having the metro out, i have no vested interest in the outcome of games, except for watching some quality soccer and pulling for some of the young american who will be potential national teamers... last night was no disappointment, in fact, its one of the few times i can objectively watch a game and some of the players from the other teams..... but i end up rooting for the team i think deserve to win....and here's what i come up with... san jose - their fans don't show up, they've already won a title and watching a game at spartan is hard, its too small. although you gotta hope landon and graziani do well. and agoos, shut the hell up. just play. columbus - they have the stadium, their fans show up with no double header incentives, etc., and they have a good mix of young and older americans, unlike other teams [cough] dallas [/cough]. only problem i have is their announcer, mcdermott, who is obsessed with the numbers the players wear. new england - if any group of fans deserve wins, its them. they have a great field and when you go there, soccer isn't frowned upon inside the stadium because of the major tenant. plus, the championship is there so it would be good for mls. their fans deserve happiness and they are prob the only fans that suffered more than us. dallas - go get a bunch of more greencards. 6K? go colorado. colorado - great improvement in attendance (regardless of promotions, doubleheaders, etc), they play good footie....i really have no opinion about colorado...they're just there. and pablo, like your world cup teammates, shut up and play. btw you deserved a second yellow. la - great attendance, and they will have an unbelieavable stadium next year. ruiz dives a little much but is still a great finisher. something about vagenas annoys me, maybe his long face. if they win, its good for the league. you gotta love cienfuegos, he's been great for mls. the only thing that really irks me about the team is albright...he's ugly, he "demanded" to play for dc, and he sucks. kansis city - tony, you could've had that ruiz header...all you had to do is dive. any team that mike burns and zavagfag plays for deserves to lose. get a new stadium, and maybe i'll change my mind. plus, they already managed to win the cup. chicago - the atmosphere at naperville is prob the best in the league, so hats off for making that work. i don't like razov so seeing them lose and him depressed would make me happy. they've already won a cup. and i'd rather new england advance, they deserve it more. and curtis is ugly.
If you're talking about last night, you have to mention Chivas toying with Kingsley et al. I heard Kingsley was good, but he got abused all night.
sorry... you're right...curtis isn't ugly....meant curtin...the defender who looks like sideshow bob.
Originally posted by stinky san jose - their fans don't show up, they've already won a title and watching a game at spartan is hard, its too small. I've never quite understood the appeal of Spartan Stadium (and that's because I've never been there)... umm... I guess the stadium itself is nice enough... but the field IS narrow... why is the SJ/SF/Oak area never mentioned for a SSS? After all, what's the big deal about sharing a college stadium for San Jose State? Couldn't the bay area do better/change things around... couldn't get any worse, COULD IT??? columbus - they have the stadium, their fans show up with no double header incentives, etc., and they have a good mix of young and older americans can't argue with that... new england - if any group of fans deserve wins, its them. they have a great field and when you go there, soccer isn't frowned upon inside the stadium because of the major tenant... bingo... haven't been to the new stadium... but the number of fans and the setup at Foxboro makes it a class act. dallas - go get a bunch of more greencards. 6K? go colorado. ... and the 6K was probably inflated... MOVE THE BURN TO NEWARK! God knows you wouldn't even have to add bleachers to that ballpark the Metros were gonna hafta have playoff games at... colorado - great improvement in attendance (regardless of promotions, doubleheaders, etc), they play good footie.... not impressed by double headers or July 4 games but, hey... some of those fans came back... can't argue with that. chicago - the atmosphere at naperville is prob the best in the league, so hats off for making that work. i don't like razov so seeing them lose and him depressed would make me happy. they've already won a cup. and i'd rather new england advance, they deserve it more. and curtain is ugly. Even uglier in person... but he completely surprised me in Dallas in Aug... can put in a solid game... who knew... Have to root for the Fire... but other than that, hope that the Revs get to the final...
Re: Re: from the outside looking in.... I grew up watching soccer there. True, there are more than a few seats that don't have a great view of the entire pitch, but it's kinda cozy... Maybe it's just the nostalgia about the place talking, I don' t know...
Yup. It didn't seem right as I typed it. But in typical bullheaded male fashion, I charged ahead. Thanks for clearing that up. Tell me you see the similarity, though.
Re: Re: from the outside looking in.... it was a wednesday game, no need to be telling us to move to Newark, you cool guy. We had 17,000+ show up for our last home game, babies. Wait till we play L.A. on a Saturday, we'll have a good turn out.
Re: Re: from the outside looking in.... wasn't it albright who said he would not sign unless he could play for dc? or was that olsen? (seriously) btw...there's only one metrotard. he posts regulary.
Olsen said, DCU or Europe. Albright said, DCU, Chicago, or LA, or Europe. Those 3 teams put together trade packages, and Miami accepted DCU's.
Re: Re: from the outside looking in.... To me, there is no appeal to the stadium. As far as SSS, I would assume one big factor is the price of real estate. Buying land in columbus is much cheaper than in Silicon Valley. But hey ... if somebody wants to pony up the dough for Quakes Field, I'm all for it. I'll even start the pot with $20 of my own money. That oughta get things rolling.
sorry, you're right....maybe they can co-win? it just seems that of all the fans, new england fans suffered the most
The Burn play a very open style of soccer. And yes, the attendance was horrible. But I can guarantee that the next game if it is on a Saturday will be much better. Anyway, who said a New York fan would ever been objective?
Re: Re: from the outside looking in.... There's actually a lot not to like. The place is old and run-down looking, no amenities, piss-poor sound system, no jumbotron for replays, the field is narrow and short, and you can't see the corner kicks of throw-ins. Other than that, it's perfect. Seriously, the only really good thing is you are right on top of the players. The farthest seat at the midfield strip is closer than the closest seat at the Rose Bowl, I think. So you can clearly see across the pitch. I think no one talks about a SSS (other than Goodsport!), because the ownership situation has never been stable. Finally early this year Uncle Phil and SVSE are in halvsies (and SVSE still hasn't committed to stay long), so I still doubt anyone makes a run at even trying to build a stadium. That and any available land would be incredibly expensive. There may actually be a great chance going by the wayside. Santa Clara University is planning on building a 5-6K seat SSS soon. I think that SCU, Cyberrays, and Quakes going in together makes sense, but what do I know?
I agree with this, but I don't think I can stomach Danny H. and his humungo ego winning the whole thing. And I'd feel bad for Chronopolous for missing out after he spent 6 1/2 yrs. suffering there. So, I guess I'd have to pick Columbus.
