I'm surprised Direct TV isn't involved in this as they are a sponsor of MLS but this quote jumps out to me. “Since we kicked off our partnership with Apple and MLS earlier this year, we’ve seen a great response from customers. They’re enjoying MLS 360 and tuning in to the integrated match channels consistently week after week,”
The lesser Wright-Phillips is claiming that MLS rules need to change because he saw young players go to college rather than turn pro when he played in the league . . . which was 2016. I hope MLS acts on this urgent news! Hey Garber -- Sound the alarum! Summon the shire-reeve! Wake the beadle!
Not sure why BWP is barking about this now. It is true, that if you go back to the early days of MLS, Mike Fisher, Hermann Trophy winner, was drafted by Tampa Bay but decided to go to med school instead. Money played a role in that decision. Even 10 years ago, the money for the bottom roster slots was limited. Today, each player still has to decide if what MLS offers is enough for them to sign. That hasn't changed. What I think has changed is the money. I think the money on offer for youth players is enough to entice players to give their soccer dreams a shot and put med school, college or other plans on hold for a while. Somebody could correct me, but I think minimum salary in MLS is $80k and I think teams get incentives to sign homegrowns. That seems like enough to entice a young player to sign.
It's SWP, not the MLS 360 commentator. Yeah not sure when 100K+ a year became "not a good living." Now if we're talking about USL...... he'd have a point.
