GU is in the planning phase of building a new multipurpose sports facility on campus next to the new Southwest Quad (which is what you're seeing if you've seen the cranes from Key Bridge).

It's set to host the GU Men's and Women's Soccer team, and it says the field is FIFA regulation (no notes on size yet).

Besides the fact that former DCU "star" =0) Clint Peay is now on the coaching staff, this is an interesting new site for soccer in DC.

Obviously it's not big enough for a permanent home for DCU, but it's be an interesting site for exhibitions and maybe Open Cup games since it's in the city (and accessible to G-town bars!)

Here's a link to the virtual tour:

    Check it out.

That would be cool if I lived in NW, but I don't know how traffic would work, even for like 3 or 4k to show up for an Open Cup game.

Its already impossible to drive on Wisconsin or M around there, and until the new Blue line goes in (2020?) its a nice walk across the Key bridge...

I took the virtual tour and it said that the soccer teams would only use the facility if the soccer fields were too wet. It's part of a larger project that will include a new track-soccer facility and the renovation of the McDonough gym. Basically this new stadium is for the football team and their jump to the Patriot League, as well as lacrosse. It will also house the athletics offices and team rooms, thus enabling the hoops team to play more games in a renovated McDonough hall (where they could create more atmosphere than at MCI as well as take home more money). I think it's a good move for Georgetown, though as Chayes points out, it's hard to draw fans without Metro accessibility.

I do like the idea of United playing a game or two there, but I think the surface will be some variant of artificial turf. Between the Soccerplex and Maryland's Ludwig Field, there seems to be a growing number of options for Open Cup games.

That would be nice and convenient for me.

Isn't there a shuttle from Foggy Bottom to GU's campus?

Isn't Georgetown dry like Naperville? You sure you want a couple of games there?

damn, i guess i must of been drinking root beer at the numerous root beer bars *right* across the street from the stadium

note to self... quit acting drunk when drinking root beer, there is no alcohol in it

I think he meant selling beer in the stadium, smart ass.

And yes, a stadium on the G'town campus would be dry cause you can't sell beer at an NCAA venue.

It's true about not selling alcohol at NCAA venues.

But the campus isn't dry. Heavens no! Take this from a recent alum.

As an old time alum I can state GU is now and has always been far from dry.

But you CAN buy beer at G-town games at the MCI Center. God bless large Big East Arenas!

    Sorry for straying off topic.

it's not true that ncaa venues can't sell alcohol

    they can

they just can't do it at ncaa functions

if you have any doubt of this consider that the chicago bears played at the university of illinois' memorial stadium... where acohol isn't sold for ncaa or ihsa football games, but was for bear games

Well, even that isn't always true. Rules have loopholes, and there are sometimes end-arounds any of it.

I don't recall a sporting event at Tulane that DIDN'T have alcohol.

I'm just happy we're keeping in mind the most important issue regarding a stadium, alcohol.

I just thought it was interesting because it could provide another facility availible to the DC Soccer-going public. Even though I'm sure G-town will keep it busy with what little space they have for their teams.
