Since I last posted, Genoa lost 2-1 at Juventus, lost 3-1 hosting Udinese, and played a scoreless draw at Napoli. They are tied with stadium-mates Sampdoria with 9 points, and the tiebreakers have them as the bottom safe club in 17th with Sampdoria in 18th.

FIFA wrote that Christian Kouame is playing for Cote d'Ivoire in the CAF Olympic Qualifiers from 8 through 22 November.

If Genoa wants to fight it, they can keep him from playing in those Olympic qualifying games as they are not FIFA sanctioned matches....

    Just saying....

Kouame got injured in the qualifiers. https://onefootball.com/en/news/gen...om-being-able-to-resign-pinamonti-en-28091736 is titled "Genoa Striker Christian Kouame’s Injury Could Prevent Inter From Being Able To Resign Pinamonti." With a 1-1 draw at SPAL yesterday, Genoa remained 18th and in the relegation zone by 1 point. They have 10 points from 13 games, SPAL has 9, and Brescia has 7 with a game in hand, which is hosting 14th place Sassuolo on 18 December. For the rest of the year, Genoa hosts Torino, hosts Ascoli in the Coppa Italia, goes to Lecce, hosts stadium-mates Sampdoria, and goes to Inter Milan.

Genoa lost 1-0 hosting Torino in Serie A and won 3-1 hosting Ascoli in the Coppa Italia Fourth Round. That gets them in the Round of 16, where the top eight clubs enter, and Genoa will go to Torino in January.

Genoa led 2-0 from a Goran Pandev goal in the 31st minute and a Domenico Criscito penalty kick in the 45+5th minute. Lecce's Filippo Falco scored in the 60th minute, Genoa's Kevin Agudelo got a second yellow in the 69th minute, and Lecce's Andrea Tabanelli equalized in the 70th minute. Pandev tried to get a penalty kick and got booked for diving in the 73rd minute, and got a second yellow in the 77th minute, at which point I expected Genoa to lose. They managed to defend while down two men to get a 2-2 draw. Genoa is in 18th with 11 points from 18 games, while Lecce is 14th. Getting a draw against a club above you is normally good, but Genoa needs wins to survive. Stadium-mate Sampdoria are 17th with 1 more point and a game in hand that will be today. 19th place SPAL hosts 20th place Brescia today, and SPAL will pass Genoa with a win. SPAL has 9 points, and Brescia has 7. SPAL has one game in hand over Genoa, and Brescia has two games in hand because they had a game postponed. If Brescia wins, SPAL will fall to last. Genoa hosts Sampdoria on Saturday. If SPAL doesn't win today and Genoa beats Sampdoria, Genoa will get out of the relegation zone next week.

Manolo Gabbiadini, who I remember from his time at Southampton, scored the only goal in the 85th minute as Sampdoria won 1-0. Each club had 1 shot on goal. Genoa is 19th and is in the relegation zone by 4 points behind 17th place Sampdoria. In the unlikely event that SPAL wins at AS Roma tomorrow, Genoa will be last. Sampdoria is on pace for 36 points. Given that the tiebreaker is head-to-head and Sampdoria won away, let's say Genoa needs 37 points to survive. They have 11 from 16 games, which is 0.69 per game. They need 26 from their last 22 games, which is 1.18 per game, or almost 0.5 per game more than what they have so far. Being 4 points behind may not sound like a lot, but being in the relegation by 4 points is significant because those clubs take a while to get 4 points even if the club(s) they need to pass don't get any points.

Goran Pandev scored in the 8th minute to win 2-1 hosting Udinese and get Genoa out of last. Udinese had much more possession, attacks, free kicks, and corner kicks, but Genoa had more shots on goal, 7 to 3. It was Genoa's third win in 18 games and gives them 14 points. The bottom eight are separated by 7 points.

After advancing two rounds, Genoa was just eliminated in the Coppa Italia Round of 16. The other seven Round of 16 games will be next week. I don't know why this game was played earlier. Genoa scored in the 14th minute, allowed a goal in the 23rd minute, did not take advantage of a second yellow for a Torino player in the 105+1st minute, and lost penalty kicks 5-3 at just after midnight local time. Torino scored every time, Genoa scored three, had one saved, and didn't get their last attempt because they were down two. Torino started in the Round of 16 because they were seventh this season, and they're ninth now, so they are an easy opponent from among the top eight last season.

I typed Udinese, but I see that I made a mistake and it was against Sassuolo. Last week Genoa lost 2-1 at ninth place Hellas Verona and remained in 18th. Every club has played half of the 38 games except for third place Lazio and Hellas Verona who have played 1 fewer. Genoa hosts fifth place AS Roma tomorrow at 6:00 P.M. local/12:00 P.M. USA Eastern. Genoa'a next four games also include going to fourth place Atalanta and hosting sixth place Cagliari.

https://www.fifa.com/mensolympic/news/five-european-rising-stars-to-watch is titled "Five European rising stars to watch" under the heading "Men's Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020." It says:

    "Ionut Radu

    Romania

Club: Genoa (on loan from Inter Milan) / Position: Goalkeeper / Age: 22

One of Romania’s heroes from the Under-21 campaign that sent them to their first Olympic Games in over half a century, Radu has been battling it out in Italy’s Serie A for the last 18 months. His performances last year did not go unnoticed back home, with him being named the ‘Nicolae Dobrin Romanian Player of the Year’ in December.

A goalkeeper with many an impressive save in his locker, he may well slip down the pecking order at Genoa as they fight relegation. But Inter – and a host of potential suitors – see plenty to rave about in the young stopper. He will be key if Romania plan to threaten the podium in Japan."

Genoa had 55 percent of the possession and got a penalty kick, but still played a scoreless draw at Fiorentina. Domenico Criscito's penalty kick in the 15th minute was saved. Each club had 6 shots on goal. Spal (-18), Genoa (-20), and Brescia (-20) are tied for last with 15 points and have close goal differentials. The tiebreaker is head-to-head, which you can't tell from the table. Those three clubs are 1 points behind Lecce, who has a game in hand which is at 11th place Verona tomorrow. This is Matchday 21.

Genoa got a 2-2 draw at Atalanta, who entered in fifth with the best goal differential. Atalanta had 10 shots on goal, and Genoa went down a man in the 82nd minute and got three yellows after that.

Genoa won 1-0 hosting Cagliari. It was their fourth win in 23 games. They're in 18th with 19 points, and trail Lecce by 3 to get out of the relegation zone.

Genoa won 3-0 at Bologna, who got red cards in the 34th and 89th minutes. It was Genoa's first away win in 13 games. Having played a majority of their games away is good because they have 8 home and 6 away games left. They remained in 18th in the relegation zone. They remained 3 points behind Lecce, who moved up to 16th with a 2-1 win hosting last place SPAL. Genoa has 1 point behind 17th place stadium-mate Sampdoria, who has a game in hand that is winnable hosting 14th place Fiorentina tomorrow. Genoa plays the first game hosting Lazio next Sunday, and Lazio is trying to win the title. Lazio is 1 point behind first place Inter and second place Juventus. If Lazio beats Inter tomorrow and Juventus doesn't win their next two, Lazio will go to Genoa trying to take first. However, that will be hard because Juventus' next two games are against the bottom two. Lazio and Inter would have had an easier time taking first if they played before Juventus next week. If Lazio wins the next three, they will lead after playing on Saturday 29 February. Juventus hosts Inter on Sunday 1 March, so Inter has two of their next three games against the other contenders. Juventus hosts Lazio in the fifth-to-last game on 25 or 26 April.

In their first game since 8 March, it was Genoa 1-4 Parma. Genoa trailed 3-0, and their goal was from a penalty kick after a handball. Genoa's largest margin of defeat this season was 4, which happened three times, including Parma 5-1 Genoa on 20 October that made Genoa fire their manager. Parma is in seventh, but if you take out their wins over Genoa, they have more losses than wins and a negative goal differential. Genoa has 6 wins, 7 draws, and 14 losses, which is 25 points in 27 games. Genoa is tied for 17th, which is the last survival spot. Genoa got a draw hosting Lecce, and they will play at Genoa. I don't know the list of tiebreakers, but I'm assuming that if head-to-head is split it would go to goal differential, which favors Genoa's -19 over Lecce's -25. SPAL is in 19th with 18 points, and Brescia is last with 17. In one game after resuming each, 17th through 19th lost, and Brescia got a draw at 13th place Fiorentina. SPAL and Brescia don't have much hope of surviving, and 14th place Torino is safe by 6 points. It looks like Udinese (15th with 28), Sampdoria (16th with 26), Genoa (17th with 25), and Lecce (17th with 25) will battle with one of them being relegated. They have 27 games and 11 left except for Sampdoria, who has a game in hand that will be today at fifth place AS Roma.

Serie A has clubs play two games every week for six weeks and will end on Saturday 1 August. Here are Genoa's last 11 games:

    At 20th place Brescia
    Host 1st place Juventus
    At 15th place Udinese
    Host 6th place Napoli
    Host 19th place SPAL
    At 14th place Torino
    Host 18th place Lecce
At 16th place Sampdoria (who they share their stadium with)
    Host 3rd place Inter
    At 12th place Sassuolo
    Host 9th place Hellas Verona

That's 6 out of 11 at home, and 7 of 11 against the bottom half, and because clubs don't play themselves the bottom half will have 20 games against the top half and 18 games against the bottom half. They play the bottom six club other than themselves with 4 of them away. Beating the three clubs below them would be 9 points, and getting draws at 14th through 16th would be 3. That's 12 without including mid-table games against 9th and 12th. I'm not saying any points are guaranteed for Genoa, but at least 12 points in 11 games would be a higher rate than they have so far, and would probably be enough to survive. I wonder if they will have deja vu and survive on a tiebreaker like last season.

Genoa allowed goals in the 10th and 13th minutes to trail 2-0 at last place Brescia before scoring two penalty kicks for a 2-2 draw. Genoa is in the bottom survival spot in 17th, and they're 1 point above Lecce, who lost 4-0 at Juventus. Genoa trails stadium-mate Sampdoria on the head-to-head tiebreaker with the second game at Sampdoria on 22 July. Sampdoria has a game in hand, which is hosting 11th place Bologna, and it starts in about 40 minutes. Genoa is 2 points behind 15th place Udinese, who plays hosting Atalanta at the same time as Sampdoria hosts Bologna.

Today's was Genoa's 32nd game, and it was their fourth game since my last post. Here are their results with each opponent's current position:

    30 June: Genoa 1-3 Juventus (1st)
    5 July: Udinese (13th) 2-2 Genoa
    8 July: Genoa 1-2 Napoli (6th)
    12 July: Genoa 2-0 SPAL (20th)

Genoa is half done with their 12 games after the break. Before today, their Form (last 5 games) had only 2 points, albeit the scores were okay against Juventus and Napoli. Today was Genoa's first win since a 2-1 win at AC Milan in their games before the break on 8 March. Genoa moved 11 points SPAL, who could clinch relegation next weekend. The only suspense is if SPAL (19 points) or Brescia (21 points) finishes last. Lecce lost 6 consecutive games, with 1 before the break and 5 after, that they ended with a 2-1 win hosting second place Lazio, which moved Genoa into the relegation zone by 1 point. With their win today, Genoa moved 2 points above Lecce at Cagliari. In Genoa's win hosting SPAL, Genoa has 59 percent of the possession, and did even better in shots on goal at 9 to 0. Genoa had a penalty kick saved, but won easily anyway. Lecce played a scoreless draw at 11th place Cagliari to move 1 point behind 17th place Genoa with 6 games left.

    Torino 3-0 Genoa

At halftime, Torino led 1-0, Torino had more shots on goal (3 to 2), and Torino had 54 percent of the possession. Each club committed 11 fouls in the first half, and the clubs may not like each other as the five head-to-head games before yesterday combined for four red cards. Genoa had three shots saved in the 46th minute, which doesn't match Flash Score giving them only 2 shots on goal in the second half and 4 in the game. The second goal was when Sasa Lukic scored his first of the season and third career Serie A goal into a top corner from outside the box. The last goal was also from outside the box, and it was scored by Andrea Belotti, who assisted on Lukic's goal. Goran Pandev was subbed on the 59th minute, and rather than scoring for Genoa, his backpass gave the ball for Belotti to score, which was also from outside the box. Genoa had 66 percent of the second half possession to give them 57 for the game according to Flash Score, but Flash Score gave them 48 percent in the first half and TV gave them 46 percent. All clubs have five games left, and Torino moved 8 points above the relegation zone, so they should be safe, and Udinese is 1 point behind them. The question is which of Genoa, who has 30 points, and Lecce, which has 29 points, will survive. Genoa hosts Lecce on Sunday at 1:30 P.M. USA Eastern, and not winning would be bad. After that, the fixtures and opponent's positions are:

22 July: Sampdoria (14th with 38) vs. Genoa (on ESPN in USA) and Lecce vs. Brescia (19th with 21) at the same time
25 July: Genoa vs. Inter (2nd with 71); 26 July: Bologna (10th with 43) vs. Lecce
29 July: Sassuolo (8th with 47) vs. Genoa and Udinese (16th with 36) vs. Lecce at the same time
2 August: Genoa vs. Verona (9th with 44) and Lecce vs. Parma (12th with 40) when all games are at 9:00 A.M. USA Eastern, which is 3:00 P.M. local

Genoa's opponents have an average position of 8.25 with exactly 50 points. Lecce's opponents have an average position of 14.25 with exactly 35 points.

Genoa played a 2-2 draw at Lecce. Wikipedia cites Serie A and says that the tiebreakers are head-to-head points, head-to-head goal differential, goal differential, goals scored, and a random draw. I was thinking that it could be bad that head-to-head away goals is not a tiebreaker because if Genoa wins 0-0 or 1-1 at home the head-to-head points and goals would be tied with Genoa having more head-to-head away goals. However, Genoa's -23 goal differential is so much better than Lecce's -33 that if the clubs are tied, Genoa will have the better goal differential, so Genoa will win the tiebreaker with a win or draw on Sunday. If there is a draw, Lecce would need to gain at least 2 points on Genoa, but that could happen, and arguably Lecce should be expected to gain that much given the remaining schedule. If Genoa wins, Lecce would need to gain 5 points on Genoa, which is possible but unlikely. If Genoa wins, and then Sampdoria beats Genoa and Lecce beats Brescia, Genoa's lead would be back down to 1 point and the tiebreaker with 3 games left, including Genoa facing Inter and two other top half clubs. Including their game against 17th place Genoa, Lecce's last five opponents have an average position of 14.8 with exactly 34 points, and it's really unusual to have that easy a schedule in a span of five games.

I have two big games at the same time on Sunday, as Genoa's start of 1:30 P.M. USA Eastern is half an hour after Man United starts their FA Cup Semifinal against Chelsea.

Genoa leads Lecce 1-0 at halftime thanks to Antonio Sanabria's goal in the 7th minute. The end of the half was eventful. Lecce got a yellow card, and the announcer didn't know why he was angry until replay showed that Genoa's Number 8 got away with an obscene finger gesture. I looked at who it was, and it was Lukas Lerager, who got a yellow card in the 15th minute, so if he would have been been ejected for a yellow or straight red. Genoa did get a red card, but it was to a staff member or bench player that didn't make them go down a man, and Flash Score didn't say who it was. VAR gave Lecce a penalty kick after goalkeeper Perin came out of the goal and tripped a player with his momentum. The attacker didn't have the ball then, so it wasn't denying a goal scoring opportunity. In the previous game, the announcer said that Perin doesn't come out of his goal enough. The announcer said that Lecce's Marco Mancosu had only missed 1 penalty kick, but the miss was recently against Lazio. I checked, that was 3 games ago, and Lecce won that game 2-1. Saying only one miss isn't enough information without saying how many makes. He has 8 makes, so he's made 8 of 10, and he has 11 goals, so he has only 3 that weren't penalties. His miss against Lazio was by shooting over the goal, and today he shot way over the goal. That was in the 45+2nd minute. There was 6:10 of stoppage time, which was long enough for back and forth action with corner kicks for Lecce, Genoa, and Lecce again.

Anyone in the USA who pays for ESPN Plus can watch at https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/fa43c4ed-6371-44fd-b89d-5676f0fcc683

In a game between the bottom two, SPAL leads 1-0 at Brescia. That would make SPAL have 22 and Brescia fall to last with 21. If Genoa holds on and Brescia loses, Brescia will be the first club to clinch relegation because they will be 12 points behind Genoa has 4 games left and Genoa has the tiebreaker with a head-to-head win and draw. If Genoa wins and Brescia wins or draws, SPAL will remaining in last and clinch relegation.

As I type, the second half is in progress, and Lecce's Mancosu, who shot a penalty kick over, scored in the 60th minute from outside the box to make it 1-1. The announcer said Genoa defender Cristian Romero should have headed the ball clear. Soon after, he got a yellow, and the announcer said that he isn't one of the players who will be suspended if he gets one yellow. Genoa's next game is at stadium-mate Sampdoria.

In the 81st minute, Genoa shot off the goalpost, off the shoulder of goalkeeper Gabriel on the ground, and in for an own goal to win 2-1. It wasn't impressive, and if Lerager had been ejected in first half stoppage time they probably wouldn't have won. Other than shots on goal, which Genoa led 5 to 2, statistics were close or were significantly better for Lecce.

After having VAR call offside to take away a possible game-winning goal, Jaromir Zmrhal (I wonder if I've ever seen "zmrh" in a name before that) scored in the 90+3rd minute to give Brescia a 2-1 win over SPAL to move 5 points above SPAL, who clinched relegation. A 90+5th minute winner for Napoli gave them a 2-1 win hosting Udinese. Genoa are within 3 points of Udinese, but Udinese has the tiebreaker. Udinese is 7 points above Lecce and is close to safe. In the bottom four, Genoa has 33, Lecce has 29, Brescia has a tiny chance at survival with 24, and SPAL has 19. Genoa could average under 1 point per game and survive. Brescia goes to Lecce on Wednesday. Brescia won 3-0 hosting Lecce, so if Brescia wins they will be 2 points behind Lecce and have the tiebreaker, but Brescia also needs to pass Genoa, who has the tiebreaker over Brescia. As I posted on Friday, Lecce has a much easier last four games than Genoa. Brescia also has an easy last four games. The only good club they face is slumping Lazio, who has 1 point in their last 4 games that will become 1 point in 5 games if they lose at Juventus tomorrow. After going to Lecce, Brescia hosts 14th place Parma, goes to 4th place Lazio, and hosts 13th place Sampdoria. If Brescia gains at least 7 points on Genoa in the next 3 games, Genoa could want help from Sampdoria on the last matchday. Since Lecce is 5 points above Brescia and both have easy schedules, I'm rooting for Brescia to win at Lecce so Genoa will be at least 4 points above Brescia with 3 games left.

Genoa scored, allowed a goal, and scored for a 2-1 win at stadium-mate Sampdoria. Sampdoria had better statistics. Genoa remained 4 points ahead of Lecce, who won 3-1 hosting Brescia. Brescia is 12 points behind Genoa with 3 games left, so Brescia is the second club to clinch relegation. Genoa tied Udinese with 36 points and got above 1 point per game. Udinese has a game in hand, which is hosting Juventus, and Juventus will clinch the title if they win. That would give Juventus a 9 point lead, and they would clinch because they have the head-to-head tiebreaker over Atalanta. Udinese has a win and a draw over Genoa for the head-to-head tiebreaker, so they are 16th and can't fall behind Genoa until Genoa plays.

Up next is Genoa hosting third place Inter on Saturday at 7:30 P.M. local/1:30 P.M. USA Eastern and 12th place Bologna hosting Lecce on Sunday at 5:15 P.M. local/11:15 A.M. USA Eastern.

I like Manchester United, and former Manchester United players scored all the goals, with Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, and Lukaku. Lecce is at Bologna tomorrow at 5:15 P.M. local, which is 11:15 A.M. USA Eastern. Genoa leads by 4 points and the head-to-head tiebreaker, and Lecce has a game in hand. After tomorrow, both clubs will play on Thursday and end next Sunday.

Genoa lost 3-0 to Inter Milan. Bologna scored all their goals at the beginning and end. They scored in the 2nd and 5th minutes, and Lecce tied it. Then Bologna scored in the 90+3rd minute to win 3-2 and keep Lecce 4 points behind Genoa with 2 games left. Since Genoa has the tiebreaker, Lecce must gain 5 or 6 points on Genoa, which means Lecce must win both while Genoa gets 0 or 1 point.

Wednesday 29 July: Sassuolo (8th with 48) vs. Genoa and Udinese (13th with 42) vs. Lecce at 1:30 P.M. USA Eastern, which is 7:30 P.M. local
Sunday 2 August: Genoa vs. Verona (9th with 46) and Lecce vs. Parma (11th with 46) when all games are at 9:00 A.M. USA Eastern, which is 3:00 P.M. local

If Lecce doesn't win or if Genoa and Lecce win, Genoa will clinch survival on Wednesday, and I would have to think about their survival during a long car trip on Sunday.

Genoa lost 5-0 at Sassuolo. Sassuolo had 55 percent of the possession and more shots on goal, 9 to 3. I wondered if Genoa could clinch safety while losing 5-0, but they didn't. Gianluca Lapadula scored in the 81st minute to give Lecce a 2-1 win at Udinese. He's scored 10 goals in 24 games for Lecce after scoring 7 in 36 games for Genoa in the previous two seasons. That only includes Serie A. Genoa has 36 points and has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Lecce, who has 35 points. Lecce survives if they win and Genoa doesn't. In the realistic scenario that Genoa loses and Lecce draws, Genoa would survive on head-to-head for the second consecutive season. Genoa hosts Verona, who is ninth with 49 points. Lecce hosts Parma, who is eleventh with 46 points. Verona's goal differential is 1 better than Parma's, so points and goal differential agree that Verona is slightly better than Parma. 12 days ago I typed that all the clubs would end on Sunday at 3:00 P.M. local, which is 9:00 A.M. USA Eastern, but that won't happen. On Saturday and Sunday there will be one game at 6:00 P.M. local/12:00 P.M. USA Eastern and four games at 8:45 P.M. local/2:45 P.M. USA Eastern. Genoa will have their last game on the same day of the week at the same time as last season. The Champions League and Europa League spots will be decided on Saturday at 8:45 P.M. local/2:45 P.M. USA Eastern.

Genoa won 3-0. They got an ejection for a second yellow in the 62nd minute, but neither club scored after that. Parma won 4-3 at Lecce, so Genoa survived by 4 points. Genoa's win gave them 10 wins, so they reached double-digits, and 39 points, so they exceeded 1 point per game.

Hopefully next season they will improve and survive easily, and hopefully this forum gets another Genoa fan.

Next week Genoa starts by hosting Crotone, who was second in Serie B last season to get promoted. Then Genoa goes to Napoli, who was seventh last season.
