A curious incident happened yesterday with a friend of mine. During the course of a conversation about the home opener, my friend came the realization that the game was on Saturday, not on Sunday. It never occurred to me that someone might not know the day. The hour. The minute. The exact moment when a fan gets to cross the threshold of Sporting Park. When I first see the schedule, this day becomes holy. It is a blessed day in the spring that gets circled on the calendar, ingrained into my heart and mind. The world around me bends to that moment. This is my Christmas Morning, the first firework blazing brilliantly in the night sky on the 4th of July, or the first steps outside with my new costume on each Halloween. This is my baptism into the new year. All week is my Sporting KC Appreciation week, ending the work week with my Friday Blues. So this is significant. It means something. Beginning its 3rd decade of existence, today is game day. There is no other day. No excuses. The rebirth of Sporting, The annual event. The catharsis of winter anticipation. I don't mistake this day. i don't know how he can make that mistake either, but considering our paltry total of only 4 saturday home games this year, he might be forgiven for thinking this is just another non-saturday game. then again, the few saturday games we DO have should probably make each one stand out more.
