Who: Houston Dynamo (11-6-8 MLS) @ CD FAS (2-2-2 APERTURA) When: Wednesday, August 22 9:00 PM CST TV: Fox Soccer Channel The Houston Dynamo open CONCACAF Champions League Wednesday in El Salvador against CD FAS. FAS is played their opening game in the 2012-2013 CCF and were defeated by Olimpia from Honduras 3-0 in Honduras. FAS has played six games in the Apertura, scoring six goals and giving up five on the season and are the fifth best team in El Salvador early on. I would think that Kinnear and the Dynamo would pinpoint this as a MUST WIN game if the Dynamo are to have any hopes of beating out Olimpia for the right to advance to the knockout rounds in March. I expect a mix of starters and reserves to travel to FAS to get the win with Toronto FC looming at BBVA Saturday. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE THE 1ST DYNAMO WIN OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA.
this will be our 3rd game in El Salvador: 0W-1T-1L 08/09 CCL: Firpo 1 - 1 Dynamo (Stu Holden) 09/10 CCL: Isidro Metapan 3 - 2 (G. Cameron, Tally Hall) the good news is this game was moved to the capital. so the Dynamo can probably fly direct from Houston. instead of flying in and then getting on a bus for a couple of hours to FAS' home stadium.
I was explaining this to a Eurosnob a while back about UEFA CL vs. CCL. What other regional international cup do you have Keeper score, play in a remote rainforest hours from the nearest airport on a pitch than has a grade down to one end, and in a country where half the country with the stadium included in it lose power in the middle of match? You can keep UEFA-this crap is way to mesmerizing to pass up.
My guess at the line-up for Wednesday: -----------Ching----------Weaver----------- -----------------Camargo-------------------- C. Clark------------------------------Watson ---------------------Rico---------------------- Craevelle----Taylor---Boswell-----Hainault -------------------Deric-----------------------
I would anticipate we will see Sturgis starting. Somewhere. Plus I think you have to start Sarkodie here. He was absolutely amazing in preseason and I think he will help us down the stretch.
yeah i'm one of those that pre-dates satellite television. back in the 70s and through the mid to late 90s we didn't have access to all those UEFA games. so we made due with what we had. that's why i love pushing CONCACAF on young impressionable youth. against modern football and fans-by-television. support your local club and region.
Clark for sure, he's actually been down there before. He might get the armband iffin' Ching and or Davis don't start. Boni needs some rest but his experience in years with Olimpia could be a great shot in the arm. Sturgis most likely will pair with Taylor. Would really like to see our ebony with two ivory man line up of Camargo, Craevelle, Boni, Watson, Kofi, Dixon, Carr, Taylor, Rico, Sturgis and of course Tyler "The Stun Gun" Deric or The Wall. Dixon Carr Boni Camargo Watson Rico Craevelle Taylor Sturgis Kofi TD
FAS' stadium not CONCACAF worthy so they'll play an hour away in Cuscatlan (Alianza FC's home ground and where Salvador NT play). I'll call a boring draw as with every FAS "home" game in this competition last year 0-0, 1-1, 0-0 before Olimpia whooped them 4-1 very good defensive club. #1 in last year's apertura, #4 in clausura, #2 so far in new season in El Salvador. call it 1-1
So - to rehash this topic. I'm figuring two draws on the road is better than one win and one loss. Obviously, a win and a draw is better yet. The point is whether it really is must win or not. I'm thinking not. Road draws keep our fate in our own hands.
Is anybody going to this game or to Honduras? I considered the Olimpia game until I read all the travel advisories. Even Lonely Planet discourages traveling to Tegucigalpa. Wow. If it were Costa Rica or Panama I'd go, but not these two, sadly. And I agree with Celt, poor Boni needs some rest, he's not a perpetual motion machine, but we really need him there. I wish he could communicate better with his team mates.... maybe we should take Josue down there too to help out. I seriously think we will be able to win this game. I just hope the guys don't try to go out clubbing while they are there. This is about Tegucigalpa, I think San Salvador is about the same.... http://www.lonelyplanet.com/honduras/tegucigalpa/practical-information/health
I wanted to go to Honduras. All I needed was two other orange brothers -- hopefully one that spoke spanish since I don't. No hermanos.
Jason Kreis apparently says that RSL has no tape of Tauro. I wonder if Dom is able to get video of Concacaf opponents more easily.
I think that is correct if the assumption is you win at home, which we should know from our previous experience in CCL, isn't always assured with some of the squads we out out there.
i go to some games but wouldn't consider myself a big fan or anything. looking forward to the new stadium...was supposed to open this month but it looks to be WAY behind schedule. will be a nice little venue though.
This piece has some info on FAS, as well as the other CCL opponents this week: http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/...tauro-fc-cd-fas-isidro-metapan-08201?m_n=true
REFEREES FOR TOMORROW AS ASSIGNED BY CONCACAF: CD FAS (SLV) vs. Houston Dynamo (USA), 10 p.m. Referee: Marco Brea (CUB) Assistant: Hiran Dopico (CUB) Assistant: Jose Rodrigues (CUB) Fourth: David Rubalcaba (CUB)
yep-looking at their webcam last week, pretty sure that isn't opening this season. But I'll be there when it opens, with my Houston Sammy Appiah jersey on!
A story from Prensa Gráfica in El Salvador about Fas' last Saturday game and the upcoming Dynamo one. The last paragraph is interesting: Also about the game, the coach says http://www.laprensagrafica.com/deportes/futbol-nacional/278589-fas-ahora-piensa-en-el-dynamo.html In addition, FIFA has announced a $15,400 fine against the El Salvador's soccer federation for some things that occurred during their qualifying match against Mexico earlier this summer. Specifically a cup of beer was thrown from the stands and lasers were shown onto the field (a la Tim Howard in Mexico....) They are imposing some sanctions too against the stadium for their next game against Guyana in September, but I wonder if they will be more careful for the Dynamo game as well. http://www.edhdeportes.com/index.ph...multo-a-el-salvador-con-mas-de-15-mil-dolares
