Heard through the grapevine that SC lost some players this spring to transferring, returning to Europe, and quitting. Hey JBinSC, got any info?
I don't know anything about transfers but SC was going to be a young team anyway and they already weren't bringing back much scoring. Here is what was supposed to come back, before these rumored defections. Josh Alcala Defender FR Buda, Texas (Hays) 18 games, 13 starts - 1 goal, 1 assist Geoffrey Anatole Goalkeeper FR Sharon, Mass. (Beaver Country Day) DNP Jack Cummings Midfielder JR Cincinnati, Ohio (Summit Country Day) 20 games, 20 starts - 2 goals, 2 assists J. C. Desriac Forward SO Plumaudan, France (Univ. of Rennes 1) 15 games, 5 starts - 1 goal, 4 assists Ryan Deter Foward FR Raleigh, N.C. (Leesville Road) 20 games, 8 starts - 5 goals, 1 assist Willis Forko Midfielder FR Houston, Texas (Cypress Springs) 20 games, 16 starts - 0 goals, 1 assist Dane Johnson Midfielder JR Brooklyn, N.Y. 3 games, 0 starts - 0 goals, 0 assists Zac Jordan Goalkeeper RS JR Charlotte, N.C. (Providence Day) DNP Ben Link Foward FR Midland, Ga (Brookstone) 18 games, 0 starts - 0 goals, 1 assist Greg Reece Defender FR Clemmons, N.C. (West Forsyth) 7 games, 2 assists - 0 goals, 0 assists Robert Rosenberg Defender JR Dallas, Texas (Plano) 19 games, 19 starts - 2 goals, 4 assists Udo Seidel MidFielder SO Prospect Heights, Ill. (John Hersey) 9 games, 3 starts - 0 goals, 0 assists Jordan Smith Defender JR Arlington Heights, Ill. (Buffalo Grove) 20 games, 20 starts - 0 goals, 1 assist Anthony Stovall Forward SO Columbia, S.C. (Ridgeview) 20 games, 14 starts - 4 goals, 1 assist Eric Szeszycki Defender FR Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock) 16 games, 7 starts - 0 goals, 0 assists Lawson Vaughn Midfielder FR Marietta, Ga. (Lassiter) 16 games, 16 starts - 0 goals, 1 assist If they lose 2-3 players from this group, they could be really hurting for experience.
luvda, i will claim to not know a whole lot about south carolina. what i do know is that they lost a lot of good players/leaders from last season. I don't know anything about transfers, but i do know that they have a relatively solid recruiting class. their recruits are not highly touted or superstars, but i think that they will be very good in a supporting role. there is one kid, guzan, who i think is/was on the U-17 or 18s, and then they have a couple region III players. i think that south carolina will be in a tough position this year. especially with the rest of the state improving (furman and clemson have been pretty strong recently and now coastal, winthrop, and cofc are getting better), they will be in for some tough matches in 2003.
From what I understand, Desriac has left and returned to France. And Forko is transferring to UCONN. SC's assistant coach, Paul McDonough, left and went to UCONN and Forko is following him there. I also heard Berson didn't release him, making him sit out a year. I think there may be one or two others leaving as well.
Gamecocks! Luvdabears, This isn't basketball or football. Why wouldn't Coach Berson release a player that wanted to leave. It doesn't make sense. Who else may be leaving?
Don't know why Berson wouldn't release him...but it could be that the kid told him late this spring and he doesn't have a chance to recruit anyone now because it's so late. Then again, who knows what these coaches think?
