US U-20 qualifying squad member Frankie Amaya ('00 midfielder) was the first pick in the MLS SuperDraft today by FC Cincinnati. Amaya is on a Generation Adidas contract. From an article on the league website: "The sources said that Cincinnati have no intention of moving Amaya within MLS, but they said there’s a chance he could be sent on loan – potentially to Mexico – for parts of 2019."
A developmental loan to Mexico? They should reach out to Jose Villarreal and Sebastian Saucedo for comment.
Amaya likely to be sold to Toluca: BREAKING: Toluca nearing a deal to sign Frankie Amaya from the New York Red Bulls, per sources.Deal will be around $4m. Nothing totally done yet. Amaya expected to play Saturday for RBNY.https://t.co/LKzfn5uCxm— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) June 20, 2024
Is there a chart somewhere that tracks sales out of MLS per year (divided by # of teams to make comparisons better)? It seems to me that there was a jump over about 18 months that kicked in pretty recently.
I think MLS finally realized that in order to properly grow as a league they needed to develop young talent and then sell for decent profit. Now if only they could get the Mckennies and Pulisics to commit as well that profit margin would increase dramatically. Maybe with Quinn Sullivan and Julian Hall that is starting to change, but access to a Euro passport probably also plays a factor.
They realized that over 15 years ago when they started academies. It was always going to take some time. But a lot of talent has come through the academies over the past decade. When FCD lost out on Weston, it was a huge moment. Top homegrowns are now offered deals at 15-16. Not too many homegrowns get away, which is good. The whole academy system falls apart if teams don't get to sign their best academy players. If that approach had been in place back then, McKennie would have signed with FCD at 16 and have been sold around 19.
