i'm just curious why isn't FSW broadcasts match (es ) with US players in it, for example, today bundesliga match featuring Bayern M instead of Hannover 96 or Nurmburg , or why not Fulham, Man City, Man U instead of Arsenal, or Chelsie , i'm sure the rating will be way better , is it about budget problem ? i'll pay alittle more if i have to..., it's just a reminder but, i still love FSW no matter what...
Go check out the Fox Sports World Forum for answers to everything FSW related. The long and the short of it - they take what they're fed. They don't have control over what games they're provided.
International TV for Bundesliga games are currently controlled by the marketing agency SportFive, which took over the agency formerly in charge of the distribution rights, ISPR. SportFive/ISPR decides which Bundesliga games to export. The primary export markets are Brazil (ESPN Brasil), Argentina (TyC Sports), Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe. As for EPL, an international consortium managed by IMG/TWI is in charge of distribution. NewsCorp is a member of this consortium and has decision-making power due to its control of TV rights in Asia (Singapore-based ESPN STAR Sports, which is 50% owned and 100% managed by NewsCorp). The primary export market for EPL is Asia with over 150 million homes passed. Notice that the best EPL games now air on Saturdays at 12:30pm UK Time so that they air in Prime Time (6:30pm, 7:30pm, or 8:30pm) in East and Southeast Asia (Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, and parts of China), where EPL outdraws other TV sports products by as much as 10 to 1.
Today 4/11 freiburg v stuttgart is on instead of Hannover which is played at the same time, it doesn't make sense at all, but, .....I STILL LIKE FSW NO MATTER WHAT.
The US market for German Bundesliga doesn't matter to SportFive/ISPR. Stuttgart is a big team. 6 more weeks left until Bundesliga disappears from FOX Sports World... Get ready for wall-to-wall EPL in 2004-2005: 10 games each week.
I've noticed that a lot of the best EPL matches are broadcast live on Fox Sports World Canada, while Fox Sports World in the U.S. shows them on tape-delay (or not at all). Is the PPV phenomenom mainly a U.S. thing, or is it common in other parts of the world too?
Are you sure FSW will air ALL 10 GAMES or we will get 8 and have to buy PPV for the other 2 as it is now? I realize that they FSW now airs the Sunday PPV later in the week. Does that also happen with the Saturday PPV, too?
It does. Funny this week, Tuesday FSW will show Man U live at 3:00 Eastern, then show Man U's game from Saturday (the PPV game) in the evening. My question for someone who knows: FSW always shows the Sunday 9:00 Eastern game on tape delay. Is this by choice or part of the PPV deal?
FSI certainly has plenty of inventory to sublicense to both Rogers Sportsnet and Global TV (Global TV owns and operates FOX Sports World Canada). I would be surprised if the status quo isn't maintained in Canada: Rogers Sportsnet gets two Saturday games each week and Global TV/FSWC get the rest. Both Sportsnet and Global TV/FSWC want EPL.
Is making the Saturday game the biggest a NEW thing? I always thought the primary game was 4:00 UK time on Sunday since that's the only match that ALWAYS airs on Sky Sports UK. One other game may air on Sky but the majority of the other televised games are on NewsCorp-managed PPV. By this logic, will matchups like Man U-Arsenal move to Saturday at 12:30 or stay on Sunday?
I think the early Sunday game may be delayed to a) air infomercials to raise money (can't really air them in the afternoon) b) protect against early start times for the Sunday Bundesliga game which they have a contract to carry and will almost always do live (sometimes they have begun at 9:30 though usually 11:30); obviously Bundesliga is gone after this season c) it takes some time to set up for a PPV telecast- note that there is 30 minutes from the early Saturday game to the PPV telecast at 10:00 d) it's not usually one of the better games of the weekend (except for derby days) But I don't know for sure.
PPV sucks. 72 hour delay is worthless. Especially during hockey/basketball season, which is most of the time. From observation (and maybe this changes next year), the early Saturday game here is one is always a good matchup, maybe not the best (although the "best" match isn't always clear cut), while the Sunday late game (of which there always is one) is also really good.
You could very well be right. I do remember earlier this season (?) Man U v Liverpool (?) aired live at 8:30 Eastern on FSW, and FSW did delay a Bundesliga game recently for Millwall/Tranmere (?). So I'm guessing they can delay the Bundesliga when they want. And the early Sunday game never runs past 11 anyway because that's when the "big"/PPV game starts. Could easily be reason c though. Still sucks. I don't think I've ever watched the game when it's delayed, whereas I probably would watch it if it aired live.
The number of televised games in Britain is definitely increasing for the next 3-year cycle. Some more 12:30 UK time Saturday games and also some 5:00 UK time Saturday games. Couple those with the 4:00 UK time Sunday game and I believe it should add up to Sky Sports UK showing about 40 more games a year than under the previous deal.
The big EPL teams usually can't play on most Sundays due to midweek UEFA Champions League matches. The Saturday 12:30pm UK Time slot was created for the big matchups. Because they air on Prime Time in Asia, the TV rights fees in Asia can increase. China is the next big sports TV market, which is currently regulated very tightly. ESPN STAR Sports has to sell its sports inventory to China Central Television (CCTV) and various provincial TV stations. ESPN STAR currently does not have its own channel in China, as the only legally-available all-sports TV channel in China at this time is CCTV 5. That will eventually change as cable TV becomes widely available in China. (Note that MTV China is already available in 60 million homes.)
Since this hasn't been mentioned yet... what drives the times games air on FSW(US) is start times advertising dollars. My guess is that FSW sells the advertiser a package that says you are guaranteed a "live" match on Sat. & Sun. mornings at 10am approx. and also a rebroadcast during weekday prime-time. As for the FSW(US) PPV package. I bought it this year for the first time, and I'm 50/50 on getting it again next year for reasons mentioned on other threads (mono sound, simple production, etc..). After seeing a SKY TV L'pool v. Man U match on FSW in '03 I was hooked on their production with the pre-game and post game commentary and the TWI feed just doesn't cut it for me no matter how reasonable the price is.
BSkyB is allowed to offer its FA Cup (and possibly England/Ireland team) feeds for the games it broadcasts. Octagon CSI produces an international broadcast for the BBC and untelevised games. TWI has exclusive rights to offer its feed for EPL so all the international broadcasters must use it. Sky provides the pictures. There are a few reasons TWI offers an international feed and does it as they do: 1. It allows the game to be broadcast in the language the broadcaster wants to use or otherwise dub on its own commentary (such as when FSW has Max Bretos commentate the game). You wouldn't want to see a bunch of talking heads in English being quickly translated into Chinese or another language by a voice-over. 2. It allows the broadcaster to sell "targeted" ads- next to the time/score graphic, at the bottom of the screen etc. 3. Some broadcasters, such as FSW, must fit the game broadcast into a time window. TWI shows the game and offers some brief pictures and commentary before and after the match but little more than a minute or two. It would not look or sound good if a broadcaster had to cut off the Sky pregame/postgame shows for commercials or because the broadcast time elapsed or because it was going to its own studio show. 4. Along the lines of the preceding reasons, a lot of people around the world probably just want to see the game. Plain and simple. The Highlights Show has postgame interviews.
Futbol Brasileiro is being de-emphasized at FSI. FOX Sports World now buries it on Sundays at midnight eastern time after FOX Sports World Report, while FOX Sports en Espanol now buries it deep at Monday nights at 11pm Pacific Time (Tuesdays at 2am Eastern Time). (The Sunday 9pm ET/6pm PT slot on FOX Sports en Espanol now has Copa America 1995 and 1997 re-runs.) Futbol Brasileiro appears to be the next one to be sacrificed by FSI in any budget crunch. Get ready for wall-to-wall EPL in 2004-2005: 380 games on FOX Sports World each season, up from 165 in 2003-2004. Bye bye Dutch, French, and German Football.
What does this mean? Are these matches available in 150 million homes or are they actually watched in 150 million homes. There was a discussion here about NFL vs. EPL viewership. Most of us had the impression that EPL world-wide viewership is much bigger (even if one compares only the viewership for the Superbowl vs. an average EPL match). However, none (or very few) of us could come up with real statistics.
