WashPost: Freddy Adu, Waterboy http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A27111-2004Feb9.html Adu, whose family emigrated from Ghana to Potomac in 1997 and is already the highest-paid player in MLS, received much encouragement from his buddies -- "Go, Freddy; Don't be nervous, Freddy" -- and when United Coach Peter Nowak and assistant Tommy Soehn finally arrived, Adu jogged over to greet them, sharing a few jokes before the rest of the team showed up. "Where were you guys? I've been sitting here for hours," Adu said in mock bewilderment, before lugging the water jugs to the field as any smart rookie would.
This is what I was concerned about. Great coverage on Freddy's every move, not a word about what happened during practice. I want to read about the team, as well as the individual players. There is more information regarding the Metro*#*#*#*#*#*#s than there is regarding DC United's practice. It was still an intersting article and a good read. I just hope we can still follow the team...
I'm shocked the amount of coverage Adu is getting. Complain if you want, but this is the media selling the sport to the masses. The masses want to know what this Adu is all about. Maybe down the road they'll want details of practice. But, right now, the story line is a little kid who is making it big.
Come on, Andy, do you have to invent stuff to bitch about? Last year there is no way the Post sends a reporter to FL to cover preseason training. So this year they pay someone to travel with the team and the first article is a "cute" piece about Freddy and you aren't happy.....what a freakin' shock. I guess it wouldn't be Bigsoccer without mindless bitching.
Two days on the front page of the Sports section is nothing to sneeze at... even though it's Adu-centric ... I'll take it. Little soccer coverage is better than no soccer coverage and Adu coverage is better than no DCU coverage at all... especially in early FEBRUARY!!!
But I bet you're in better shape...although he could take you at Ping Pong though. So, if Moreno is back, does that mean we now have the best table tennis team in MLS?
It's not surprising to hear that Tino and Moreno are good ping pong players because they both seem to be incapable of hitting anything into a net.
I see that Alegria made it on time this year. It seems that he usually has problems coming back from Peru every year.
Does this mean we have to worry about Jaime missing time because of call ups to Bolivia's Davis Cup team? Sachin
ARRRGGGHHHHH.... my eyes. Couldn't Nowak have stuck the team in a tanning booth or something first? That's just painful. Sachin
Hey guys, we are going to be on the paper, everybody put on the white shirts and stand next to the black guy.
My sister is taking her kids to as many of the training sessions as she can. All three of them (boys) play in Bradenton youth leagues. They got a signed Freddy Adu ball for Christmas. My sister and brother-in-law know John Hackworth, the U-17 asst coach, and I think they got the ball through him. Hackworth also coaches a U-9 team in a local Bradenton league, and my sister is trying to get my youngest nephew on his team. I hope she does. All three of them love the game, but the youngest one is the most talented soccer player. He's 7, but thinks he's 17.
LaCanfora does a nice job with these Adu stories. I guess he would rather cover Freddy than the Caps. Can't say I blame him!
I'm ultra-enthused about the coverage for DC United and soccer in general thus far. 2 days and 4 big fat articles. 1 concerning Jaime, 1 concerning the U-23's and 2 more concerning DC United and Adu fitting in. Once again, I'm going to say that we all need to be writing the Post and thanking them profusely for the coverage. I don't think we all have any idea how much the media plays a role in how different ideas are perceived, and then how those perceptions then turn to reality. Let's give a little credit here where it is due. Great articles, and I'm waiting intently for the season to start now. I actually have next week off, and my parents live in between tampa and bradenton, but i have already committed to seeing my 5 yr old nephew in Atlanta and can't back out now. otherwise ....................... but oh well, there is always Charleston in March!
