With Frankie being relegated to the reserve team with his Swiss club does anyone think MLS is in his future? If so he would be a good fit for the Earthquakes playing out wide in the back.If the Grazianni move freed up enough cash this move would be a win/win situation.Frankie gets to play near an ocean and the quakes get a versatile workhorse.

Marc Connolly addressed this in the following article on espn.com:

I think he'll end up in Columbus. It kinda slipped under the radar that they've trimmed roster and salary numbers and are one of the few teams that can fit a well-paid player on their roster without having to move someone.

I don't think he'll be useful in MLS.

He needs to be surrounded by outstanding players because what he offers is basically hustle and speed, not skill or understanding.

You can hide his shortcomings on the USMNT when he's surrounded by OBrien, Reyna and Mastoeni, but not in MLS.

Personally, I don't want to see his gay-ass "skank dance" goal celebration anywhere NEAR Spartan Stadium.

LOL, that's funny, but speed kills in this league,I'd take him over Russell, but if the Crewless want him, well at least i know LD is gonna score!

You guys are nuts if you wouldn't want this World Cup experienced defender on our team at right back.

Can you imagine playing on the left side of an opposing team with Russell running at you then having Frankie doing an overlapping run? Who's going to stop that? He fits perfectly into our system, and we need improvement at right back. I think we should try to get him. Didn't Frank actually play with him at Tampa early in the league's history?

    Frankie - Goos - Dayak - Wade

    Russell - M'rony - Ekel - Lagos

    Donovan - DeRo

And you're overrating Hejduk. I've never been convinced he belonged on the USMNT. And, if you saw him play in the Bundesliga, he didn't do much and rode lots of pine.

Yes, he did play with Yallop in TB. And, yes, he MIGHT be better than what we have.

But there's really no point tripping about it either way, because he isn't coming here anyway. Except as a visiting player. And I'd be more than a little dismayed if it turns out we had let Graz go "to free up some cap space" just to sign this cluck.

    Wow.

And all we needed to do was dump Ariel and pick up Frankie.

    :D

I think that is a even swap.

Especially as a defender, although he is better than Conrad i wouldn't waste a bunch of $$$ on him. We couldn't win WITH Graziani, we're definately a worse team without him. How are we gonna get better? Hejduk isn't gonna cut it unless he comes real cheap, which i doubt. This team needs to put some faith in Robinson and clear some more cap space(Agoos), and pick up another starting impact player.

Wow. That's a mature, well-thought and educated opinion.

Hejduk isn't as good or as bad as the posts have stated. He would be a decent right back for the Quakes if we didn't have such a small home pitch and we could afford him.

He'd certainly be an impact player for the Quakes, but he couldn't work here. It doesn't matter anyway since he's most likely going to Columbus.

Well, I'm not so sure I'm overrating him. Bruce thought he was good enough and he played quite a bit in Korea, and France.

I think he would fit well in FY's system, which in the year in which we won the trophy, emphasized width and getting the outside backs into the attack (see Zak Ibsen- now gone.) When we lost Cerritos, we an aerial threat that Graziani was not.

Can we get that width back? With Frankie we would have it on both sides - not just on the left with Wade.

If we can get him under the cap, it's worth it b/c we were always going to have to drop Graz this year.

The ONLY reason Cerritos got any header goals is because he was rarely marked as tightly as Graziani or Donovan. An aerial threat would be a guy like McBride or Eddie Robinson, guys that can win a 50/50 ball in the air. Cerritos' header goals were all finishes on sitters just like his goals by the foot.

At least he puts them in. Cerritos was/is very good in the air. He's got ups. I think you're wrong about the marking - Donovan almost certainly was marked tighter but Cerritos does an outstanding job of finding space.

    a goal is a goal...sitter or not....

One of Cerritos's strong suit is his ability in the air....

and I can remember Ronald scoring in a few other ways than the aforementioned sitters...

and outside of LD's header vs. Mexico, how many other goals does he score with his head? his corner assignment is to get in the keeper's way....

Robinson: two goals, one with his head, one with his foot....

    Re: Re: Frankie Hedjuk

That's all true, and they supposedly want him, but Columbus will have to trade for an allocation to get him.

    Re: Re: Re: Frankie Hedjuk

That's assuming it'll take an allocation to get him. I'm not certain anyone will use an allocation on him.

See 01/07/03: "Ivan Gazidis Speaks on the Allocation Process" at mlsnet.com for a breakdown of how U.S. National Team players "coming home" would be acquired.

    The bulk of it is:
FYI - #4 has been used in the signing of Gilles Grimandi.

The "reverse order of finish from 2002" priority would be as follows:
    1. D.C.
    2. Metrostars
    3. K.C.
    4. Chicago
    5. Dallas
    6. San Jose
    7. Columbus
    8. Colorado
    9. New England
    10. Los Angeles

It's unlikely Columbus would see him drop past three allocations, plus all the way to seventh in the non-allocation "draft". They would probably have to swing some sort of deal to get him, but why not make a deal that makes a lot of sense for both teams and has kind of been hinted at (see last sentence of this Steven Goff piece in the Washington Post, 01/07/03): "Former United captain John Harkes, with Columbus the past two seasons, also might become available." How? The Crew trade Harkes to United in exchange for United exercising its non-allocation first priority to "draft" Hejduk and shipping him to Columbus.

It's also possible that something less elaborate takes place: Columbus "discovers" him or he does drop to #7 in the non-allocation "draft".
