Former Revs: Where are they now?

I've been away for a while, so I missed this one.

Dahir was truly a good guy, one who I got the sense was just enjoying every moment he had as a pro, taking nothing for granted. I remember when all the other writers were talking to the goal scorers, etc. so I chatted with Dahir. He was a very smart guy, he had a degree in international relations. I don't remember how this came up, but we were talking about how the World Bank/IMF should be doing more to help developing countries, and Richard Goulooze came over and was like, "whut the hell are you guys talking about!?"

The Revs signed him when he scored the winning goal in the Open Cup for the Long Island RoughRiders. His other career highlight was getting into a bit of argy-bargy with Lalas, and Lalas called him "a punk." So for the next POCM issue, Photoshop Master Alan LaValley created a pic of Dahir with a mohawk, leather jacket, safety pins and a chain with a padlock as a necklace!

 

I wouldn't have minded having him back - only issue I saw with him was his durability.

 

He costs an international slot. I feel like we need to be getting more return on investment from our limited resources than what he provided at his cost.

Not good enough to start and not reliable enough to be a key bench piece

 

Since he is in Greece he changed his name to Gyro Gil

Too bad, I kind of liked the guy. Now that has to change.

 

Former Revs Bruce Arena, Shalrie Joseph, Dave Romney, Ian Harkes, Mark Anthony Kaye, Nick Lima, and Earl Edwards Jr won their first game of the season 4-0

 

What really makes me frustrated is that MLS has buried the controversy and we were left without a coach after he left.
Also, did I really see Ritchie Williams getting off of the team bus yesterday in the pre-game program?

 

Harkes started, MAK came off the bench. Bruce's seems to have finally figured out what Porter never could

There was an article a couple of weeks back about Arena joining the Quakes and of course, he was tight-lipped about what actually happened, but he said he was "very angry" about the whole thing. He described the situation as a bunch of staff in a meeting (I think we can assume that Snitchie was there). And no matter what he said, they blew up a very good team over it, and after a bottom-of-the-barrel season for Revs II, Richie the Rat is still employed with us. Meanwhile, Shalrie Joseph, Dave Van Der Bergh and Bruce Arena are not.

I remember at the time, Steve Nicol said something like, "In the heat of the moment, things get said, people sometimes disagree--which can be a good thing--but if someone takes offence, you just man up and talk it over so you can move on to what's important."

Seriously, teammates, coaches getting into arguments where raised voices and "insensitive" comments happen? The hell you say!

 

Yeah, until I see proof otherwise, Snitchie is a rat to me.

 

I’m not fond of the guy myself, but he worked with Arena for years and years - l kind of doubt he’d blow that up for something trivial. Apparently, Arena told him he wasn’t going to be returning, throwing his boss under the bus could hardly be considered a good career move.

Besides, when the whole thing broke, there was a report that the whole thing started with a bystander who witnessed “inappropriate” conduct. Then lawyers/investigators got involved and … we know what happened after that.

I think it’s probably likely than RW tolerated abuse and ridicule for years for the sake of his career, but when an outsider witnessed it, there were enough other witnesses and incidents that no one could deny what had been going on.

OTOH, since MLS let Arena return, you’d think he could have come back to the Revs - but apparently either Arena or the org weren’t open to that. There are a number of people in Revs management who have benefited from Arena’s departure …

 

Arena said he was "very angry" about it, and I'm sure he holds someone in the Kraft org at least partially responsible. Was it really that out of the question for them to say, "OK, you served your suspension, now come back for the stretch run and win us a cup?"

But if Williams had tolerated and put up with abuse, that's his choice. He's been an assistant with Arena for years, and he surely could have a decent chance for other coaching gigs. Arena even gave him a reference for the Hartford job. No secret that Arena is blunt, arrogant and rude, but usually that behavior falls under the "won't suffer fools" category. I've seen him snap at journos for asking (what he considers) a "stupid" question, but he doesn't seem like someone who'd antagonize someone with unsolicited sh!t-talking.

Somewhere down the line the full story needs to come out. And none of this revisionist history, like Doug Logan saying how much he pushed for supporters culture in MLS, which we know for a fact is simply not true. We were there, remember?

 

Well. if it ever comes out that it wasn't Ritchie, I will be the first to apologize.

 

A former U.S. national soccer team player and a former Major League Soccer All-Star have joined American Soccer Club New York, rounding out a sporting committee with impressive soccer credentials.
Jim Rooney and Perry Van der Beck will join previously announced Bob Montgomery and Mark Lugris on the club’s sporting committee in advance of the inaugural season in the National Professional Soccer League.
Rooney, 56, began his professional soccer career on Long Island in 1994 after being signed to his first contract by current ASC New York managing partner/general manager Jim Kilmeade. A Deer Park native, Rooney played collegiately at LIU Post. He tallied 21 goals in a combined 116 career MLS appearances with the MetroStars, Miami Fusion and New England Revolution from 1998 through 2002 and earned an All-Star Game selection with the Fusion.

 

My favorite Jim Rooney moment was one time when they thought it was a good idea to mike up the players.

There was a bit of argy-bargy over a 50-50 ball, and Rooney was heard saying "C'mon ref, that's a f***ing foul!"
After a long pause, Adrian Healy said, "Apparently referee Raul Dominguez didn't think it was any sort of foul..."

 

But, I think it’s also possible that when Arena saw how much they had f’ed up his team and organization that he decided that it would be crazy to jump back into that mess.
