Four unprotected in expansion draft Associated Press CARSON, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Galaxy left midfielder Marcelo Saragosa and three others unprotected for Friday's MLS expansion draft. Saragosa started 24 of the Galaxy's 30 regular-season games and played in two others. Others left unprotected were defender-midfielder Paul Broome, goalkeeper Dan Popik and midfielder-forward Arturo Torres. Saragosa was left unprotected because of the low risk of losing him to either of the two expansion teams, Real Salt Lake and Club Deportivo Chivas USA. That's mainly because of the high fee required to pay Brazil's Sao Paulo FC necessary to obtain Saragosa, Galaxy general manager Doug Hamilton said on a conference call Tuesday. The Galaxy obtained Saragosa on loan from San Paulo FC under terms of its relationship with the Brazilian team. Broome started 20 games in 2004 and recorded one assist; Torres had one goal and two assists in 18 games, and Popik made just one appearance, playing 45 minutes. Under terms of the expansion draft, teams can protect 12 players and lose a maximum of two.
You misread the article - Jones is not unprotected, just one of three players who has played for the same team for nine years.
