From what I heard Gus did a pretty good job.
By 2018 he should be better.

It was just that when you worded it, it seems like you kept the package but dropped a single channel from that package:
....My friends now know you can drop bein from your sports package and some of them have other friend

Exactly. We assume Dave O'Brien and others got decrees from their bosses to cater to an audience who doesn't know a whole lot about soccer and to keep things as simple as possible.

If Gus doesn't get those same orders, remember, he has done some San Jose Earthquakes games, so it's not like he's totally new.

Also can someone send out a warning (maybe a separate thread) of the matches that fox is going to let Gujo (haha) call.

Haha....Give "GuJo" a chance mate, he will be the most sought after European football commentator in the world by 2018... Heck, Martin Tyler got his start calling the European cup winners cup final way back when....

Freaking 2013 and these ahole wanna-be execs actually think there is a remote chance of convincing a substantial number of the 67% populace without a passport to become subscribers to a "soccer" channel. Good luck with that..

    I'll PM you...

    Cheers

I think i worded it to the best of my ability but sorry if i mis-communicated.

Yes, i kept the package (dropped it completely yesterday) so i could still have access to FSW. Let's think about it for a second..If i had the package prior to the inclusion of bein @ a certain rate, then bein was added @ an increased rate, i should be able to remove that addition and revert to my original rate. Its really that simple, you just need to talk to someone that understands the customer is the key to long term viability. It can be done by "checking or unchecking" a dialogue box on a computer screen. Even ray or phil can manage that without an orgasm..I kid ray...

    Cheers.

Well, it's okay for Johnson to be calm for 89 minutes, but the reason he's intriguing as a soccer announcer is that when something dramatic happens, he has the ability to let loose in the way that made Bill Simmons endorse the suggestion that he be brought in as a "closer" for exciting college basketball games. You certainly want him to bring that excitement when it's appropriate.

Plus, this is soccer. This is the sort of thing he's up against on Spanish radio:

    I thought Gus was ok.

Martin Tyler - absolutely would have loved to have had him.

    Unfortunately wasn't so.

Halftime in the Arsenal / Munich match -- and I think Johnson is showing definite promise.

Clearly has a ways to go and misinterprets many smaller details -- refs decisions, crowd reactions, players intentions, etc. But he is definitely allowing the game to flow, with a minimal amount of space-filling nonsense and a nice respect for simply calling the play ("Wilshere... Arteta... Dante stepping in..." etc.)

Given a lack of a perfect world and having to choose between novices mistakes and verbal restraint vs. in-depth knowledge and constant chatter-for-chatter sake, I think I just might take the former.

Early days of course (and who knows, once he becomes more comfortable maybe he'll never shut up....)

I had the misfortune of hearing him on my radio today. I heard "interception by bayern" and decided it was time for some music. Im fortunate to have fse with the sap option which i put on as soon as i got home!

If we assume Ian Darke will either stick with ESPN or follow the premier league to NBC, and remembering that Martin Tyler will be 72 for the 2018 World Cup, can anyone put forth a name other than Gus Johnson who has the talent and reasonable name recognition to be groomed as the lead voice of Fox World Cup? Andres Cantor didn't exactly take the world by storm when he narrated in English briefly.

My pick would be Rob Palmer, except nobody's ever heard of him.

I prefer Kevin Keatings over Rob Palmer. Sadly he is stuck behind Rob Palmer in the pecking order for Sky's La Liga coverage.

Maybe it's his microphone level or my 5.1, but I can hardly hear Gus at all. He is certainly letting the game breath and he is doing anything but babble on via the "American method" of "dead air is bad."

Like I said earlier, as long as he doesn't get any directives from higher up, I foresee good things. Of course, he won't please everyone because he doesn't have a British accent, but variety is the spice of life.

Yes, crowd audio levels were a bit loud, but that made it more nerve- racking and exciting in my experience.

What's wrong with "interception"? It's a fine English word that everyone understands.

I agree completely. This is just nitpicking at this point. He is a million times better than O'Brien and he's only done a handful of games.

I am impressed by how much silence there is from Gus. I didn't think he had it in him to give up his schtick.

its very apparent Mr. Johnson does not know the rules.. at times where he should commentating on fouls.. there is an awkward silence... you would think that someone who took a year off to "learn" about the game would have cracked the FIFA rule book.. maybe he was too busy studying down at the local pub...cause he doesnt know squat. This was worse than last week.. he looked more nervous in the pre/post interview.. and why so stiff?... cue Ray.. ask question.. respond with factoid that has nothing to do with Rays answer.. did you see Gus' face when Ray started going into tactics and formation... classic.. Gus- inject factoid --QUICK

I still dont understand why people here accept crap and a lesser broadcast.. and are fine with it.. an american voice will not grow the sport or help it get new fans.. the sideshow is nearly over and the Gujo fanboys will go back to watching basketball, baseball and the like.. they wont stay on for Johnson.. so we will be left with this crap going to school for the FA CUP and Champions leage final..
    nice... FOX ...

that being said.. found a good BT site.. downloaded the SKY content.. was very happy.. I skimmed thru the Fox broadcast to see if Johnson improved.. NOPE

just wait till Sunday.. people will be tuning in to see the TWI feed.. and will get a surprise.. Lee Dixon is absolute crap as a co commentator.. so he will be out in the cold on this one.. I expect number 3 to be the worse yet.

Watching Arsenal v Bayern via my DVR right now. Gus is poisoning the game. He misses absolutely everything and says the wrong things pretty routinely.

I think the minimum requirement for a commentator is that they know the sport they are covering.

Why us this such a big ask?
