    Genoa 2-1 Juventus

Juventus scored in the 48th, Albert Gudmundsson equalized in the 87th, and Domeinco Criscito scored in the 90+5th for a surprise win. Geno had more shots, shots on goal (6 to 4), corner kicks, attacks, and dangeorus attacks. Genoa ended their streak of 23 games with 0 or 1 goal. Genoa is 18th with 28 points from 36 games. They passed Cagliari on head-to-head, but Cagliari has a game in hand. In a makeup game, Salernitana won 2-1 hosting Venezia. That got Salernitana out of the relegation zone for the first time since Matchday 1. On Sunday, 17th place Salernitana hosts 19th place Cagliari. It is disappointing that Genoa is -29 and trails Salernitana who is -41. Furthermore, last season every club that wasn't relegated was -20 or better, so it is unusual to survive while being outscored by a goal per game or more.

Genoa is in their fourteenth consecutive season in Serie A. I edited my previous post after falvo repped it.

After scoring a winner in stoppage time, stoppage time went well for Genoa again today. Salernitana led 1-0 hosting Cagliari. Salernitana got yellows in the 84th, 89th, 90+6th for delaying the game, and 90+7th. Cagliairi equalized in the 90+9th. With 2 games left, Salernitana has 30 points, Cagliari has 29, Genoa has 28, and probably only one will survive. Sampdoria and Spezia are next lowest with 33 points, and Genoa must win both game including at third place Napoli in order to pass one of them. Here are the tiebreakers. Genoa won both games against Cagliari. Salernitana got a win and a draw against Genoa. Cagliari and Salernitana played two 1-1 games, so the next tiebreaker is goal differential, and Cagliari's is 9 better. To survive, Genoa needs one of these:

3 points, Salernitana loses both, and Cagliairi gets 2 or fewer points
4 points, Salernitana gets 0 or 1 point, and Cagliairi gets 3 or fewer points
6 points, Salernitana gets 3 or fewer points, and Cagliairi does not win both

    Here are the remaining games:

    Matchday 37:
    Genoa at 3rd place Napoli
    Salernitana at 14th place Empoli
Cagliari hosts 1st place Inter, who could be in second then depending on AC Milan's game

    Matchday 38:
    Genoa hosts 13th place Bologna
    Salernitana hosts 12th place Udinese
Cagliairi is at last place Venezia

If Salernitana gets more points than Genoa on Matchday 37, that will relegate Genoa. Salernitana plays before Genoa, who plays before Cagliairi. If Salernitana wins, Genoa draws or loses, and Cagliari loses, Genoa and Cagliari will be relegated on Matchday 37. If Salernitana held on today, Genoa would have needed to beat Napoli and have Salernitana not beat Empoli to survive Matchday 37.

Salernitana got a 1-1 draw at Empoli. That means Genoa needs a point at Napoli tomorrow to have their last game be meaningful.

    Napoli 3-0 Genoa

I wondered why neither Flash Score nor Wikipedia marked Genoa as relegated, and I figured out why. Genoa trails Salernitana by 3 points with 1 game left, and Salernitana has the head-to-head tiebreaker. However, Genoa beat Cagliari twice, and Genoa would win a three-way tiebreaker with Salernitana and Cagliari. That requires Cagliari to draw both games including hosting second place Inter later today. If AC Milan wins and Inter draws, the draw will let AC Milan celebrate the title and Genoa have hope of surviving. If Cagliari does not draw, Genoa will be relegated. Genoa needs Cagliari to draw against the second place club and last place club. A two-way tie between Cagliari and Salernitana would make Cagliari survive because they played two draws and Cagliari has the better goal differential.

It's sad that Genoa is going down to Serie B.

Hopefully they will come back up quickly.

You posted before the relegation was clinched. Inter won 3-1 at Cagliari, which ended Genoa's chance of surviving on a three-way tie.

Genoa are poorly run. Too much turnover and random foreign players!

    Genoa 0-1 Bologna

Genoa finished 19th with 4 wins, 16 draws, 18 losses, and 28 points. Venezia played later and had a chance to get out of last with a win, but they played a 0-0 hosting 18th place Cagliari. Salernitana survived with 31 points, Cagliari had 30, and Venezia had 27. Genoa was not in the bottom three in goal differential. They scored 27, which was 6 fewer than Salernitana who scored the next fewest, and allowed 60, to be -33. That was better than Cagliari's -34, Venezia's -35, and Salernitana's -45. I did not check many seasons, but it must be rare to survive with a -45. Last season Parma was last with 20 points and -44.

Before the Serie B seasons starts this weekend, Genoa won 3-2 hosting Benevento in the Coppa Italia Round of 64. Benevento was relegated from Serie A in 2021 and finished seventh in Serie B in 2021-2022. The Coppa Italia is smaller than other top countries, with 20 clubs from Serie A, 20 from Serie B, and 4 from Serie C.

    Venezia 1-2 Genoa

Genoa opened their Serie B season by beating the only club that finished below them in Serie A last season. Next Genoa hosts Benevento, who was relegated out of Serie A in 2021 and finished seventh in Serie B in 2021-2022.

I am disappointed Genoa did not score hosting a club that opened with a 2-0 loss at home. Genoa has 4 points from 2 games. A majority of clubs play their second game today, so I am not going to post Genoa's table position when they have twice as many games as many other clubs.

    Pisa 0-1 Genoa

Caleb Ekuban, who scored once in 30 games last year, scored the only goal in the 29th. He has 3 goals in 12 games for the Ghanaian national team. Pisa had a player get a second yellow in the 85th. Pisa had more possession, passes, attacks, and shots. Genoa had more shots on goal, 6 to 4. No club has won all three games, and Genoa's 7 points has them losing the tiebreaker to Ascoli. The head-to-head tiebreaker is used after both games between clubs. Ascoli is +2 with 6 goals scored. Genoa is +2 with 3 goals scored. The top two get promoted without a playoff.

    Genoa 3-3 Parma

Genoa scored, allowed two, scored two, and allowed one. Parma equalized in the 89th, and luckily they could not take advantage of Genoa's Albert Gudmundsson's second yellow in the 90+2nd. Most of Genoa's statistics were better, but Parma had more free kicks and corner kicks.

On Marchday 4, Reggina, Frosinone, and Brescia won to tie for first with 9 points. Genoa is tied for fourth with Ascoli with 8 points. The 20 clubs combined to get 9 red cards, including two games where neither club finished with 11 men.

Genoa's next game is at Palermo, is is 13th with 1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses.

    Genoa 1-0 Modena

Genoa is in fifth place with 11 points from 6 games. Modena is in the relegation zone in eighteenth, so it was not impressive. Fifth through eighth must win three rounds of playoffs to be promoted. All of Genoa's games were decided by 1 goal or draws. Reggina and Brescia won their last four games and are tied for first with 15 points. Frosinone and Bari are tied for third with 12 points. After national teams play, Genoa goes to eighth place Spal.

    SPAL 0-2 Genoa

Genoa got a rare win by more than 1 goal in a game at SPAL, who is in their third Serie B season after finishing last in Serie A in 2019-2020. Massimo Coda scored in the 19th, SPAL's Biagio Meccariello was ejected in the 76th, and Albert Gudmundsson scored in the 88th. Genoa passed Frosinone to move up to fourth with 14 points from 7 games, and the top three have 15 points.

    Genoa 0-0 Cagliari

Genoa is sixth with 15 points from 8 games (over 20 percent of 38), and 4 points above Cagliari in ninth, which is the top position that does not make the promotion playoffs. Genoa is 1 point behind Ternana and Brescia who are tied for third for a playoff first round bye, and 3 points behind Reggina and Bari who are tied for first for automatic promotion. Brescia has 5 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses, but their goal differential is 0.

On Saturday, Genoa plays at eighth place Cosenza, who is coming off a 3-0 loss at first place Reggina. Italy uses the head-to-head tiebreaker after both games are played, and for now Reggina leads with a +14 to Bari's +9.

Genoa's 5 goals allowed are tied for the second fewest. If they can get a good forward in the winter transfer window, they could get automatic promotion.

    Cosenza 1-2 Genoa

Genoa played a majority of the game down a man, and still scored twice. They scored a penalty kick in the 31st, had a player get a second yellow in the 34th, and scored in the 37th. Cosenza scored a penalty in the 45+7th, and there were no goals or cards in the second half. Cosenza had only 1 shot on goal other than their penalty kick. In the second half, Cosenza had 56 percent of possession, but Genoa had more shots 6 to 2, and more shots on goal 3 to 0. Genoa scored 2 goals for the second time in three games.

Genoa moved up to fifth by passing Brescia, who lost. Ternana leads with 19 points from 9 games. Reggina, Frosinone, Bari, and Genoa have 18 points, and Genoa's +5 is the worst goal differential of the four. On Saturday, Genoa is at Ternana, and Ternana could fall to seventh.

Unlike top leagues, Serie B does not take a World Cup break.

    Ternana 1-2 Genoa

After having a goal taken away by VAR for offside in the 34th, Ternana scored in the 44th, and the scorer got a yellow right after. Massimo Coda scored a penalty in the 76th and the winner in the 78th. In the 90+1st, Ternana's manager was sent off. Genoa had better statistics with 67 percent possession, more shots (15 to 13), more shots on goal (8 to 5), over double the total passes (453 to 225), over 2.5 times the completed passes (385 to 147), more attacks (116 to 72), and more dangerous attacks (52 to 28). Genoa moved up to second and trails leader Frosinone on goal differential. They have 21 points from 10 games. Ternana fell from first to third. Genoa has the best form with 13 points in their last 5 games, meaning that they had 8 points in their first 5 games. They are the only clubs with fewer than 2 losses. Next genoa hosts sixth place Brescia.

    Genoa 1-1 Brescia

Filip Jagiello, who Genoa loaned to Brescia the previous two seasons, scored in the 31st. Genoa got yellows in the 50th and 77th, and unfortunately they were both to Milan Badelj. Genoa could not hold on Andrea Cistana equalized in the 90+4th, and got a yellow after that. Genoa had 63 percent possession, but 53 percent with no shots on goal in the second half. I do not have a way of finding out the possession percentage while Genoa was down a man.

The second through fifth place clubs had draws, including fifth place Bari hosting third place Ternana. Frosinone won and took a 2 point lead over second place Genoa. Genoa is the only club with 1 loss. Their 14 goals rank 11th. Genoa's next game is at fourth place Reggina, who will pass Genoa on goal differential if Reggina wins. Frosinone won their last four games, and next they host last place Perugia, who will move up two spots if they win hosting 15th place Cittadella tomorrow.
