It seems that St. Gallen wants to be compensated for the potential loss of Frankie. It gets complicated due to his loan from Bayer. Any idea if Bayer payed for his contract, or did St. Gallen have to foot the bill. Here is the link:http://www.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=127814&cpid=218&title=Hejduk+move+being+hampered
Any information on why didn't Frankie Hejduk survive with one of the bottom teams in the Swiss league? Was it just a bad fit, or is he really not up to that level? If the latter, I'd say his prospects in MLS shouldn't be much higher.
From my understanding there was friction with the coach, and never got off the ground. When St. Gallen lost to FC Wil 11-3 earlier in the year, Frankie played a good game, but the team wnet to pieces around him. The team gave a public apology in the newspaper that Frankie signed thinking it was something else. In other words he did not read what he was signing, never a good idea. It got published, then Frankie went on record saying that he was not sorry for the game because he played hard and well. This rubbed some people the wrong way, expecially the coach. Who started to use him less and less. With four games left, Frankie got a Red Card while not playing. He was on the bench and as the teams walked into the locker rooms at half-time he said something to the ref, who red-carded him. The coach then suspended him for the rest of the first part of the season. That coach is now gone, he was fired and the coach of FC Wil the team that beat the 11-3 was brought in. This change could have been the think that St. Gallen, and Frankie needed. Also St. Gallen released quite a few players this break, but Frankie was not one of them. I think that Frankie would play a greater role if he were to stay in St. Gallen. That is a quick run-down of the Frankie saga in St. Gallen. I think he can play, and will help whichever MLS team gets him.
Thanks, Rob. Very informative rundown on the situation. Sure hope Surfer lands some place he gets a lot of playing time--even if that's right there in St. Gallen under the new coach.
From what I can gather from my limited German and the AltaVista Babel Fish, Frankie is not currently training with St. Gallen, but seems to be headed for Columbus. If you can read German: http://www.tagblatt.ch/sport.cfm?pass_id=737574&liste=737564,737572,737582,737561,737562,737567,7375 Here is the Babel Fish Translation: "The search for new clubs proves however as difficult. Daniel Sereinig nevertheless trains at present with the FC work living. And the Brazilian Jefferson is in his homeland and holds conversations with some associations. With Frankie Hejduk, which had not returned to the winter break no more to pc. Gallen, seems to appear a solution. The American is to stand briefly before the change to the US professional league team Colombo crew. (ms) "
Babelfish didn't do such a bad job this time, but here's my translation anyway: ------------------------------------- FC St. Gallen is currently looking for solutions for the five players who no longer fit into Peischl’s concept and were therefore released prior to the start of training. The search for new clubs is proving difficult, however. Daniel Sereinig is at least training with FC Schaffhausen at the moment. Brazilian Jefferson is currently involved in discussions with a number of clubs in his native country. A solution appears to be at hand for Frankie Hejduk, who did not return to St. Gallen following the winter break. The American is apparently about to be transferred to U.S. professional league team Columbus Crew. --------------------------------------
Thanks for the translation. I got the basic idea from Babelfish, but it was nice to get the details. Looks like Hejduk is all but a member of the Crew.
The legal/money questions must have been regulated. Here is an article saying that Frankie has been released by St. Gallen. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=256154&cc=5901 Lets hope the next American in Switzerland gets a better chance to play. I wish Frankie well.
Looks like the paperwork has been resolved and Frankie's ready to play for the Crew. Hope he sees more time on the field than he did in Europe... http://sports.yahoo.com/mls/news?slug=hejduksigns&prov=st&type=lgns
