    Fourth Official: Antonio Damato (ITA)

Thought the Triple Sanction (PK-Red Card-Suspension from next match) that led to Italy's second goal was rather weaksauce. Have no problem with the PK, but thought the Red Card was way too harsh.

Really don't get your thinking mate, if you deem that to be a foul (and thus a PK) then it's one of the easiest DOGSO reds you'll ever find. If that guy doesn't have an OGSO than I don't see who ever would.

Also very possible that the suspension won't matter much as they usually don't carry over from friendlies into competitive matches.

@SirFozzie : is your point that you do not believe the send off was appropriate under current DOGSO law and interpretation, or that you think the particular play is an example of when DOGSO is overly harsh?

As to the first, uh, that is a no brainer of a call . . . as to the second, while I could see limiting DOGSO application to fouls that are otherwise tactical or reckless in nature (and could see this not meeting that criteria), for heaven's sake, when you're behind the attacker in the PA, be careful!!!

If that's not a DOGSO, there's no such thing as a DOGSO.

What's funny is, supporters of the team who were robbed often decry that the triple punishment is not nearly enough while the defense laments the punishment as too severe!

This is DOGSO, period. While at first thought I've considered supporting reducing or eliminating the suspension so it's not triple punishment, further contemplation leads me to believe we need the triple punishment. It's clear that the players don't fear the punishment because they keep doing it. Why reduce the punishment when we haven't eradicated this cynical behavior?*

*I will say that it has gone down, so to say the behavior hasn't modulated somewhat is unfair. But it's certainly still fairly common and this example is the very situation DOGSO is designed to discourage.

Foul (committed by player against opponent who is also a player, on the field of play, while ball is in play).....check - In Penalty area.....check......# of defenders...check - Distance to ball....check - Distance to goal...check - Direction.....check
Clear denial of obvious goal scoring opportunity....check - whistle, spot kick, send off......
Triple threat...World class players know what they are doing. Defender was aware of what was happening and what the punishment would be should the foul be called. If you wish to avoid the triple threat - DO NOT COMMIT THE FOUL!!
You put yourself in the hands of the referee. Should the referee "only" give the PK or PK + Caution ALL the players and coaches will know the official has no "testicular fortitude". The "tripe threat" exists for instances such as this......

The funny part about this "triple punishment," is that they could remove the suspension from the punishment at any time. It's not in the LOTG. Just specify in the ROC that DOGSO doesn't carry a suspension.
