On the dual national discussion, I think in the long-term, it is not sustainable, mostly because it is unfair to players on the bubble. Like for instance El Khannous represented Belgium throughout the young ranks and only made the switch to Morocco at the U20 level. This means that from the U15 up to the U18 level he started in the AM role for the Belgian youth teams. Had he chosen Morocco earlier, another kid would have gotten to experience those games. I can understand a player feeling loyalty to two countries, but leaving the choice so late means that you can essentially render international youth football useless in terms of preparing your players for the senior team.

 

We might beat France in 2018 if we fired Sampa after losing to Croatia & then Scaloni takes over.

Maybe good we didn't do that because I don't think we win that cup regardless with the players picked, and that might have convinced them to move on from Scaloni prematurely.

 

FIFA should at least have some kind of requirement for how many players on a national team were actually born in the country. Sure, it would probably hurt some of the smaller island nations like Curacao, but it’s a bit ridiculous when you can field almost an entire team from the diaspora and still call it a national team. I think I read that 10 of Morocco’s 11 starters were born outside of Morocco. As the Dutchman pointed out, that Morocco did not create these players, the French, Belgian, Dutch and other European did. They just have heritage. I’ve even mentioned that we need to hit the brakes on some of these Euro-Pibes.

 

Yeah maybe a limit on how many of those players would be better than trying to come up with some kind of rubric that makes sense for every case. USA has used dual nationals developed abroad a fair amount but it's never been more than a couple or so, and they are guys that really embrace the shirt and being American once they're in. They've also lost guys that played up through the youth ranks and only at the end get attention from another country and that's pretty annoying. I don't think it's too bad a thing to have a couple guys to fill in the gaps or give you a star player, but when it's the entire team it feels kind of meaningless.

 

Listening to the Fox Sports broadcasters say that Cabo Verde have to open up and risk it because playing defensively isn't modern. I mean, after some time listening to these teleprompter reading dummies gets really tiring. Sure, just open up to Spain and let them run ragged against you. I'm not going to give any energy one way or another but to say that Cabo Verde is doing what they need to at the moment, and it's only 17 minutes in.

Spain vs low block defending has always been the worst WC match. They still lack proper finisher .

They looked vulnurable on counter as expected. Team like Brazil would absolutely kill them on counter.

The problem for Spain is Cape Verde clearly would still bunker unless they conceided one. Their aim is simply to avoid big margin losses. If they're not carefull, it could be ended with a silly upset.

Out of curiosity I was looking at the Verde players, where they were born and where they play. 10 of the 26 players were born in Cabo Verde, 7 in Holland, 5 Portugal, 3 France. I guess this is the way it's going to go with Fifa wanting to make the game truly global, allowing teams to take the majority of their players on heritage who have been born and trained in European countries.

That's the whole reason why I tune out the pundits. It's a very very old meme. You play well in both ends, not just one. If pundits and fans can't work their minds around this, it's their problem. Fans are mostly there to drink beer and yell, so it's expected.
