Mike, if you're gonna do PBP, we expect to hear LOTS of praise for you-know-who.

2-0. B-burn soon to exit out of Europe, it seems...

Description of the two goals from a friend:

First one: Through ball catches Rovers out, Friedel comes out to head it clear outside the area, Turk player hits it first time from 30 yards to score.
Second one, through ball, Rovers ball watch, comes into the middle and he slots it past Brad.

It's only the first half man, plus there is a return leg in Blackburn. Don't throw the towel in yet

Well, cue Rosie O'Donnell, man. Epic comeback needed, whether today or in the second leg.

Epic comeback? You gotta be kidding. 2-0 is hardly a mountain and if they can manage to draw withing a goal they'd be in fine shape with a road goal. I hope my doctor doesn't pull the plug as fast as you Buff.

Got off work early - watching the game on Channel 5 (their coverage is as horrible as ever)

Rovers got played off the park - the Turks missed three opportunities (two sitters) before their first went in.

Friedel has been slow off his line twice (even the Channel 5 guys recognized that)

On the first goal Friedel was marginally at fault (he came off his line out of the area to head away a threat) didn't get much on his heading clearance and a splendid half-volley hit the inside of the cross-bar and bounced in - very good shot - weak clearance - but Friedel shouldn't have been put in the position in the first place

Second goal was simply shambolic defending - nothing Friedel could do

Amoruso is having a horrible game - the Turkish keeper went off in stoppage time with what looked like a separated shoulder -

I can do a little PBP in the second half if anyone is interested

    Well, ended 3-1.

B-burn's defense (esp. Amoruso) was burned on the third goal, leaving Friedel little chance to save.

Emerton scored just before the third goal.

Uniteo: I guess I'm on one of those pessmistic days. Anything short of a blinder at Ewood has them out of Europe in the second leg.

2-0 sees them through and 2-0 isn't a tough result, just get 1 and the pressure is REALLY on.

Having said that, I think Blackburn's best days are behind them. They sold more talent than they bought and even last year Friedel was credited with keeping them in games all year. You can't rely on a keeper and expect to make noise in Europe or the EPL.

Ehe....I think Barry Ferguson over David Dunn was an upgrade personally and that Emerton and Amo were solid additions. Duff obviously hurts, what Blackburn needs is a great defender and a great striker and they'd be championship quality, but having a strike force of Man Utd. rejects some days just doesn't quite cut it.

Didn't Rayo Vallecano go pretty deep in the UEFA Cup with Keller in goal and no other players of any international significance?

Dino Baggio made his first start for the club as Barry Ferguson was ineligible after playing for Rangers in the Champions League

Blackburn paid for their sloppy play by conceding two goals in a minute shortly before the interval
Skoko opened the scoring in the 42nd minute by lobbing Friedel from 30 yards after the goalkeeper had headed out a long ball launched by Oz. Then Souleymane Youla added a second goal soon after with a shot into the corner, after being released by Baris.kan.However Blackburn's joy last only three minutes with Youla outstripping Amoruso for his second goal of the game.

Amoruso and Babbel were both finding it hard to handle the pace of Youla

Terrible result for Blackburn. However, they did get an important away goal, and they're not out of it by any means. Of course this all depends on their defending in the return leg. Blackburn really need to explore the winter transfer market for a solid defender. Bocanegra comes to mind and he's out of contract w/MLS in Jan.

    A couple of points.

First, I just read on the Rovers website that Blackburn has never won a UEFA cup match. I didn't realize this, but I guess they got through the first round last year on ties and goal dif. That doesn't sound too promising

Second...though I don't doubt the quality of Boca, Pope, and gang, I think Souness would be better off looking for some 'proven' talent. By this, I mean a player, or players, who have been at the Premier level for some time, if any at all at least. Boca is a great defender, but he is such a risk as well. It could turn out to be a Steven Reid (for now at least) or a Joe Max Moore situation, where they just don't quite have what it takes.

I do agree that Blackburn must do something! Amoruso may be a great asset in corner kicks, but he sucks at straight up defending. Babbel is a great addition, but we need more!

    Hed out

Proven defenders in the EPL come at a high price, which I have no idea how secure B'burn are finacially. That's why I feel Boca would be a great fit to their squad. B'burn could even look for a loanee form one of the top clubs in the EPL. All I knows is that Friedel can't do it all season long again. I think his body maybe feeling some of the effects of last season and he's off to a slower start. I just wonder how long B'burns management will take the poor performances of its defenders. Unfortunately, Souness could get the boot, which is sad because I have the utmost respect for him.

They would be championship quality if those players were maybe Nesta and Vieri, but I think even that would be a stretch. Last year blackburn overachieved and then sold Duff. Its just a shame they couldn't get someone better than a Dwight Yorke last season and couldn't have kept Duff. I'd take Duff and Dunn over Ferguson and the rest of their pickups basically just because I think Duff brings something special that is hard to find while you can easily get a player of about the same quality of an Amoruso or Ferguson if you want one.

Didn't they have a sugar daddy who left them a big bank account upon his death a couple of years ago?
