Yes, it's sad. But you know what's really sad? Last year DCU sucked so bad that he probably still would have improved the team...

That won't be the case this year!

Ah, but can you play your flute standing on only one leg?

Huh? A hepatologist deals with diseases of the liver, alcohol as well as less self-induced problems.

Of course, but it's still a biological process, as opposed to say.. domestic violence. Gazza's wife is not too happy about missing those checks;)

I know you guys don't mean any harm, but it's really not at all funny. Gazza has some serious problems, and I don't think it does any good to make light of them. Thinking he had put a lot of these issues behind him, I was tossing the bon mots out last summer, but now that I know he is anything but healthy, I just feel sorry for the guy.

I feel really badly for Gazza. There's NOTHING funny about his problems.

Depression is not a joking matter, and drinking as a form of self-medication just adds to the danger. Gazza apparently knows he needs help, and checking himself in to the clinic is a good start. But he needs more than that - perhaps a "posse" that will help to protect him from his weaknesses. Depression can be regulated by drugs. He needs to see a psychopharmacologist ASAP. If he can moderate his mood swings, perhaps alcohol won't be so necessary.

Sorry to go on so but I have family experience with these matters.

I hate to see anyone succumb to the secondary effects of alcoholism. That said, it's all on Gazza at this point. Treating depression is a hell of alot easier than sustaining recovery from alcoholism.
Personally, I hope he grabs a Big Book, a 12 & 12 and a good sponsor, and gets his act together.
Statistically, however, it isn't a pretty picture.
One Day At a Time, Gazzer!

Humor and sadness are not mutually exclusive. Some of the moast depressing events need humor(such as the current political circumstances).
However, if if anyone was offended by my posts, I appologize. As noted in the first post, Gazza's life circumstances are sad, and I wish him the best, and hope he's back to smiling and enjoying himself again.

I too apologise for any offense. I would also say that these boards are rife with alcohol induced escapades and tales with frequent offers of the brotherly lifting of a pint. Before we become too sanctimonious, we might consider the role models that we are to our children and younger posters-some of whom may be susceptible to the disease of alcoholism.

A lot of you know me personally so I have no problem posthing this to this thread. I can honestly say giving up alcohol is perhaps one of the hardest things in my life I have ever done or will do. I know a lot of friends and people who have tried and failed in their attempts to give up drinking. Some of them have lost careers, savings, family and their life.

I mean it when I say I hope Gazza can get his life together. Giving up alcohol (and drugs) was very difficult for me and I am not under the spotlight that Gazza is. I can only imagine what this guy and his family is going through. A couple people pointed out Gazza needs a sponsor or two to guide him and I can honestly say that is the truth. There were three people in my life who I would call on a daily basis to talk with early on in my sobriety and I carry friendships with them to this day. Two of them were included in my wedding this past September.

I pray for those suffering addiction on a daily basis and while I don't know Gazza personally, I'll keep him in my thoughts and will wish him all the best as he struggles to beat this addiction. It took me a long time but I am comfortable being around situations where alcohol is served ie: headed to a restaurant to watch a game and I don't even think about drinking anymore. Ironic that I post this on the 14th anniversary of my last drink 2/19/89.

    Thank you.

this post is sorta outta the blue..but...

tonight on the news here in Italy, they showed a brief clip of Gazza playing in his first match for his new team in China...He had a HAT TRICK...

I guess his little stint in rehab did him some good...
