This game will be a good litmus test. RSL ex-players Corey Baird and Tate Schmidt are on Houston. Corey is a regular starter, and Tate was until a season-ending ACL injury against San Jose on April Fool's Day.

Houston has splashed cash on a few players and have the most amazing coach ever in the history of MLS, Ben Olsen. They've been a team the last few years that just seems a bit snake-bit, playing well for 80-90% of the game, missing 1-2 great chances and blowing it on stupid defensive lapses every game. It seems that those lapses have been largely ironed out with Ben Olsen, and, oddly, with the departure of Tim Parker and Fafa Picault. Weird.

Houston are actually doing OK this year, better than us for sure. They've been bottom-of-the-table in the Western Conference for years. However, they are 4W-0T-0L at home, all shutouts, so far in 2023 against Austin, NYCFC, Galaxy, and Miami.

I know playing in Houston is always tough. A tie would be a good result. A shutout, even if 0-0, would be amazing.

Pablo Ruiz is red-card out. Even though he has been error-prone (probably due to missing pre-season as he was in the process of getting his green card), this team still heavily relies on his control and delivery to make whatever the hell Pablo is trying to do work.

Kreilach is ready to be a part of the gameday roster, if not starting. Last week, we reported:

    Real Salt Lake
    • OUT: Zach Farnsworth (thigh)
    • OUT: Axel Kei (ankle)
    • OUT: Delentz Pierre (leg)
    • QUESTIONABLE: Andrew Brody (ankle)
    • QUESTIONABLE: Erik Holt (Achilles)
    • QUESTIONABLE: Anderson Julio (hamstring)
    • QUESTIONABLE: Brayan Vera (hip)
    • QUESTIONABLE: Tomas Gomez (knee)
Gomez and Vera played the whole game.
Luna and Beavers played for the Monarchs last week (Luna did VERY well).

    I'm guessing we start:

    Macmath
    Hidalgo-Glad-Silva-Vera
    Gomez-Loëfflesend-Ojeda-Savarino
    Rubin-Musovski

Holding Kreilach back for a late-game sub if we are behind.

Now that's how you start a game day thread.

I would think that this is how the lineup will look:

    Macmath
    Oviedo-Glad-Silva-Vera
    Gomez-Loëfflesend-Caldwell-Savarino
    Rubin-Musovski

I bet Pablo likes how they played last week so as little change as possible in the starting 11. Although he does like to throw players to the wolves on the road so I wouldn't be surprised if Hidalgo and Kreilach both start. Maybe Eneli who has shown promise.

I know who won't be starting and that's Luna. Bank on that, reverse psychology.

Ruiz really put the team in a bind by being flat out dumb and getting a second yellow at the end of the game last week. I think little Stevie Rogers gets the start for the same reason he did last week and I would like Ojeda in there but if he didn't put Caldwell on the bench last week, why this week?

Would also like to see Bertin get a start. Leading scorer in the undefeated RSL preseason and yet hasn't started as RSL struggled. Coincidence? I think not! lol.

The midfield is chock full of depth players that should be waiting for a late game sub rather than starting. Love Jasper but damn, this team needs to upgrade something fierce in the midfield.

Time will tell but Dami looks so done, toasted, roasted, slow, a step behind, that he looks like an anchor out there but I could be wrong.

This is a good test to see if either team wants to be contenders or pretenders.

Contenders for what? Just curious. For RSL, we could be contenders to make the playoffs. I wouldn’t call us contenders for the conference semifinals, but in this strange league the odds are not zero if the club gets into the playoffs. Dynamo are averaging a healthy 1.63 pts/game and, at this moment, can be considered to be Cup contenders, imo.

If he manages to get 3 shots on frame that will be a Rubin Hat Trick.

So no guarantee Luna gets minutes with all the other offensive players on the bench.
Interesting lineup. What's the story with Silva?

Fairly aggressive press over the first twenty minutes. The best chance was to Houston via Carrasquilla but we've held our own.

That was a pretty neat nutmeg pass in the box by Jacquesson to Savarino.

Can’t help but wonder what Savarino could have done without though three players collapsing on him knowing that they didn’t need to worry about Rubin.

Dynamo looked sweet on those passes at the end of which Baird hit the top bar…but, every one of those guys had a ton of space. No tight marking anywhere.

We got very lucky that Houston blew that attack. And fortunate Glad didn't compound the turnover with a red.

Caldwell totally dropped his runner, Baird, who then pings it off the bar.

And what the hell happened there?

I was prepared to say it was a fun half and a worthy effort, and then the last two minutes happened. Now it's a lucky-to-be-at-zeroes scenario.
