Last night it was an hour. You may have watched it on Tuesday night when the England-Portugal Quarterfinal went longer because of extra time and penalty kicks. This cut into the time of the FSW report.
Actually, I believe both Monday and Tuesday were only half hour shows. They tried to cover it up on Tuesday by not showing the beginning bumper however a few seconds of it got through before they cut it off and jumped ahead it. There is little going on now with only the Euro Championship going on and MLS usually only playing on the weekend. Will get worse next week when the tournament there ends as well as the Copa Libertadores. Don't know how much coverage we'll see of the Copa America.
Actually, FSWR has stuff to cover in July: Copa America, Le Tour de France, ChampionsWorld Series, MLS, Campeonato Brasileiro, European Golf, assorted minor tennis tournaments, Formula 1, World Rally Championship, etc. etc. etc. FSWR can air up to 90 seconds of highlights for each event if there is no embargo by the rightsholder. That means Copa America can fill 3 minutes and Le Tour can fill another 90 seconds. SNTV and Reuters sometimes have canned interview packages which FSWR can use to fill another 60-90 seconds. If push comes to shove, FSWR can always go "next door" to Global TV and borrow 90 seconds of video clips from Champ Car. The only highlights FSWR cannot air, due to licencing restrictions imposed by Canadian media regulator CRTC, are major North American team sports (MLB, NFL, CFL, Arena Football, NBA, NHL). Filling 20 minutes (for a 30-minute show) isn't that difficult for FSWR each night. Filling 40 minutes (for a 60-minute show) will be challenging during the dog days of summer.
Monday's show was 30-minutes repeated because of the Canadian Federal Election. Due to resource commitments for our new department, we were forced to shorten the show and tape it in the afternoon. Tuesday was a full show and so was every other show this week. We have NO plans to reduce the show to 30-minutes - summer or otherwise. There is plenty of stuff to keep us busy so don't worry - any reduced shows on air are not being reduced at source. I still sit in the studio for an hour with Michelle every night. J1
Am I mistaken in thinking that many 1-hour FSWR shows are essentially 30-minute shows, but with much of the content repeated during the latter part of these shows?
Not really. FSWR can pretty much fill the entire Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday shows from August-May. The Match of the Day segment is intended to show full highlights of a particularly good English or German soccer game. For all other shows, FSWR puts in as much content as possible, plus the weekly goals of the week, MLS, rugby, and Max Bretos segments. Then, some of the top soccer stories get repeated followed by a couple of minutes of "other" sports news to close out the show.
LB: Huh? The England-Portugal quarterfinal coverage was 2hrs. The pregame/first half/halftime/second half (along with commercials) took up the first 1hr 50mins. Then we got 8 mins or so of highlights of the extra time/penalty kicks with a FSW announcer doing commentary. Coverage ended at 9:58 pm ET. We then got a 2 mins of commercials and FSW report started at 10:00 pm ET. (Or at least I think it did as I was watching something else at the time. I heard it may have started a few mins after 10:00 pm ET.)
Why is that? Isn't that the case only for events that have rights issues? They show more than 90 seconds of EPL matches, but they own the rights to those.
