Genoa opened with a 4-1 win hosting Crotone with four players scoring. Possession and shots were about equal, and Crotone had more attacks and dangerous attacks, but Genoa had more shots on goal (8 to 5). Genoa won consecutive Serie A games by at least 3 for the first time since a 5-1 win hosting Torino on 11 May 2015 and a 4-1 win at Atalanta on 17 May 2015.

    Napoli 6-0 Genoa

Napoli led 1-0 at halftime and scored in the 46th minute and went on to win by 6. Shots on goal were 11 to 1. Possession (57 percent), completed passes (58.4 percent), attacks (exactly 60 percent), and dangerous attacks (56.9 percent) were a majority for Napoli but much closer than goals and shots on goals. It was the first time Genoa scored or allowed at least 6 goals in a game that wasn't a friendly since a 6-1 loss at Napoli on 21 December 2011. It was the first time Genoa scored or allowed at least 6 goals in a game that wasn't at Napoli or in a friendly since a 6-1 win hosting Ternana in Serie B on 28 February 1999. https://www.flashscore.com/team/genoa/d0PJxeie/results/ has results going back to 1989-1990.

Genoa's last five games were decided by at least 3 goals with 2 wins and 3 losses. It must be rare to have that in five consecutive games if you win all five or lose all five, and even more rare with a 3-2 split. Genoa's last ten games have been half wins and half losses. I expect 1-1 to be the most common draw score and one of the most common scores (maybe second to 2-1), and it's Genoa's 27th consecutive game that wasn't 1-1. With 27 independent events with the probability of a 1-1 being 15 percent, the probability of 27 consecutive games without a 1-1 is 1.24 percent. Lowering the probability of a 1-1 to 10 percent raises the probability of 27 consecutive games without a 1-1 to 5.81 percent.

They're in 11th with 4 points from 4 games, and every club except for them and Torino has played 5 games.

    Genoa 0-2 Inter

Genoa had 39 percent of the possession and 1 shot, which wasn't on goal. Genoa has no goals and 1 point in their last 3 games after opening with a 4-1 win hosting Crotone, who is in last. Inter moved up to third. Next week Genoa plays at stadium-mate Sampdoria, who is in fifth.

    Sampdoria 1-1 Genoa

The score was tied for almost the whole game. Sampdoria scored in the 23rd minute, and Genoa's Gianluca Scamacca scored in the 28th minute. He's a 21-year-old forward, and it was his first goal for Genoa. Prior to Genoa, he played three Serie A games for Sassuolo in 2017-2018. The next best league he played in is the Eredivisie (Netherlands), where he played eight games from Zwolle. Before today, he had not scored in Serie A or the Eredivisie.

Genoa is 15th with 5 points from 5 games. Parma and Spezia also have 5 points, and the head-to-head tiebreaker isn't applicable because Genoa hasn't played either of them. On Wednesday at 5:00 P.M. Italy/5:00 P.M. CET/11:00 A.M. USA Eastern, Genoa hosts Torino in a makeup game. After that game, every Serie A club will have played six games. Torino allowed goals in the 90+5th and 90+8th minutes today to lose 4-3 hosting Lazio. That leaves Torino in nineteenth with 1 point. The only club behind them is Crotone, who has 1 point and has not played Torino. Genoa will move up at least three spots if they win. The exact amount depends on what happens when Verona hosts Benevento tomorrow.

    Genoa 1-2 Torino

Genoa dominated the statistics. Genoa had more shots on goal, 4 to 1, and and an own goal allowed Torino to score 2. Genoa scored in the 90+4th minute to avoid being shut out. Genoa has 5 points from 6 games with 6 goals scored and 12 goals allowed. Genoa is 1 point above the relegation zone. Torino entered with 1 draw and 4 losses, and they are now up to 4 points. Losing hosting Torino is very bad. All clubs have played six games. Crotone, who has 1 point, is the only winless club. Genoa hosts eighth place AS Roma on Sunday at 3:00 P.M. local/9:00 A.M. USA Eastern. With seventeenth place Spezia going to fourteenth place Benevento and eighteenth place Torino hosting last place Crotone, Genoa could end the weekend in the relegation zone. Spezia has 5 points, so if they get more points than Genoa they will pass Genoa. Torino has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Genoa and is 1 point behind, so they also will pass Genoa if they get more points than Genoa. Spezia plays on Saturday at 6:00 P.M. local/12:00 P.M. USA Eastern, and Torino plays at the same time as Genoa.

Genoa lost 3-1 hosting AS Roma. Combined with Spezia's win and Torino's 0-0, Genoa is eighteenth and in the relegation zone. In six games after their opening win, Genoa has 2 points, 3 goals scored, and 14 goals allowed.

    Udinese 1-0 Genoa

Rodrigo De Paul scored the only goal in the 34th minute. Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin got a red in the 90+7th minute, so Genoa will have to use their sub goalkeeper. Genoa has 11 shots, but only 1 was on goal. Udinese had 8 shots including 2 on goal. Genoa is 19th with 5 points from 8 games and a -9. They trail Torino on the head-to-head tiebreaker. The only club behind Genoa is Crotone, who has 2 points. Parma is the bottom club above the relegation zone with 6 points. Genoa hosts Parma on Monday 30 November at 8:45 P.M. local/2:45 P.M. USA Eastern.

https://www.fifa.com/news/the-week-in-numbers-x5377 says "1: North Macedonia qualified for their first ever major international tournament as they edged Georgia 1-0 on Thursday in their play-off. Goran Pandev scored the winning goal and if he makes an appearance at UEFA EURO 2020 he will have waited 20 years for his first major tournament since his debut for North Macedonia in 2001."

Genoa is struggling, but at least they had a player have a national team accomplishment.

    Sampdoria 1-3 Genoa

Sampdoria scored in the 18th. Gianluca Scamacca equalized in the 60th, Lukas Lerager scored the winning goal in the 68th, and Scamacca scored in the 72nd. It's really rare for Genoa to scored 3 goals that close together. It was in the Coppa Italia Round of 32. The Round of 16 will be from 13 to 20 January, and the top eight clubs enter, with each of them facing a club who started in the Round of 64 like Genoa did or earlier. Genoa will face Juventus, and tomorrow there will be a draw to determine which club hosts the game. Juventus will be big favorites regardless of the site. I'm happy with Genoa reaching the Round of 16.

    Fiorentina 1-1 Genoa

Genoa played four days ago, but I didn't type about it here until now. Genoa scored in the 89th minute, and Fiorentina equalized in the 90+8th. Fiorentina had more shots, 16 to 3, and shots on goal were 8 to 3. Genoa has 6 points from 10 games, are in the relegation zone by 3 points, and host fourth place Juventus on Sunday (tomorrow) at 6:00 P.M. local/12:00 P.M. USA Eastern. Then Genoa hosts AC Milan, who's in first by 5 points, and then Genoa goes to 13th place Benevento.

    Benevento 2-0 Genoa

Genoa had 60 percent of the possession, but Benevento had 60 percent of the shots on goal (3 to 2). Benevento scored in the 57th and clinched a win with a penalty kick in the 89th. Torino (7 points) is above Genoa (7 points) on head-to-head tiebreaker, and Crotone is last with 6 points. The bottom clubs above the relegation zone are Fiorentina and Spezia with 11 points, which is 4 more than Genoa. Every club except for Atalanta and Udinese has played 13 games. 38/3 = 12 2/3, so about one-third of the season has been played. Genoa goes to Spezia on Wednesday at 8:45 P.M. Italy and CET/2:45 P.M. USA Eastern. Seven Genoa players and five Spezia players will not play due to injury.

In 17.5 years from 1 July 2003 to now, that's 27 managerial stints. That's a difference between soccer and sports in the USA. Soccer national teams and clubs change managers more often than Americans are used to.

    Spezia 1-2 Genoa

Spezia got yellows in the 2nd and 5th and their only goal in the 10th. Mattia Destro equalized in the 16th. Domenico Criscito had the winning penalty kick in the 73rd. Spezia had 65 percent of the possession and 72.4 percent of the completed passes, but each club had 7 goal attempts, and Genoa had more shots on goal (6 to 5). I'm used to shots blocked and total passes as statistics on Flash Score, but they are statistics for the Premier League but not Serie A. The clubs combining to have 11 of 14 attempts on target is a high percentage, but that just includes shots on goal and shots off goal, not blocked shots.

Genoa passed Torino to move up to 18th. Genoa ended their 12 game winless streak and got up to 10 points from 14 games. Spezia is the bottom safe club with 11 points, and Genoa has a good chance at winning the head-to-head tiebreaker when they have a win away. Spezia has 1 point from their last five games, which is the fewest. In 12 games in between Genoa's win to open the season and today, they had 4 draws and 8 losses. Combined with Manchester United's 2-0 Carabo Cup Quarterfinal win at Everton, two games at the same time were great for me.

Serie A resumes on Sunday January 3, and Genoa will host 8th place Lazio.

    Genoa 1-1 Lazio

Ciro Immobile scored a penalty kick in the 15th minute. Mattia Destro equalized in the 58th minute and got a yellow for what he did after, which I didn't see. Lazio dominated possession with 65 percent. Lazio had more goal attempts, 10 to 5, and more shots on goal, 4 to 3. Genoa caught Spezia, who lost, and fell behind Torino, who won. With 15 games played, Parma is 16th with 12 points. Genoa, Spezia, and Lazio are tied for 17th through 19th with 11, meaning that one would survive. Last place Crotone lost 6-2 at first place Inter, but Crotone has 9 points, so they are only 2 points behind safety. On Wednesday, Serie A has day games as if it was a weekend. Genoa goes to 5th place Sassuolo at 3:00 P.M. local/9:00 A.M. USA Eastern.

    Sassuolo 2-1 Genoa

Sassuolo took the lead, Genoa equalized, and Sassuolo scored the winning goal in the 83rd. Genoa is 19th with 11 points in 16 games. 17th (the last safe spot) and 18th have 12 points. To make the day worse, Spezia won 2-1 at Napoli to get up to 14 points.

On Saturday at 6:00 P.M. local/12:00 P.M. USA Eastern, Genoa hosts 12th place Bologna. After 11 games, Bologna had 4 wins and 7 losses. Since then, they have 5 consecutive draws, four of which were to clubs below them. Hopefully Genoa can win. If a club wants to survive, they need wins when hosting clubs in the bottom half.

    Genoa 2-0 Bologna

Miha Zajc scored in the 44th minute, which was his first goal in twelve games for Genoa. He scored on a rebound after a save. He's Slovenian. The first club outside Slovenia he played for was Empoli in Serie A, then Serie B, then Serie A. The he scored 3 goals in 20 games for Fenerbahce in Turkey. He's 26. Mattia Destro scored his sixth goal in the 55th minute. Genoa took the ball away from a defender who kept it too long and passed it to Destro for an open shot. His 6 goals lead Genoa and are 21st in Serie A. Bologna dominated possession with 66 percent, and they had 77 dangerous attacks to Genoa's 30. Bologna had more shots, 12 to 9, but Genoa had more shots on goal, 7 to 4.

It was Genoa's second win in four games and third win in seventeen games. Genoa has 14 points from 17 games and moved up to 17th, which is above the relegation zone. To finish the weekend above the relegation zone, 18th place Parma cannot win hosting 8th place Lazio. Parma has lost their last four games.

I ate Genoa Salami today. Salami is why I root for Genoa.

Juventus 3-2 Genoa (after extra time)

In the Coppa Italia Round of 16, Genoa got a hard draw. Juventus didn't start Cristiano Ronaldo, who entered in the 88th. Juventus scored in the 2nd and 23rd, but Genoa came back. 21-year-old defender Lennart-Marten Czyborra scored in the 28th to go down 2-1. Czyborra played for Heracles in the Eredivisie and 1 game for Atalanta before he went to Genoa. He's played for Germany's U-18 and U-20 teams. 21-year-old Filippo Melegoni equalized in the 74th minute, and it went to extra time. Hamza Rafia scored the winner in the 105th, meaning almost halftime of extra time. Juventus had 8 shots on goal in the first half, 1 in the second half, and 4 in 30 minutes of extra time. Shots were 22 to 10, shots on goal were 13 to 4, and Juventus had 61 percent of the possession. Even if Juventus didn't start several usual starters (I'm not checking to find out), scoring 2 goals at Juventus was a good effort, and having young players who aren't forwards be able to score goals is good. For both scorers, it was their first goal for Genoa.

Going to Serie A, I said that in order for Genoa to stay above the relegation zone, Parma couldn't beat Lazio, and Lazio won 2-0. On Sunday at 6:00 P.M. local/12:00 P.M. USA Eastern, Genoa is at 5th place Atalanta. Atalanta is in great form with 13 points from their last 5 games, and their last three games in reverse chronological order were 4-1, 3-0, and 5-1. If Genoa loses and Torino and/or Parma wins, Genoa will drop to the relegation zone. Torino hosts 14th place Spezia, and Parma goes to 7th place Sassuolo.

    Atalanta 0-0 Genoa

Atalanta ended their streak of five consecutive games with multiple goals, and they got shut out for the third time in 17 games. Genoa is 16th, and 1 point above Cagliari who got their sixth consecutive loss. After winning 3 of 4 games, Cagliari has 4 draws and 7 losses in their last 11 games. Genoa hosts Cagliari on Sunday at 3:00 P.M. local/9:00 A.M. USA Eastern. If Genoa wins and Udinese doesn't win hosting Atalanta, Genoa will move up to 15th. The bottom clubs are packed, and Genoa is only 3 points above last. Spezia is 13th. They're 5 points behind 10th and 5 points above 19th.

    Genoa 1-0 Cagliari

Mattia Destro scored in the 10th minute. Cagliari dominated possession in the second half with 70 percent, and dangerous attacks were 60 to 9. Shots on goal were different from other statistics, as Cagliari had more in the first half (3 to 1), and Genoa had more in the second half (5 to 4). Having 5 shots on goal from only dangerous attacks is extremely rare. For the whole game, Cagliari had 59 percent of the possession, 61.9 percent of the shots (13 to 8), 53.8 percent of the shots on goal (7 to 6), 67.7 percent of the combined free kicks and corner kicks (21 to 10), 60.4 percent of the completed passes (494 to 324), 62.6 percent of the attacks (159 to 95), 71.1 percent of the dangerous attacks (91 to 37), and a higher percent of attacks that were dangerous (91/159 = 57.2 percent to 37/95 = 38.9 percent). Destro had Genoa's only yellow card, and Cagliari had 2. Genoa had more fouls, 11 to 6. There were no red cards or penalty kicks, and in between Cagliari's yellows in the 20th and 85th, over two-thirds of the game did not have any goals, penalties, or cards. In the 62nd minute, Goran Pandev replaced Destro.

Genoa remained in 16th. They have played half of their games with slightly under 1 point per game. They have 18 points from 19 games with 4 wins, 6 draws, and 9 losses. They score 1 goal per game and allowed 30 for a -11 differential, which is 16th. They are 4 points above the relegation zone, as Torino and Cagliari are tied with 14, with one of them in the relegation zone. Later today, 19th place Parma hosts 10th place Sampdoria. If Parma wins, they will have 16 points and move up 2 spots If Parma draws, there will be a three-way tie with 14 points. Italy uses head-to-head as the tiebreaker after all of the head-to-head games are played, and goal differential before that. Udinese is 14th, Spezia is 15th, and Genoa is 16th on goal differential. Genoa beat Spezia by 1, Udinese beat Genoa by 1, and Spezia beat Udinese by 2. Therefore if head-to-head was used now, Spezia would be 14th, Genoa would be 15th, and Udinese would be 16th.

Next Sunday at 3:00 P.M. local/9:00 A.M. USA Eastern, Genoa is at last place Crotone, who has 12 points. With a win, Genoa would get above 1 point per game. If Crotone wins, they could move up 3 spots and get out of the relegation zone. I would expect it to be rare to get from last to above the bottom three from one game in the second half of the season.
