How far is the misuse of the "question begging" expression going to go? It's "only" a blog, but it's a blog on a site trying to be a major sports news site. Presumably they're supposed to have standards. I guess the ship has truly sailed, though. It's now a cliche that means "raises the question" or "demands the further question be asked." Even the Times is misusing it. Grumble grumble, get off my lawn, etc...
While true, I find that attendance is becoming more important as a image/brand building exercise as TV contracts and sponsorships meet a clubs financial needs. I tend to roll my eyes whenever someone mentions how attendance is not important, with quips like "I'm watching the game, not the people in the stands." Whether or not people want to admit it, a full stadium or arena adds value to what you're watching by a significant amount. The image it creates is one of importance, and the minute you see empty seats that begins to erode. I would, in earnest, rather watch QPR vs Crystal Palace in front of 19,000 at Loftus Road than Real Madrid vs Manchester United infront of 70,000 in a 100k stadium. Maybe I have some neuroses, but I find it would take away from the experience. Generally I would think that most leagues prefer sell out crowds, but this is part of the reason why watching some baseball or basketball games is a task in itself. Poor crowd involvement coupled with empty seats/sections is a huge turnoff.
Refresh my memory, didn't the Sonics bolt before the Sounders entered MLS? So, that wouldn't quite be "the same situation," now would it?
And "should of/would of/could of" is another misuse. The correct spelling is "should've/would've/could've", but because both versions phonetically sound similar, people think the correct spelling is with the "of". It is understable how they may make that mistake, but still, every time I come across it I want to put my hands into the screen and strangle their neck.
