What "it" are you referring to? The mood of Pakistani politics in the year 2002?

Sorry, clumsy attempt to start discussion.

The "it" is the world-wide conflict with the U.S. that is being carefully tended to by Islamic zealots that desire to revive a theocratic empire. The "those" I'm referring to are people who would like to ascribe this conflict solely or primarily to socio-economic or strictly political causes (usually with the U.S. to blame). There's plenty of blame that the U.S. can accept, but Pakastani politics, as elsewhere, now has a very distinctly religious underpinning.

Well, I actually understood your original point, but just wanted to allow you a chance to clarify it a bit, since it implies, erroneously, I think you'll agree, that "Islam itself" is the SOLE cause of the present worldwide conflict.

In your follow up, you do use the term Islamic zealots, which is of course not the same thing as "Islam" any more than "Christianity" is the same thing as "The White Christian Brotherhood."

Anyway, you seem to want to separate religious passion from socio-economics, when of course religion is a huge part of the "socio" side of that coin. So to anyone who says this war is primarily about socio-economic problems, then religious bigotry and zealotry could sure be included in that umbrella term.

Indeed, religious extremism becomes quite popular when the powers that be are unstable and/or oppressive, the Islamic Revolution in Iran being the most obvious example, imo.
