QUOTE]Originally posted by Mountainia I am happy with Comcast for showing the game. I wish I got FSW, but I don't. I hope more games are on Comcast. They only seemed to have two cameras. One wide angle, and one for closeups. When the wide angle camera was being used, I could only tell the dark haired players from the non-dark haired players. Maybe my eyes are going. Well, I could see the mullet pretty well. I was going to bring this up and Mountainia beat me to it. I think I've got a pretty good TV setup - I have digital cable and a Sony Wega. Why did all the DCU players look like Reyes when viewed with FSW's long range camera? I know Reyes wasn't playing but I think there were 11 of him out there tonight. Even Earnie and the blondes looked like they had long, dark hair. I couldn't read numbers at all. I must say it's a more enjoyable game when I know who's doing what. What's the problem? Is it the KC stadium? Is it going to be like this for all FSW broadcasts? Beaker
I was flipping back and forth between FSW and CSN and the picture on CSN was much much better.. FSW seems to put their matches, especially the ones eminating from Argentina and Brazil through a sort of "filter" that skews the picture a little bit.. The difference in picture quality was like night and day.. I stayed mostly with CSN even though I do enjoy Bretos and Hopkins banter...
I also had the option of switching back and forth. My friend and I thought CSN's grass was greener. But, I also noticed that CSN let more crowd noise in so it actually sounded like there may have 20,000+ people in the stands. On FSW it sounded muted. A couple of comments: First, any of you stat-happing rating people, please realize this game was shown on two different sports networks simultaneously. Secondly, since FSW paid to show MLS games, they have a sign on the field. So, even when CSN picked up the feed, FSW received advertising on another sports network...
While I'm glad FSW is showing MLS. I had to switch to CSN 5 minutes into the match. Couldn't make out any players on FSW's feed and, quite frankly, the camera-work was making me nauseous.
Well, I could hardly tell who was who on CSN, so I guess I'm glad I didn't have to watch FSW's feed. I actually assumed that they would share the same feed. Why double their costs like that? You would think they would pool their resourcses for that, costs being such a big issue for soccer broadcasting. I am hoping that was just a KC limitation. It is a big stadium, and the cameras might be in the upper deck somewhere. At least, I hope so. (BTW, I had a roomate in college named 'Beaker')
Yeah, the camera work was my only really complaint. I liked Bretos' commentary a lot. 1000000% improvement over Ty Keough. I hope subsequent matches look a little better than this one. Still, I'll tune in for every one, and tape the ones I'm out of the house for. MLS on Fox Sports World is almost too good to be true. I watch that network too much as it is!
Did you hear the KC fans giving Etch the "mullet cheer" on the corner kick? I had to laugh. Then he would have freakin scored on the corner, were it not for a heads-up save by Meola.
Same here - I couldn't see squat on FSW, plus the tv w/out digital in my house is better than the one with. So, I ended up moving downstairts and watch CSN. But, I did return to FSW for the post game.
I guess it's time to let the folks at Comcast know we appreciate the coverage, but they could tweak the camera work a bit. here is the email address: viewermail@comcastsportsnet.com <viewermail@comcastsportsnet.com>
FSW and such..... I agree with everyone about the picture quality.....but it struck me that having any type of coverage on Sat. nights is great. I missed the LA/Dal because of work, but now I can still catch the FSW after work......it's like Christmas on the Saturdays I don't work!
Re: Re: FSW broadcast I caught that too. Along with their rendition of "When the Saints Come Marching In", which they sang 3 times in the first 25 min. or so. Real creative on their part, and aside from the mullet chant, nothing after the first half hour or so.
I agree FSW angles were terrible. They had a close up camera that wasn't bad but the only other tv camera was a view that was terrible you couldn't even make out the players it was like sitting in the most crapy seats in the stadium. I hope they don't show all matches like that this season.
I had to tape the game and chose FSW just to see how they did the game. I agree with the people talking about the poor picture quality. I do not mind Bretos but he had quite a bit of information wrong in his comments. I remember two and there were others that I forget. 1. Preki scored a goal to elad Bruce Arena's US team over Brazil (Sampson ws the coach) 2. We lost Jaime Moreno who was an original United player (no he wasn't) Still, I am glad to have them on board and glad to see the league getting more coverage.
Not to state the obvious, but the source(ie cable(analog or digital), dish) is key when considering the picture quality. I watched on DISH and had three channels with the game. The best picture by far was on the shootout. Dish gives more bandwith/less compression to the PPV channels. I dont know about CSN vs FSW. FSW picture quality was not good, but compensated by Bretos. He did make some mistakes with attributing plays/players. When I turned on CSN there was the MLS scoreboard banner on top and a general scoreboard banner on the bottom a la "the deuce", hence a horrible picture. Late in the game I switched to CSN and it looked better. Superstition got the best and worst of me(Wrongens presence) and I went back to FSW.
Comcast Announcer's Voice Did anybody think that guy's voice who was doing the commentary on Comcast with Rongen sounded like NBC newsman Brian Williams? I kept expecting a cutaway to Baghdad...
Being that I live in NC and will get to see at least half of DC's games this season on tv(as compared to four or six last season), I won't complain about the picture quality. Anybody know if Shootout would be a better quality picture than FSW? I have digital cable, so would I notice the same improvements as someone with a dish? If the picture quality is definitely better, I would consider the Shootout a worthwhile investment (how could it not be at $49???) regardless of how many DC games FSW carries. I was all set to get the shootout package, until FSW ponied up for broadcast rights. But I think that just gave me a couple of extra weeks leeway.
Not having any options, I watched the FSW broadcast, and I noticed both of those as well. I personally have never been able to stand Max Bretos, but I know a lot of people don't agree with me. One other thing that annoyed me, though. I'm assuming that Bretos and Hopkins were in a studio and just calling the game based on the same crappy feed and camera angles we were watching? The main reason it bugged me was that at the end of each half they said something to the effect of, "We're now into stoppage time" but they never said how much there was going to be (presumably because they didn't know themselves). It was a little frustrating at the end of the second half not knowing how much time was left. Which also reminded me that while it seems like it's been like that for a while, it really hasn't been long at all since the practice of the 4th official holding up the sign with the amount of stoppage time was implemented.
AMEN! Thank god there is a Max Bretos! He really shows a passion for the game and makes it really entertaining to watch. Not only does he show the passion during his announcements but is also very knowledgeable as well. He isn't afraid to critisize a game when it's poorly played as oppose to those two bozos Ty Keough and Rob Stone. I CAN'T STAND TY KEOUGH AND ROB STONE. THEY SUCK!
If they are in the studio and the camera doesn't show the side official holding up the handheld clock, how would they know?
