Just a quick programming reminder for anyone interested in seeing the documentary "Game of Their Lives" about the NK soccer team that upset Italy in 1966. It'll be on Sundance tonight (12/6/04) at 9pm EST.
Followed by Whipped, described as "Three New York Dominatrixes discuss how their carrers affect their personal lives." Um, okay. Think I'll stick to the first two .
If you haven't seen this, set your TiVo/VCR/whatever. I would have enjoyed this even if I weren't a soccer fan.
Unfortunately, my cable system here doesn't have Sundance (I miss it, because I used to have it in Alabama), so if anyone's willing to tape it, I'd be happy to Paypal you the money to cover the tape and postage. PM if you're down for that.
Thanks for noting this -- Comcast had no show description in its upcoming listings, but I added it to the DVR thinking that that's what it might have been. I've seen pieces of it but never the whole thing. "The Other Final" is fabulous, uplifting stuff, and I'd recommend that to anybody whether they're a soccer fan or not.
For those in the San Francisco Bay Area (and according to a friend, in the Sacramento area as well), the Sundance Channel is on Comcast Digital Cable channel 505, and will be airing "The Game of Their Lives" at 9pm PST and "The Other Final" at 10:25pm PST. -G
Great... I don't have sundance. That really sucks. I've been wanting to watch this since forever. Here's hoping some dude out there puts this up on bitTorrent.
What a great night of TV, 2 really good movies. I think Montserrat would have had a better chance if they'd had the dog in goal.
If you miss tonight's airings, you can catch them again throughout the month (check your local listings). -G
Excellent. Time to plan it out this time and call up my buddies who have the channel to record it for me.
I don't have Sundance either, but HPI's torrent tracker would be willing to host a torrent of the movie, if somebody who can get it would create an XviD or KVCD or something.
I finally got a chance to watch both films last night. I didn't know about how the Middlesborough fans supported the North Koreans. The line from the Korean player saying that even to this day that their support is a mystery to him was great. Eusebio was a monster of a player. Has there been any word of them playing a match in 2006 between the two worst teams again? If so, I'm guessing Nike and Addidas will jump on board this time. They came off looking bad in their disinterest in the 2002 match.
Another great movie, The Cup, is playing on IFC this month. It was filmed in Bhutan by a Tibetan lama. It's quite something.
I remember reading something at the time that said the Dutch organizers didn't think they'd try to pull it off again, but FIFA & sponsors should step in and do it. Actually, in an ideal world, they'd add it to the final week festivities in Germany in a WC stadium, with the tickets priced low -- like, 5 & 10 Euros -- and the proceeds going to the two national teams. People from around the world visiting Germany on soccer holiday, waiting around for the final, would absolutely pay that for a fun game. (Well, at least I would.) As great as it was in the film to see the game in Bhutan and the crowd huddled on top of each other on the endlines, when else would players from teams like Montserrat and Bhutan get to play on a real professional field in front of 40 - 50K? Also, look at how many flight connections the Montserrat team had to take to get there. Let FIFA wine and dine both teams for the game of a lifetime....
The only possible downside to this idea is that it may create an incentive for the bottom teams to lose. It would be better to be #202 and #203 than it would be to be #180-#201 or so. I like the idea of raising money for these smaller federations but perhaps the money should be spread over the bottom 20 teams or so.
Perhaps, but I'd like to believe that these smaller countries have too much honor to do something like that. For a team ranked 200 to get a win over anyone would be huge, so I can't see them tanking a game just to get a trip somewhere. Oh well, maybe that's my idealism overshadowing realism. I think that's a good idea though. Interestingly enough, if they played this game today, it would be two American dependencies playing: #204 American Samoa vs. #205 Guam
I could possibly get it later on in the month. I missed it the first time because I didn't think I had the Sundance channel. I do.
The next airing of The Cup is this Sunday at 12:15pm EST / 9:15am PST (Comcast Digital Cable channel 503 in both the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Sacramento area). -G
