    Does it ever work?

No, really. Has he ever successfully pulled it off at the international level?

    Just wondering.

Let's wait until it's completed before we rush to judgment.

He does it at the wrong time and he does it too far away from the defender. So funny that there is a thread about it because during the game last night I thought what a waste of a move. My U12 girls team can pull off better step-overs than Heydude.

My personal view is that step-over moves by any player (including Denilson) rarely work. They just look good to the eyes.

I don't agree with that. I've seen Ronaldo,Zidane, Ronaldinho, etc use them to good success. Besides using them to go past people, the move freezes defenders just long enough to get a cross or pass off.

Funny...I had the same thought. In my mind, it's kind of like a nervous or subconcious tick you may have. You don't know why you do it, you just do it! It provide no benefits and people look at you funny...

My favorite Frankie move is the hard run up the line, immediately followed by always reversing course and passing the ball back to a central defender to boot it long...........

Razov put one on Kenny Arena last Saturday. I think Kenny's still looking at the turf where the ball was before Ante rippled the net.

The trick with the stepover is you actually have to have exhibited some sort of potential danger to begin with. If I were opposing teams and Frankie had the ball I would pull off all defenders and let him have a free run in at the goal. Near the goal he would either shank the ball into the stands or pass it to the opposing team, so encouraging him to go all the way is actually a fool proof defensive tactic.

Also, as others pointed out, he typically does the stepover like 10 yards from the nearest defender or when caught in a double team with nowhere to go? What is that? It's like a nervous tick or something. He knows he isn't going anywhere so he busts into the Electric Boogaloo. At times I was expecting him to drop to the ground and do the Caterpillar.

In short Frankie, it is bad enough for us that you are on the field. Please do not embarass us further with your Sunday rec league stepovers. Play defense and if you do find yourself with the ball just pass it back to Howard so we can start over.

I think that's what bothers me the most about his step over move. It looks so bad. It's like he's trying to step on a cricket.

Robinho did an 8x step over move in the 2002 Brazilian Championship final match in which at the 8th step over in a row he was foulded in the box and given a penalty. That goal gave Santos the title. It worked there.

It works, but only if the defender is so scared of getting beat hes jumping out of his skin every time ballhandler twitches. If hes not panicking then it has 0 chance.

Columbian guy tried to do it to Oughton, Oughton just stared at the guy until the Columbian guy got bored and passed off.

If anyone has a chance, catch the video of this thing. Ungodly!

Basically, when you do it as good as Robinho, it becomes an excellent way of protecting the ball. You might think that all you have to do is forget about all the legs and just concentrate on the ball and tackle it away when it gets to you, but when someone has Robinho's level of skill, he'll let it roll as long as pososible until you make a move for it, when you do, that's when he'll give it a slight nudge and knock it half a foot out of the reach of the tackle. You'll either foul him, or he'll sail right by you.

Needless to say Frankie doesn't have that move. I won't mention the name of the only current American I've seen who might be able to pull it off at that level. :)

Razov did in fact school Kenny with a stepover move last week. Wynalda didn't mince any words in his analysis as to why Kenny thought Razov was going anywhere but to his favored left.

I believe for Brazil's equalizer against England in the 2002 World Cup, Ronaldinho used the step over to freeze Ashley Cole (????) and feed Rivaldo for the score.

Just found the video, and yeah he does only one stepover but it was at a dead sprint with the ball and BADLY fooled Ashley Cole, a second later Brazil had equalized.

Can you post that video and then does anyone have one of Frankie's for comparison purposes?

I often find that without real examples, we're talking about different things.

On the level that I play, it works maybe 1% of the time, except when Ronaldo shows up.

    I wanna see Robinho's 8x stepover. That'd beat Denilson's that was about 4-5.

    That is very funny. -----^

I think this thread has shown that the stepover has potential. It just happens to be one of those things you don't have to be any good at to attempt (read: Hejduk).

Has anyone noticed how many times he's actually been beaten (as the defender) by a stepover. I haven't, but maybe that's some insight for an attacker, Hejduk fears the stepover.

I missed most of the Brazil game 'cause Frankie kept throwing that step-over.

    Jacked my neck, too.
