The Jack Harrison article is really worth reading. We look at academy systems with envy. Here's a mother who saw it as a factory and decided our approach was better for her son. The lesson here may be that a variety of approaches may be the best thing

And if he has real success (ie he advances to all-star type player and gets a transfer back to Europe/makes 7 figures/becomes and NT player or the like), one can imagine a lot of future moms' thinking to be influenced by it.

Agreed, it was a very interesting read and well written. He didn't exactly get a four year college education, but he can always come back later and finish up if the whole soccer thing falls through; plus, being good in the college system here gets you a lot more attention then being good over there in an academy where there's a ton more competition.

And he would have gotten the GenAd college fund to help him out in doing that.

Top trends in sports stadium design: The 'battle for the fan' is on
    Construction Dive.com

    Excerpts:
"Even for those who aren't sports fanatics, today's stadiums, ballparks and arenas are so amenity-rich and well-designed that they have the potential to turn just about anyone into a fan of the local team."

"Tingle added, "There's also a lot more standing room now in newer stadiums, and even some of the older ones are being renovated to that point." In some venues, ticketholders can go to an in-house bar or restaurant and still be able to see the field. Seating design also takes the type of fan into consideration, Ewing noted. For example, soccer fans tend to stand up more than other sports fans, so seating for soccer stadiums can be designed to prevent issues related to line of sight."

"... encouraging fans to connect to the world via social media isn't just about showing them a good time. Ewing said it also represents the ultimate marketing move. After all, while attendees are tweeting and posting about what a great time they're having, their friends and family are ideally thinking they don't want to be left out of the action, so there is an increased likelihood they'll join their friends at the next game, Ewing noted. At the game, smartphone users can also receive targeted ads for deals on food and discounts for future game tickets.

Major League Soccer franchise Sporting KC in Kansas City, MO, encourages its fans, at the game and elsewhere, to upload to social media in exchange for points that can be redeemed for novelty items, food cards or other incentives, according to Ewing. Even though the stadium holds 20,000 people, team officials can document more than 140,000 people during a game taking part through social media. "That is taking place all over," Ewing said. Tingle added that the social media push has also changed the composition of many teams' front offices to employees who are social media savvy."

The Current NT coach sent his kid to Cal, a place he wasn't even a starter.

A lot of Parents (I can't say all) will choose what is best for their kid. Fans and Coaches choose whats best for them.

MLS Homegrown deal has been good, but some teams have been poor with helping themselves and the kids. But teams are learning, just see FCD and NYRB who made a few mistakes but learned.

Stay in Europe Thibaut Curtois. MLS does not want or need you when you are old and washed up. If i was Garber, every time I heard a player say he'd like to "retire" to MLS, I would make sure that player never plays a minute in this league.

The only thing stupider than a 24 year old talking about "retiring to MLS someday" is an editor who thinks that a comment regarding a fantasy signing 10 years or more from now is somehow newsworthy.
