Re: fans vote on houston team name Houston Houligans -- Now there's an authentic name for a soccer team!
It is classy and really pays homage to the Republic of Texas. It even has a euro sound to it, yet it is an original name. Cudos to the guy who thought of it. Game over.
Re: fans vote on houston team name You tell that son of a bitch no Yankee is ever comin' to Houston! Not as long as you bastards are running things!
According to the blog by "Not Doug Logan": " While there is going to be voting for the name, MLS/AEG has the artwork and logo all ready to go for the new franchise....I have been trying to get a hold of the logo but have not been able to. But I am told by some people involved in the process that the logo is a "shield." Go look at the Real Salt Lake logo if you don't know what a shield logo is." http://www.logansrevenge.blogspot.com/
This is weird. How can you have a logo drawn up, when you havn't voted and decided on a team name and theme yet?? Does that seem odd to anyone else, since the logo/badge/crest somewhat has to represnt the team name.
A lot of the names that have been brainstormed here are better than what the the will probably be called. I like Houston Republic 1836.
You do something having to do more with Houston and soccer generally and add the name when chosen, in the same fashion regardless of name. Additionally it's quite possible four (or so) names to choose from have been picked, styles done for each (or a common style for the names), and colors regardless of name chosen. Maybe they'll even show the badges to choose from along with the names for the contest. Normally this would be a particularly expensive way of doing things, but given the short time frame, they're spending an arm and a leg for quick work anyhow. Additionally, AEG just opened a creative division in LA last fall (who did the forthcoming Bridgeview Bank Stadium logo) so they are able to do this in-house.
I don't know why, but "Club America Houston" sounds really nice to me...I know there are a lot of Mexico haters regarding MLS fans (and no, I'm not Mexican), and it would have really worked out if the actual Club America was involved, though i don't think they would have a licensing issue with the name being used (ie. Real Salt Lake City). You would then also allow fans time to figure out a good mascot name as the team plays. That's really how its done in other parts of the world where soccer rules. As for other potential names, "Houston Republic 1836" isn't bad, but I would hate to have the players referred as "Republicans" .Anything associated with outer space has been overdone already in the town, so they should go a different route. Houston Hotspurs still seems too close to the San Antonio Spurs. I do like the idea of using orange, though, since no team has that color (IT IS IMPORTANT to build identity....something MLS should do more often by banning away whites). Orange is also good because its a light enough color in the summer to not make the players die out on the field, especially in a Houston hot and humid summer. Just please, no more red or blue uniforms....too much of that already in the league!
i like the idea of incorporating the "1836." what about Houston Battalion 1836...that also sounds like a nice supporters group name if it already hasn't been brought up: The 1836 Battalion.
