The problem is that things have changed, and I wonder if he can't go back. This is the problem. Tons of info from Fulham, none on the Clint side of things. Terrible PR work.

This has built up a bit more steam even since I made my first post.

Apparently Ellis Short (our owner/chairman) met with Dempsey and his agent in London last night (two Texas boys together), talks went well and now we're trying to agree a fee with Fulham.

Bad news for some of you guys I'm sure but I'd be delighted with this signing.

if true Gutted. There is a charm and whimsical weirdness to Fulham. Their owner is a straight nutter. Sunderland reminds me of chic-filet or whatever they call themselves, just something new built on an old concept. No real identity or tradition (that i can identify with, anyway). Fulham were a great team to cheer for. Liverpool would be as well. I despise arsenal, but there is grudging respect there, but if the bids arent coming, what can he do?

I have a soft spot for Newcastle myself. I don't "support" any team in particular, but I like Everton, Newcastle, fulham (used to), loved blackpool when they were up...love that wide open style and Holloway.

Dempsey might have CL ambitions but if a CL-caliber will not move for him why not look for the biggest long-term paycheck he can realistically expect ? Is he willing to forgo double the money this year for a chance a CL club will pick up a 30 year old player on a free next year ?

I'm so pissed off by Liverpool and their fans that I'd be fine with him moving to Sunderland.

He would slot in so well with what they are doing. He was literally made for BR's game. He is the perfect tweener, midfield passing/striker mentality. All the things people used to complain about him now make him the prototypical player for Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, even Chelsea.

Probably Jayrard blocking the deal after Dempsey schooled him at the WC.

This is precisely it, for Dempsey to play at a CL club there has to be the interest from the club in the first place. He would probably be in a better position next year, but even then it wouldn't be a complete certainty, plus a club like Sunderland who have money and may reasonably expect him to be among their best players would probably pay him more than a CL team who might see him as a squad player.

I can easily see Clint agreeing to go to Sunderland. Sunderland are happy to have a player that guarantees they will not be in the relegation threat zone. Clint is happy to get paid his worth at a time when there isn't much time left.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. I don't understand what everybody is complaining about.

Fullham cash in their chips instead of seeing them swept off the table a year from now when Clint would have walked on a free.

It will be interesting to see if Sunderland finish ahead of Fullham this year.

They definitely will if Dempsey is playing for them.

Six months from now he should talk the Houston back out of Stuart Holden and bring us full circle.

Tbf the likes of Dempsey, Sessegnon, Fletcher, & Johnson mixes for a fun & skillfull side. Im still going to cry if this indeed turns out to be a failed chance to have an American be a key player for a key European side though.

Somehow I would bet that "Being a Legend at Fulham" has never been on Clint's "To Do" list.

Why does everyone keep saying things like this? Do you not understand the current reality of his transfer situation?

He's got a year left but Fulham want 10 million or whatever. No one is willing to pay that when he'll be free in 9 months. If he were to play out his deal and leave on a free tons of teams would be interested. Use some common sense.

If his name was Dempseau, instead of Dempsey, Arsene Wanker would have bought him a long time ago.

Agree. The question is can he play out the current deal? I'm not sure that marriage is salvagable. If not, then he needs to get the most $ in the best position possible. Maybe that is Sunderland.

I don't think in his heart of hearts CD will be pleased with the way it all worked out either, but hey....given lemons, make chicken shit right? Wait...thats not right.

It seems irreparable, but who knows. Tevez is playing and scoring at City so I guess anything is possible.

It's against Fulham's interest at this point to have him continue to play for them, IMO. The cards are on the table.

You know you make some decent points... not great, but decent. The problem is your points are independent of the game that was just played. Liverpool just scored 2 on Man City, Carroll had a header cleared off the line, Borini should have buried one, there was a penalty shout... LFC are going to be just fine if you ask me. Are they challenging for the league, of course not, will they finish in CL spots, I dunno that depends on how Spurs do without Modric and if Arsene can figure it out and if Newcastle can get better service to their strikers and some other stuff on Liverpool's end of things. But to suggest Dempsey is some kind of incredibly obvious answer for LFC is so disingenuous. At this point I wonder how much Dempsey would feature for this side, at all. I'm certain he would play, but so many around here see him as easily sliding in as starter...

By the way, as far as supporting runners into the box and ignoring that some people were out of position, against Man City there was a more cautious approach taken and, barring 2 awful defensive lapses, it worked pretty well. Against other teams you'll see Gerrard more consistently forward, you'll see Shelvey and Allen not sit back as much. Suarez was stranded on occasion, too often imo, but context is important -- Man City have one of the most potent sides in the prem and the tactics reflected this to some extent. if you don't prioritize the middle versus Man City you'll be played off the park.

    No doubt.

What if Dempsey were English. How much would he be "worth". $20 million?

No offense to Sunderland, but if he goes there I will be very disappointed. I was really hoping for a move to Arsenal. I don't have any love for Liverpool, but I'd be ok with a move there too.

Agree with that. My personal opinion is that FFC actually didn't want him back this season knowing he'd be gone on a free....so much so that they didn't want him on preseason. They were trying to maximize sell value by dragging it out as late as possible. Then Jol stepped in it in the pc before the opening match of the season by blaming it all on CD. CD is understandably pissed, and FFC have totally screwed up any possible sale to Liverpool. Now both sides have to accept something they likely wouldnt' have at the start of summer.

How were both goals scored? Set pieces right? Can't count on that every game. Maybe hides some cracks in the team performance right? From the run of play, how did they look? I thought they were ok, not great. I think they could use CD cutting in from the left. Sterling is nice, but not ready for ft duty. He would be a starter right now for Liverpool. Maybe not in 2 years, but he would right now.

Eh, if Fulham were to get the reported ~8 million pounds for him they'll be relatively pleased (regardless of who pays it). I've always thought that that was probably the best they could hope for given his age/contract status/etc.
