From the linked article, I presume Wicky is from Germany. Any additional information would be useful.

Wicky is Swiss. I'm sure wikipedia has quite a bit of info on the guy, he's had a pretty decent career.

Can any Swiss friends translate this article or atleast the main points? I'm curious why only a year contract.

    Re: Raphael Wicky to Chivas

    from wikipedia:

Wicky has played for Werder Bremen, Atlético Madrid, and Hamburger SV after his first spell at FC Sion. He was part of the Swiss national teams at Euro 96 and Euro 2004 as well as at the 2006 World Cup. He signed again for Sion after he lost his place in the first team at Hamburger SV.

He's only 30, could prove to be a decent signing.

    Re: Raphael Wicky to Chivas

Or German :D , the article basically says:
He only made 5 appearances with FC Sion, due to several injuries. He trained in Los Angeles over the summer, had been a target of Preki's. Hes the 3rd swiss player to play in American soccer(according to the article) and hes got a one year deal with an option for a 2nd. Then a quick blurb on Chivas USA's history.

Sounds like a good signing to me. International experience, relatively young, not a DP. I love the South American invasion but it's nice to switch it up too.

    He's a decent defensive midfielder, good passer, smart ... a left-footer too.

Not sure about the Crew, but he almost came to Chivas USA last season. I don't remember why it didn't happen.

    Re: Raphael Wicky to Chivas

Perhaps a mod can change the title to:

    - Former Swiss International Raphaël Wicky to Chivas USA -

Wicky only played five games for FC Sion in the first half of the season due to injury. I wonder what kind of shape he is in right now. A healthy Wicky could be an important contributor to Chivas. He is a skilled defensive midfielder that can also play in defense.

Wicky has good technique but don't expect him to be a flashy player...

And Shaka Hislop, and Avery John . . .

Glad to see Wicky sign; I wish Sutter hadn't of gotten injured with Dallas. He was a good signing back in the day, even with his pirate bandana (that was him right?)?

Is Wicky still playing on the Swiss national team? If so, would he be the only MLS player that would be lost for the Euro Cup this summer? Żurawski would have been another one for Poland, but that's the only one I can think off.....

According to Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland_national_football_team#Current_squad), he was not named to the Swiss squad that will face England on Feb 6, 2008. He perhaps was left from the squad for the same reason Beckham was left out of England's squad (lack of match fitness).

Wicky's Most Recent Call up was v. Kazakhstan, 2 June 2007.

He has 75 total Swiss Caps.

Don't know if he's in the picture to be included for Euro2008, but I imagine at age 30 (31 by this summer), he potentially could be with his national team when they co-host the tournament (from 7 to 29 June 2008).

    Read the thread title. ;)

No, he's no longer in the national team picture. He has been pushed aside by our younger players like Inler (Udinese) or Fernandes (Man City). Wicky knows this, he wouldn't have signed for Chivas if he still had a chance of making the Euro 2008 roster. Part of the reason he didn't sign for Chivas in the summer was to stay in the picture by playing in Switzerland. Then came the injuries and now it's too late. I don't see him returning to the NT, we got enough (younger) talent in his position.
    Kazakhstan? Make that Argentina.

Wasn't he still under contract with that Germain team last summer? As I understand it that's the reason he didn't come as the Germans wanted a transfer fee.
