Because it is outdated. Travel is easier and pitches are more consistent. So playing away isn’t as daunting as it once was. Add in the fact of the penalty for away goals counting more in extra time, it is time to get rid of the rule.

I thought the main reason for away goals counting double was to encourage teams to attack more. Back then the tendency was for the away team to sit back, pack the defense and get a draw. Then hope to win at home but it really made for dull defensive style of football.

But with away goals counting double there was that incentive to attack away from home rather than defend as those goals could be a definite bonus.

It kind of gives an unfair advantage to the away side in the 2nd leg.

There's plenty to debate but we should really just drop the 2 leg format for a single match. Maybe that's what we change the CL to, a bigger "league" format before Christmas and then a knockout tournament after the holidays based on how you stacked up in the "league."

but in many cases, the home side in the first leg is afraid to open up and give up an away goal. So it has the opposite effect as intended.

Also, ask yourself why teams didn’t attack when they were away? Travel 60 years ago wasn’t anywhere as easy as it is now.

Yep , travel was a bit slower back then but I really don't see that being a factor in the away goal rule. I do think playing at home was more of an advantage though due to the shocking conditions of many pitches back then which the home team would obviously be more used to.
Nowadays most pitches playing surfaces are pristine even through the worst winter months allowing both sides to play good football.
I agree Uefa believe the rule is no longer working as intended and prefer to decide tied games with pk's instead.

IIRC speke is correct - the away goal rule was introduced to stop away teams from parking the bus for 90 minutes.

but there's a grain of truth in the travel point as well I think.
in those days travel was hard on the players compared to today, but a bigger issue is there were very very few fans travelling abroad years back - so the away team were at more of a disadvantage and getting a goal was seen as more of an accomplishment. dunno if that was part of the UEFA thinking, though.

Respectfully disagree. I don't want to see a parked bus from every opponent who comes to Anfield.

yeah I agree. I think this is going to backfire and lead to a lot of boring games. Especially if you are a small fry against a big favorite. You now have every incentive to park the bus and hope to get to penalties and make it a 50-50 game.

A Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of child sex offences.

The 31-year-old man, who has not been named for legal reasons, was detained on Friday by Greater Manchester Police.

In a statement, the player's club confirmed he had been suspended and added it would "continue supporting the authorities with inquiries and would not be commenting further".

The footballer has since been bailed pending further inquiries.

    guardian:
Everton released the following statement on Monday night but declined to confirm whether it was the same player who had been arrested on suspicion of child sex offences.

The statement read: “Everton can confirm it has suspended a first-team player pending a police investigation. The club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time.”

Coronavirus vaccine passports are to be introduced at football matches from October – potentially putting hundreds of thousands of Premier League fans at risk of being refused entry to stadiums, reports suggest.

Ministers are thought to be in the process of finalising plans to make double vaccination status a mandatory requirement for supporters attending matches, according to both the Daily Telegraph and the Mirror, as part of the drive to keep the country moving in the run-up to Christmas.

well this is interesting .... I wonder if in future players will wear padded headbands or something?

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/57996593
Professional footballers in England are to be limited to 10 "higher force headers" a week in training under new guidelines for the upcoming season.

It comes after recent "multiple studies" were conducted into concerns about the long-term dangers of heading. In 2019, a study found professional footballers were more likely to suffer from neurodegenerative brain disease.

Guidance for amateurs is "10 headers per session and only one session a week where heading practice is included".
