybody else tells you.
Hispanics in general are a lot more conservative than most Americans think. They're always lumped into the "minority" category so the assumption is that they're automatically Democrats. I hate when self-appointed spokesmen/women talk for entire ethnic groups and make asinine statements like "Estrada doesn't speak for the Hispanic community" or "Estrada is not a TRUE Hispanic" (whatever that entails). Who the hell died & made this person the arbiter of all things Hispanic? It's ludicrous.
Only in Laura en America y en la Madre Patria, but in Mexico.........my roots improvised "He's hispanic by name, not by experience." Give me a break Juan. Be wary about any Legal Defense Fund organization. Those people are always looking to push their own agenda.
Sorry to interrupt this pity party with some facts. He's unfit for the job, no matter what color he is.
Interesting how the Repubs are the one's who seem to be creating this issue. Liberals have shown themselves to be completely able to go against blacks and Hispanics in the past. There are those on both sides of the political spectrum who believe that one's race should dictate their politics. This isn't a staple of one party or the other. Who benefits by making it a racial issue?
Re: Re: "Genuine" Minorities Thanks for the genaralizations. They add much to this debate. Hispanics also have larger penises than most people think. You can add that to your diatribe.
No one is claiming that this fight doens't extend to both sides of the aisle. The point in question here is the notion that you are or are not a "genuine" minority using some benchmark. If you want me to be unbiased about it we could extend the forum to discuss the notion by those on the far right that you're not a "real" conservative unless you follow the path of the far right. I left Estrada's confirmation itself completely out of it on purpose.
The real question for me is why you are falling for such a dopey proposition. Of course its a stupid statement, that only some people are genuine. Of course only cretins follow such a proposition. And of course anyone trying to seriously inject this into the debate is either an idiot (like the person who originally made the statement), or more commonly, by republicans trying to jack it up to make it seem like most liberals think that way.
Estada gave a completely ************************, disengenous answer to the question. This is remeniscent of Clarence Thomas' response that he had never discussed the issue of Roe v. Wade while in college. Which would have either made him a complete dope or a liar. Which is the only reason why I wouldn't have confirmed Thomas.
Roe v Wade? Who cares. How come no one has asked Estrada who he supported at the US-Honduras qualifier in 2001?
Re: Re: Re: "Genuine" Minorities Hispanics also have larger penises than most people think. You can add that to your diatribe. [/B][/QUOTE] I'm assuming you have first "hand" experience in this area. Estrada has little if any baggage. He came here when he was young and excelled through college & law school. More or less he's lived the American dream. Libs are upset because he might not view the world as they do. Too bad. Presidents are supposed to appoint like-minded people to the bench. It's one of the perks of the job. Clinton did the same thing.
Re: Re: Re: Re: "Genuine" Minorities And the Senate can choose not to confirm, which is what the GOP did under Clinton. Goose...gander.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: "Genuine" Minorities And what did the NOW-led inquisition of Clarence Thomas achieve? ZIP! Nice try by the Dems to make "pubic hair" a national issue. With Teddy Kennedy, Clinton & Condit on your side, pointing fingers again can't be easy.
Sheesh, the guy said that as a judge, he hasn't yet had to decide whether Roe v. Wade should be overturned. Why? Because he has never been a judge on the Supreme Court. I really don't even know the man, or the attorney or the judge. I just read the article. I really don't think he is being disengenuous. He is defnitely being evasive. But not disengenuous. You show me the Kennedy court memo that he wrote, and I will believe that he is being disengenuous. With regards to this whole snafu, I really hate, HATE how the legislative review of appointments has gone every single year they do it. They should only check qualifications, not positions on issues.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: "Genuine" Minorities Fixed. Although for a long-term cure, I recommend "Blinded by the Right."
Completely ahistorical position. Leave it to a conservative to be willing to overturn 2 centuries of tradition in order to enact their agenda.
