I've been to some good games, Roberto Baggio driving a stake through every Italian heart in '94, France getting it done in 98' etc. But the one game I wished I was at is when Gazza took that Free Kick, and had his placed reserved in History. I downloaded that clip, and every time I see it, I get chills up my spine. What game do you wish you were at?
1960 European Cup Final - 140,000+ in Hampden Park to see Real Madrid 7 Eintracht Franfurt 3. The zenith of the legendary Madrid side - Puskas scores 4, Di Stefano 3 - Frankfurt had beaten Rangers (who at the time were a superb team) 12-4 on aggregate in the semis, and were no sub-standard team. A close second would be the 1962 final - despite Puskas scoring his second European Cup final hat-trick, a young upstart called Eusebio steals the show as Benfica win 5-3. Eusebio, Puskas, Gento and Di Stefano on the same field, there has been no assembly of greater players in the same match at club level.
My pick is in line with your thoughts ...... October 11th, 1962 The Stadium of Light, Lisbon, Portugal 2nd leg of International Club Championship Eusebio's EC Champion BENFICA vs. Pele's Libertadores Champion SANTOS After Santos won the first leg at the Maracana by a narrow margin - Santos 3 (Pele 2X, Coutinho), Benfica 2 (Santana 2X) - Benfica felt confident they could revert the deficit in front of their 75,000 fans. The Stadium of Light game is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever exhibitions of the beautiful game. That night's score..... Santos 5 (Pele 3X, Coutinho, Pepe), Benfica 2 (Eusebio, Santana). I'm lucky to have seen a game compact....just incredible. If anyone has the whole game I'd love to trade them for it.
For sheer atmosphere, I would have loved to have been at the Euro '96 semi-final match between England and Germany. What a game! What pace! What intensity! That was one of the most memorable matches I've ever seen and it would have been amazing to have been seated in Wembley to witness it. BTW, Germany won on PK's...
A small time match wen compared to the others in this thread, but one I'd lke to have seen just the same: 1974 NCAA Div. I Finals- Howard University 2-1 St. Louis Others: Either of the Alabama A&M University (my Alma Mater) Div II NCAA championship wins. 1977 and 1979. Possibly the Div. I final loss to UConn in 1981.
I believe I was at that game. Double Overtime? In St. Louis? Don't ask me if I remember any of it. My dad took me to all of the championship games played in St. Louis post 1973 or 4. They all run together at this point I would have liked to have been at USA-England in 1950.
I'm not a Man U fan, but that 1998(?) Champions League final in the Nou Camp against Munich would have been unbelievable to be at. Also, in 96 or 97, Liverpoole-Newcastle when Asprilla scored a couple of brilliant goals to put them up, but the Reds came back and Robbie Fowler scored in stoppage time to win. Both games almost gave me a heart attack!!
You'd probably remember this game, unless you were very young. Howard (in Washington, DC) was made up of Black players, wearing all blue or all white. Most likely all African or Caribbean, if you were close enough to hear them. Yeah, I think it was 2OT. Alabama A&M was ranked in the top three from 1980-1984 or so. The 1977 Div. II title was our first season of full NCAA competition. We (they- I wasn't anywhere near good enough to make that team, plus I was still in high school then)have the distinction of playing in what had to be one of the first nationally televised colleigate regular season matches (v. cross-town whipping post University of Alabama-Huntsville) in 1980.
1. MLS Cup 97. DC beats Colorado in front of 57,000 delirious DC fans. 2. Real Madrid vs. FC Barcelona in the 99 (?) season. I don't remember much about it except it was quite a game and Roberto Carlos got ejected for a flying two footed tackle. I can't think of many now. I'll come back when I my head is cleared.
top 3 choices HOLLAND 2 argentina 1 - WC98 AJAX 2 milan 1 - champions league final 95 USA 2 mexico 0 - WC2002
Stupid American I wish I'd been at England 4-1 Holland in Euro 96 to see the Dutch taken apart by Shearer and Sheringham.
'68 European Cup Final with Manchester United beating Benfica in extra time. The epic FA Cup semi-final replay when Viera passed the ball to Giggsy. And lastly, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put the ball in the German net. Manchester United 2 - 1 Bayern Munich
I'd actually rather have been at the Manchester United-Arsenal '99 FA Cup semifinal replay (the Giggsy Game) than the European CL final vs. Bayern later that year. I wouldn't have minded being at either of the 3-3 games vs. Barcelona in the group phase that year. In terms of historical games where I have no vested interest, I think I'd have like to have been at the Hungary-England friendly at Wembley where the magnificent Magyars announced their presence with authority.
Funny, I wish I was at the same match in 88 to witness Van Basten's hat-trick. Actually, I wish I was at all the Dutch games that year just to see The Man in his prime.
My high school Spanish teacher was on that championship Howard team. He once showed us clippings from Ebony or Jet magazine.
Liverpool V. Everton at Goodison Park in the Treble season when Gary McAllister scored off a freekick from 35-40 yards out in stoppage time to win it.
Oh, and when the Cowboys beat the Redskins 3 or four seasons ago by scoring 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter and one in overtime. Best football game I've ever seen.
