http://foxsports.lycos.com/content/view?contentId=579751 LA is still getting some love 2 months after the season ended by our dear friends at Fox Sportsworld. LA at # 31 - ahead of other noteables such as River Plate, Everton and seemingly Celtic, whom I can't find in the rankings. When will we see 2 MLS teams ranked simultaneously? Nice to see an MLS team still up there.
Great for MLS I think it's great for MLS. Having two MLS teams on there would rule, but having an international audience reading that LA is a great team is pretty cool.
Oh lift us up where we belong, where the eagles fly, on a mountain high . . . Yeah, it's way cool to see L.A. up there, but I wonder how much of the world is looking at the ranking and thinking, "WTF?" On the other hand, get used to it, world.
If the Galaxy do well at Rev Moon's Peace Cup this July they'll merit their 31st ranking. Slated to play: #17 PSV Eindhoven (Holland) #31 LA Galaxy (USA) #37 Sao Paolo (Brazil) Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) AS Roma (Italy) Lyon (France) Songnam Ilhwa (Korea) Kaiser Chiefs (South Africa) http://www.soccerway.com/news/?page=details&area=1041936300
Go Galaxy. The competition is good, but not great. Most of those Euro teams are having down years and by July their stars will be on summer break.
Actually Lyon's doing pretty well this year. They're presently at the top of the French 1st division, and in fact are #41 in the Fox poll. But as you say, Roma and Leverkusen are having off-years. Still, with FIFA's World Club Championships in seemingly indefinite limbo, it would be great if Rev Moon is able to pull this tournament off. And with the winners getting $2 mil and the runners-up $0.5 mil, we'll probably see the clubs field stronger lineups than you'd otherwise expect.
Is this a FIFA sanctioned event? Probably not since it looks like it could happen I hope SUM gets their hands on this and we can watch it over here - PPV or otherwise. The other thread about MLS parity is all well and good - to a point. MLS needs to be able to point to club success in international events for increased credibility. The World Cup helped a bunch. LA beating Roma will help too.
They'll get thumped by Lyon, AS Roma, and Einhoven will hold their own against Sao Paulo and Leverkusen. Not sure about the rest.
Ruiz will not be there, BTW.. He will be playing for Guatemala at the time.. He could come in for the end of it (after the opening round) but I don't expect that.
