    That's one sweet scissors kick.

The thing about Adu isn't so much his height, it's his skill. He's only so-so tall for a 13 year old. But the skill can be scary. Maradona was always short for his age, but legend says that when he was 12 he tried out for a youth team and his skill was so good the coaches thought he must be a 20 year old midget.

The story says January 6 issue. Does that mean it will be in the print version of Newsweek?

i think so, i was talking to nancyb earlier... she said most of his soccer stuff never did... but neither of us could recall if they had dates on them like this one does

i don't think they had dates before, and even if they did... i'm not sure why it wouldn't have the actual date, instead of a future issue's date

    my 2 cents

“I see him do things I haven’t seen the pros do,” says [Under-17 coach John] Ellinger.

Look, I hope this kid has a great career, but he's 13. I think our national team coaches should be a bit more diplomatic in their comments about anyone that young.

for the most part, i'm right there with ya (hell check the thread with me being mad at soccer america in mls n&a)

it's just that we get articles like these and then you gotta wonder, and besides... this kid has been
at bradenton for a year now, and as they said... is the youngest there by 2 years... and he is one of their best players!!

notable people that have come from there and gone directly pro are donovan, beasley, quaranta, convey, capano, mapp, etc.

ellinger does have the track record to know what he is talking about... and remember, ac milan offered ~$750k for him at twelve... these people aren't fools

but you are right, we shouldn't be pinning world beater status on him... and i think that's going to be an incredibly hard thing not to do...

people see something and they want it to become true... expections can be cruel in how impossible the fans make them based on the mere notion that something *might* happen

it's a hard line to walk... expectations and what is

but we at least should wait til after he needs to shave more than once a month

but one thing i was very glad to see, was the comment from wahl (see his recent SI column) on the academy... they do appear to have the chance to be kids with the tennis academy kids (and they are also preparing to jump into pro sports at a very young age)

this is actually in newsweek's print edition

it's part of a set of people that newsweek has dubbed "the top newsmakers of 2003"

another winner of this "award" is avril lavigne... so go figure

    ;)

I can't wait to get a chance to see him play but does all this remind anybody else of one LeBron James? God I hope he doesn't start calling himself King Freddy

no, so far no one seems to be doing everything they can to make a buck off freddie... they're simply amazed... he's even in the right place to push him towards the goal of being a pro... bradenton

he's already been offered a pro contract and his mother turned it down, there is no waiting for him to be old enough to get get the money, he and his mother have chosen this path for him

james has to do his, and deal with less than honorable people in the process

It seems like this kid has been 12 or 13 for like 4 years now...

Will he be old enough to compete in the Olympics? Don't you have to be like over 15 or something?

The kid seems like he's good. Haven't seen him though so I don't know.

Does anybody else find simply amazing that a 13 year old soccer player is getting this much attention in the US? I just keep wondering if he is actually that good or there is something else going on.

no, money is news and this kid has been offered serious money

    and turned it down

he's the real deal (talent wise)... whether or not he develops is an entirely different story... but he deserves the hype based on that

and as i said before... bradenton does have a damn good track record of producing talent, and this kid is being seen as better than anything before him (from there)

it sure gives hope, but it's hope and nothing to bank on

all we can do is wait and hope... let him be for now

I know there's one for the UEFA cup, so there's possibley one for the world cup, youngest person ever to play was a 16 year old from N Ireland iirc.

no idea, but fifa's not too concerned about the olympics... which is why it's a u-23 competition with 3 age exceptions... and many countries don't really give a hoot about it (and many do give a hoot... like us)

    Best part of the article:

“I can’t wait to put on this country’s uniform for real,” he says. “I feel like I’m an American kid now.”

Have you seen him play? Do you know how mature he is for his age? Do you think he lacks pressure already or has never encountered it? Different courses for different horses.

That's how you do it??? Anyway, I think we will really get a good idea of how good he can be this summer in the U-17's. If he graduates when he is 15, and plays in the MLS when he is 16...he could be the kind of player that could make that league.

i don't see freddie being in mls very long at all

if he plays in it... i could see them breaking the 16 year old rule for him, just so he plays here

this kid isn't donovan, if he does play up to what he's said to be able to, he won't need to play here to be a big fish

oh yeah, he's still not a u.s. citizen, so don't count on him for even being able to be asked to play the championships this summer

unless this story is a sign of his mom getting her citizenship soon

I agree. He might be even better, but what I think one way he could be better than Donovan is charisma. Donovan's gotten his posterboy status from looks, youth, and skill. He's never impressed me with his interview presence. Adu, on the other hand, has a killer smile, a completely upbeat attitude, and seems engaging in what he says and how he says it. Maybe Freddy'll have his chance to pout about whether he's able to stay in the US to play, but until then, I'll be watching him to shine as a personality as well as a player. In that sense, he could be a really big kick for US soccer.
